Julia Michaels, Evan Batzer, Susan Harrison, Valerie T. Eviner,

Disturbance often increases local-scale (α) diversity by suppressing dominant competitors. However, widespread disturbances may also reduce biotic heterogeneity (β diversity) by making the identities and abundances of species more similar among patches. Landscape-scale (γ) diversity may also decline if disturbance-sensitive species are lost. California's vernal pool plant communities are species rich, in part because of two scales of β diversity: (1) within pools, as species composition changes with ...

Equine malignant melanoma (EMM) is a frequently occurring dermoepidermal tumor in grey horses. Currently available therapies are either challenging or inefficient. Betulinic acid (BA), a naturally occurring triterpenoid, is a promising compound for cancer treatment. To evaluate the potential of BA as a topical therapy for EMM, its anticancer effects on primary equine melanoma cells and dermal fibroblasts and its percutaneous permeation through isolated equine skin were assessed in vitro.BA showed ...

Research shows that holistic admissions review practices can increase diversity across students without decreasing the workforce preparedness and academic success of students. Therefore, many disciplines have readily adopted the widespread use of holistic admissions review. Despite its proven effectiveness in addressing student diversity, nursing has been slow to implement holistic admissions review. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the barriers to implementing holistic ...

The safety of glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa inhibitors has been well documented in clinical trials. Although these trials have included a broad patient population, the strict enrollment criteria may have resulted in exclusion of patients at a higher risk of bleeding complications. The authors conducted a retrospective chart review of 1020 consecutive patients who received GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors and underwent percutaneous coronary intervention in a large community hospital. Urbanization and anthropogenic development have fundamentally altered ecosystem dynamics on a global scale. Conservation and management of comparatively less modified landscapes adjacent to highly modified landscapes requires careful consideration of interactions between landscape types. Restoration or conservation of habitat within a developed matrix is generally thought to have beneficial effects on landscape-level ecological processes. We propose an ecological spillover framework to critically ...

For assessing antibiotic effects, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) neglects that most antibiotics display different rates of bacterial killing. Time-kill curves, on the other hand, provide details on these killing rates but their interpretation is more complex and hardly standardised. The aim of the present study was to develop an analysis method to easily compare the pharmacodynamics of linezolid (LZD) against Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecium via in vitro time-kill curve experiments ...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. In particular, neuroinflammation, mediated by microglia cells but also through CD8+ T-cells, actively contributes to disease pathology. Leukotrienes are involved in neuroinflammation and in the pathological hallmarks of AD. In consequence, leukotriene signaling-more specifically, the leukotriene receptors-has been recognized as a potential drug target to ameliorate AD pathology. Here, we analyzed the effects of the leukotriene receptor ...
