Because public health challenges are changing rapidly, over the past 3 years, we have turned a critical eye to the master of public health program at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Under a process dubbed "curriculum renewal," we engaged more than 170 faculty, staff, and students (and hundreds of alumni and employers of our graduates) in an initiative to develop a completely new design for master of public health education that launched in fall 2012. We have described its ...

The present study compared families of patients with anorexia nervosa with families of non-anorexic adolescent daughters of a similar social class. All anorexics and adolescent comparison girls and their parents were studied using a variety of psychometric measures. Body size estimation and physical anhedonia were also measured. Family characteristics were assessed using the Family Assessment Measure (FAM). Contrary to the hypotheses, no abnormalities were found in terms of parental attitudes to ...

Heparin is the anticoagulant used during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Both the use of heparin and the reversal of its effect with protamine have well-documented complications. Ancrod is a defibrinogenating enzyme that has been used as an anticoagulant in humans, but its use as an anticoagulant for CPB has been limited to studies in animals. Twenty patients for elective aortocoronary bypass surgery were anticoagulated by means of an intravenous infusion of ancrod pre-operatively. Target plasma fibrinogen ...

Gamification has been extensively implemented and studied in corporate settings and has proven to be more effective than traditional employee-training programs, however, few classroom studies of gamification have been reported in the literature. Our study explored the potential of gamified on-line undergraduate physics content as a mechanism to enhance student learning and motivation. Specifically, the main objective of this work was to determine whether extrinsic motivation indicators commonly ...

Time preferences drive decisions in many economic contexts. For understanding the underlying decision process, it is key to identify what affects these preferences in different situations. To shed light on how people make intertemporal allocation choices, we analyze the stability of time preferences under time pressure. Conducting a laboratory study with 144 subjects using convex time budgets, we elicit time preferences with and without time pressure in a within-subject design. We find preferences ...

Being able to replicate scientific findings is crucial for scientific progress1–15. We replicate 21 systematically selected experimental studies in the social sciences published in Nature and Science between 2010 and 201516–36. The replications follow analysis plans reviewed by the original authors and pre-registered prior to the replications. The replications are high powered, with sample sizes on average about five times higher than in the original studies. We find a significant effect in the ...

Stimulation of the ERK/MAPK pathway is required for the exit from pluripotency and onset of differentiation in mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs). The dynamic behaviour of ERK activity in individual cells during this transition is unclear. Using a FRET-based biosensor, we monitored ERK signalling dynamics of single mouse ESCs during differentiation. ERK activity was highly heterogeneous, with considerable variability in ERK signalling between single cells within ESC colonies. Different triggers of ...

Abstract The efficiency of financial markets and their potential to produce bubbles are central topics in academic and professional debates. Yet, little is known about the contribution of financial professionals to price efficiency. We run 116 experimental markets with 412 professionals and 502 students. We find that professional markets with bubble drivers – capital inflows or high initial capital supply – are susceptible to bubbles, although they are more efficient than student markets. In mixed markets ...

The first evidence for the Higgs boson decay to a Z boson and a photon is presented, with a statistical significance of 3.4 standard deviations. The result is derived from a combined analysis of the searches performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations with proton-proton collision datasets collected at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) from 2015 to 2018. These correspond to integrated luminosities of around 140 fb − 1 for each experiment, at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The measured signal ...
