While the physical dimensions of climate change are now routinely assessed through multimodel intercomparisons, projected impacts on the global ocean ecosystem generally rely on individual models with a specific set of assumptions. To address these single-model limitations, we present standardized ensemble projections from six global marine ecosystem models forced with two Earth system models and four emission scenarios with and without fishing. We derive average biomass trends and associated uncertainties ...

Background: It is not known whether amino acid supplementations may influence health status in hospitalized older acutely ill patients. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine whether nutritional supplementation with amino acids (Aminoglutam ® ) is associated with multidimensional improvement assessed with the Multidimensional Prognostic Index (MPI). Methods: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot clinical trial, 126 patients aged ≥65 years were enrolled from 6 Italian geriatric ...

Abstract Background Cardiomyocyte apoptosis as well as proliferation have been described in congestive heart failure, but their clinical relevance remains unclear. In order to clarify whether apoptosis and cell proliferation occur in patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy and whether their degree in left ventricle fragments resected during partial left ventriculectomy has any influence on the outcome after this surgery, we compared their occurrence in four groups of patients: group A, short‐ ...

In Europe, the use of electric bicycles is rapidly increasing. This trend raises important safety concerns: Is their use compatible with existing infrastructure and regulations? Do they present novel safety issues? How do they impact other traffic? This study sought to address these concerns, using instrumented electric bicycles to monitor e-cyclists' behavior in a naturalistic fashion. Data was collected from 12 bicyclists, each of whom rode an instrumented bicycle for two weeks. In total, 1500 ...

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most prevalent cancer worldwide, increasing the cost of healthcare services and with a high rate of morbidity. Its etiology is linked to chronic ultraviolet (UV) exposure that leads to malignant transformation of keratinocytes. Invasive growth and metastasis are severe consequences of this process. Therapy-resistant and highly aggressive SCC is frequently fatal, exemplifying the need for novel treatment strategies. Cold physical plasma is a partially ...

Cancer metastases arise from a multi-step process that requires metastasizing tumor cells to adapt to signaling input from varying tissue environments [1]. As an early metastatic event, cancer cell dissemination occurs through different migration programs, including multicellular, collective, and single-cell mesenchymal or amoeboid migration [2-4]. Migration modes can interconvert based on changes in cell adhesion, cytoskeletal mechanotransduction [5], and/or proteolysis [6], most likely under the control ...

Abstract The growing prevalence of opioid use disorder (OUD) constitutes an urgent health crisis. Ample evidence indicates that risk for OUD is heritable. As a surrogate (or proxy) for OUD, we explored the genetic basis of using prescription opioids ‘not as prescribed’. We hypothesized that misuse of opiates might be a heritable risk factor for OUD. To test this hypothesis, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of problematic opioid use (POU) in 23andMe research participants of European ...

Several regulators of endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-associated degradation (ERAD) have a shorter half-life compared to conventional ER chaperones. At steady state, they are selectively removed from the ER by poorly defined events collectively referred to as ERAD tuning. myo-inositol phosphates are an important group of biomolecules that are present in the eukaryotic cells. The most abundant member of this family in nature is InsP6, usually called phytate. The importance of the interaction of InsP6 with cations has been recognized during the last years, and any attempt to know the function of this molecule in eukaryotic cells must include the fact that phytate will be strongly associated with simple inorganic and organic ammonium cations in solution. We report the results of de-Haas-van-Alphen (dHvA) measurements in ${\text{CeCoIn}}_{5}$ and ${\text{LaCoIn}}_{5}$. Cd doping is known to induce an antiferromagnetic order in the heavy-fermion superconductor ${\text{CeCoIn}}_{5}$, whose effect can be reversed with applied pressure. We find a slight but systematic change of the dHvA frequencies with Cd doping in both compounds, reflecting the chemical potential shift due to the addition of holes. This Repetition Effect has been used to study word encoding and memory processes in a variety of experimental measures. Using linear mixed models to analyze the evolution of fixations over successive repetitions, we observed an interaction between corpus word frequency and repetition. Specifically, ...

The cytokines controlling the development of human interleukin (IL) 17–producing T helper cells in vitro have been difficult to identify. We addressed the question of the development of human IL-17–producing T helper cells in vivo by quantifying the production and secretion of IL-17 by fresh T cells ex vivo, and by T cell blasts expanded in vitro from patients with particular genetic traits affecting transforming growth factor (TGF) β, IL-1, IL-6, or IL-23 responses. Activating mutations in TGFB1, ...

Abstract Emerging fishing activity due to melting ice and poleward species distribution shifts in the rapidly‐warming Arctic Ocean challenges transboundary management and requires proactive governance. A 2021 moratorium on commercial fishing in the Arctic high seas provides a 16‐year runway for improved scientific understanding. Given substantial knowledge gaps, characterizing areas of highest uncertainty is a key first step. Marine ecosystem model ensembles that project future fish distributions ...
