Prior observational studies have suggested that medications targeting the renin-angiotensin system, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-Is) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), may be associated with decreased PTSD symptoms. Given known sex differences in PTSD prevalence and cardiovascular disease, here we tested whether the effects of ACE-I/ARB status on PTSD differ by sex. We also expanded these observations with replication analyses in a large biorepository database. Participants ...

Abstract. A continuous 305-year (1711–2016) monthly rainfall series (IoI_1711) is created for the Island of Ireland. The post 1850 series draws on an existing quality assured rainfall network for Ireland, while pre-1850 values come from instrumental and documentary series compiled, but not published by the UK Met Office. The series is evaluated by comparison with independent long-term observations and reconstructions of precipitation, temperature and circulation indices from across the British–Irish ...

Background Little is known about how to discourage clinicians from ordering low-value services. Our objective was to test whether clinicians committing their future selves (ie, precommitting) to follow Choosing Wisely recommendations with decision supports could decrease potentially low-value orders. Methods We conducted a 12-month stepped wedge cluster randomised trial among 45 primary care physicians and advanced practice providers in six adult primary care clinics of a US community group practice. ...

The presence of cirrhosis increases the potential risk of hemorrhage for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We evaluated the relative risk for hemorrhage in patients with HCC treated with antiangiogenic agents. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of antiangiogenic studies in HCC from 1995 to 2011. For nonrandomized studies we compared bleeding risk with other HCC single-arm studies that did not include an antiangiogenic agent. To separate disease-specific factors we also ...

Timothy Spector, Mario Falchi and colleagues report a genome-wide association study for development of cutaneous nevi, the strongest known risk factor for cutaneous melanoma. They report two loci associated with nevus count, and show these loci are also associated with susceptibility to melanoma. A high melanocytic nevi count is the strongest known risk factor for cutaneous melanoma. The kinetics of the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction over two iron–chromium based commercial catalysts has been studied. The experiments were performed in a differential reactor at a constant temperature of 450 °C and a space velocity of 1.9 m3 gcat−1 h−1 at approximately atmospheric pressure. The effects of CO, CO2, H2O and H2 concentration on WGS reaction rate were determined over both catalysts using selected gas compositions that might be encountered in coal based gasification system of the dry- ...

This study investigates how calling influences burnout and what the roles of social worth and career stage are in this relation. Drawing from the Conservation of Resources Theory, we expect that calling may be negatively associated with burnout through increased social worth and that career stage moderates these relationships. Children are entitled to receive antibiotic therapy that is based on evidence and best practice, but might be overlooked in hospital programmes designed to achieve antimicrobial stewardship [AMS]. This failure to include children could be because children make up small proportion of patients in most hospitals, and are cared for by specialised paediatric staff. We reviewed the evidence and consulted experts in three global regions to develop ten recommendations for good-practice in hospital AMS programmes ...

Abstract This article reports results of a study of 563 practicing Minnesota and Wisconsin dental hygienists' knowledge, opinions, and use of pit and fissure sealants. The study was carried out six months prior to the 1983 NIH Consensus Development Conference on Dental Sealants in the Prevention of Tooth Decay. It therefore provides baseline information for two states prior to the initiation of widespread public information about the positive value of sealants that occurred as a result of that conference. ...

Women suffer from depression at twice the rate of men, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we identify marked baseline sex differences in the expression of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), a class of regulatory transcripts, in human postmortem brain tissue that are profoundly lost in depression. One such human lncRNA, RP11-298D21.1 (which we termed FEDORA), is enriched in oligodendrocytes and neurons and up-regulated in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of depressed females ...

Background Major depressive disorder is a pervasive and debilitating syndrome characterized by mood disturbances, anhedonia, and alterations in cognition. While the prevalence of major depressive disorder is twice as high for women as men, little is known about the molecular mechanisms that drive sex differences in depression susceptibility. Methods We discovered that SLIT1, a secreted protein essential for axonal navigation and molecular guidance during development, is downregulated in the adult ...

Depression is a common disorder that affects women at twice the rate of men. Here, we report that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), a recently discovered class of regulatory transcripts, represent about one-third of the differentially expressed genes in the brains of depressed humans and display complex region- and sex-specific patterns of regulation. We identified the primate-specific, neuronal-enriched gene LINC00473 as downregulated in prefrontal cortex (PFC) of depressed females but not males. Using ...
