Some 9- and 10-membered oxa-diaza macrocyclic ligands and their N-acetate derivatives have been synthesized and their protonation patterns studied by 1H NMR and potentiometric techniques. The stability constants of the complexes formed by these ligands with several alkaline-earth and first-series transition metal ions, zinc, cadmium and lead, were determined by potentiometry and the values were compared with those formed with the analogous 9-membered tri-aza macrocyclic ligands and with 12-membered ...

Trinitrotoluene (TNT) and dinitrotoluene (DNT) originating from 50 years of explosives production have heavily contaminated two stacked aquifers in the vicinity of Lisboa, Portugal. To assess if these poly-nitroaromatic compounds (P-NACs) are being degraded in the subsurface, tracer-based groundwater dating techniques combined with compound-specific isotope analyses (CSIA) were applied. The groundwater residence times were distinctly different in the two aerobic aquifers, as determined by the tritium (( ...

A diversity of evolutionary processes can be responsible for generating and maintaining biodiversity. Molecular markers were used to investigate the influence of Plio-Pleistocene climatic oscillations on the evolutionary history of taxa restricted to the freshwaters of a classical glacial refugium. Population genetic, phylogenetic and phylogeographical methods allowed the inference of temporal dynamics of cladogenesis and processes shaping present-day genetic constitution of Barbus sclateri, a polytypic ...

The population genetic structure of the shore crab Pachygrapsus marmoratus was studied along the Portuguese coast based on six variable microsatellite loci. Genetic differentiation among populations according to a geographic gradient was not detected. This lack of genetic structure reflects the continuous distribution of the species along the Portuguese coast and suggests that gene flow occurs within the studied distribution range. Gene flow is probably maintained by the planktonic larvae of P. ...

Abstract The effect of the degree of acetylation (DA) of 3D chitosan (Ch) scaffolds on the inflammatory reaction was investigated. Chitosan porous scaffolds with DAs of 4 and 15% were implanted using a subcutaneous air‐pouch model of inflammation. The initial acute inflammatory response was evaluated 24 and 48 h after implantation. To characterize the initial response, the recruitment and adhesion of inflammatory cells to the implant site was studied. The fibrous capsule formation and the infiltration ...

Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) are most prevalent in developing countries. In Mozambique, the first and only national survey of the distribution and prevalence of schistosomiasis and STHs was conducted in 1952 and 1957. Only occasional surveys in restricted areas have been conducted since the 1950s. The objective of our survey was to update information on the geographic distribution and prevalence of schistosomiasis and STHs in this country. During August 2005–June 2007, the ...

A genetic survey of 18 presumptive enzyme loci was conducted on members of the diploid-triploid R. alburnoides complex in order to test the hypothesis of hybrid origin. Most specimens examined were heterozygous at a high proportion of loci, with seven loci showing virtually fixed heterozygosity in some or all populations. This observation strongly supports the hypothesized hybrid ancestry. Involvement in the origin of the R. alburnoides complex was examined by comparison of allels with those observed ...

The aim of this text is to review the research undertaken in Portugal on the question of the medieval royal chancellery and diplomacy and their relationship with the study of royal bureaucracy. In this sense, we characterize the lines of development that are to be noted in the research undertaken into political societies and royal power based on the records of the royal chancellery in the last thirty years. Initially, we focus our attention on the relationship established between the royal chancellery ...

The adhesion of human leukocytes to nanostructured surfaces with different chemical properties and the effect of protein adsorption were investigated. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) prepared with mixtures of methyl- and hydroxyl-terminated alkanethiols in different percentages on gold were used. The surfaces were pre-immersed in distinct protein solutions (human serum albumin, human fibrinogen, and autologous plasma). Adherent leukocytes were analyzed both by light and SEM. SAMs submitted to pre- ...

Using data on a series of polyaza and polyoxa-polyaza macrocyclic compounds, a satisfactory linear correlation was established between the dissociation constants of their acid forms obtained in deuterium oxide (pKD) and in water (pKH). The isotopic effect, ΔpK=pKD - pKH, increases with increasing pK, being larger for the weaker acids. The pKD vs. pKH correlation may be used to determine pKD or pKH values when one of the constants is known; the statistical errors of the estimates are not significatively ...

A wild-type p53 gene under control of the metallothionein MT-1 promoter was stably transfected into human colon tumor-derived cell line EB. Repeated inductions of the metallothionein wild-type p53 gene with zinc chloride results in progressive detachment of wild-type p53 cells grown on culture dishes. Examination at both the light and electron microscopic level revealed that cells expressing wild-type p53 developed morphological features of apoptosis. DNA from both attached and detached cells was ...

Squalius alburnoides is a complex of minnows common to the Iberian Peninsula, consisting of two distinct forms. The most common form is comprised of diploid and polyploid asexual hybrids heterozygous for several diagnostic allozyme loci contributed by Squalius pyrenaicus or Squalius carolitertii and a missing ancestor. The other form is diploid and homozygous for the allele contributed by the missing ancestor at these same loci. Present results from analyses of sex ratio and cytochrome b sequences ...

Developmental and individual differences in the tendency to favor analytic responses over heuristic responses were examined in children of two different ages (10- and 11-year-olds versus 13-year-olds), and of widely varying cognitive ability. Three tasks were examined that all required analytic processing to override heuristic processing: inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning under conditions of belief bias, and probabilistic reasoning. Significant increases in analytic responding with development ...

The after catch quality decrease of squid, Loligo plei, was evaluated, comparing two storage treatments: contact and non-contact with ice. The squids were evaluated for their sensory, instrumental colour and psychrotrophic bacterial count changes. A principal component analysis of the sensory data indicated that the squid quality markedly decreased after 7 days of storage, in both treatments. The instrumental colour analysis showed that the red and yellow colours of the squid skin increased with ...

Products of 24 presumptive enzyme loci were used to analyse the consequences on genetic structure and variation of the Chondrostoma lusitanicum population decline within the Tejo basin. This rare cyprinid is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula and has a very restricted distribution. Five samples from the Tejo catchment were compared with a sample from a small basin, the Samarra, that has not suffered obvious anthropogenic pressures and where the fish is still abundant. Heterozygosity and polymorphism ...

Cardiovascular disease is one of the major causes of mortality in Canadian women. However, the number of women recruited into cardiovascular clinical trials continues to be low relative to the prevalence of cardiovascular disease. To determine why the recruitment of women into cardiovascular trials continues to be problematic, we prospectively examined the barriers and motivations of women contacted for the Raloxifene Use for The Heart (RUTH) study. Two hundred seventy postmenopausal women were surveyed. ...
