In situ synchrotron X-ray scattering was used to reveal the transient microstructure of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA)/tungsten disulfide inorganic nanotubes (WS2NTs) nanocomposites. This microstructure is formed during the blow molding process (“tube expansion”) of an extruded polymer tube, an important step in the manufacturing of PLLA-based bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS). A fundamental understanding of how such a microstructure develops during processing is relevant to two unmet needs in PLLA-based ...

An increase in the ageing UK population is leading to new ways of looking at how we deliver health and social care services in the UK. The use of assisted living technology (ALT) and telecare is already playing a part in these new models of care. Yet despite the current advances in the range of technology and networking capabilities in the home, ALT and telecare solutions have not been taken up as eagerly as might have been anticipated. The study reported here used scenario‐based focus groups with ...

Genetic testing for pathogenic COL4A3–5 variants is usually undertaken to investigate the cause of persistent hematuria, especially with a family history of hematuria or kidney function impairment. Alport syndrome experts now advocate genetic testing for persistent hematuria, even when a heterozygous pathogenic COL4A3 or COL4A4 is suspected, and cascade testing of their first-degree family members because of their risk of impaired kidney function. The experts recommend too that COL4A3 or COL4A4 ...

The glomerular podocyte is a highly specialized cell, with the ability to ultrafilter blood and support glomerular capillary pressures. However, little is known about either the genetic programs leading to this functionality or the final phenotype. We approached this question utilizing a human conditionally immortalized cell line, which differentiates from a proliferating epithelial phenotype to a differentiated form. We profiled gene expression during several time points during differentiation ...

The core oscillator of the circadian clock in cyanobacteria consists of 3 proteins, KaiA, KaiB, and KaiC. All 3 have previously been shown to be essential for clock function. Accordingly, most cyanobacteria possess at least 1 copy of each kai gene. One exception is the marine genus Prochlorococcus, which we suggest here has suffered a stepwise deletion of the kaiA gene, together with significant genome streamlining. Nevertheless, natural Prochlorococcus populations and laboratory cultures are strongly ...

Familial hematuria is a clinical sign of a genetically heterogeneous group of conditions, accompanied by broad inter- and intrafamilial variable expressivity. The most frequent condition is caused by pathogenic (or likely pathogenic) variants in the collagen-IV genes, COL4A3/A4/A5. Pathogenic variants in COL4A5 are responsible for the severe X-linked glomerulopathy, Alport syndrome (AS), while homozygous or compound heterozygous variants in the COL4A3 or the COL4A4 gene cause autosomal recessive AS. ...
