Studyobjectives Daytime sleep has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and heart failure (HF), but the mechanisms remain unclear. We have investigated the association between daytime and night-time sleep patterns and cardiovascular risk markers in older adults including cardiac markers and subclinical markers of atherosclerosis (arterial stiffness and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT)). Methods Cross-sectional study of 1722 surviving men aged 71–92 examined in 2010–2012 ...

Background. Cellular insulin resistance is the hallmark of type 2 diabetes and predominantly affects adipose and muscle cells. The saturated free fatty acid palmitate is elevated in insulin-resistant states and may directly contribute to cellular insulin resistance. A spectrum of renal disease is associated with increased markers of insulin resistance, although direct causal mechanisms are not known. In the kidney, glomerular podocytes are novel insulin-sensitive cells that have the ability to rapidly ...

The catalysts used, derived from the precatalysts [(xylylPhanePhos)RuCl2(DPEN)] (S)-(R,R)-1 and (R)-(S,S)-1, were shown to possess very high reactivity. 4'-Fluoroacetophenone was hydrogenated at a molar substrate-to-catalyst ratio (S/C) of 100,000 with complete conversion effected in as little as 80 min (average turnover ∼1200 min-1, peak turnover ∼2500 min-1). The catalysts are tolerant of a range of commercial ...

The relevance to coronary heart disease (CHD) of cytokines that govern inflammatory cascades, such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), may be underestimated because such mediators are short acting and prone to fluctuations. We evaluated associations of long-term circulating IL-6 levels with CHD risk (defined as nonfatal myocardial infarction [MI] or fatal CHD) in two population-based cohorts, involving serial measurements to enable correction for within-person variability. We updated a systematic review to put ...

The single enantiomer title alcohols, useful as ω-side chain precursors for pharmaceutically important prostaglandin analogues were synthesised from the corresponding racemic alcohols by a convenient 4-step sequence. After enzymatic acylation of the alcohol with a vinyl carboxylate, the residual (S)-alcohol in the mixture was converted to the mesylate. Subsequent displacement with the corresponding carboxylate anion, followed by enzymatic deacylation gave the desired (R)-alcohol. In this way, all ...

BackgroundAssociations between bouts of physical activity (PA), sedentary behaviour (SB) and cardiovascular disease, and their mutual independence are not well defined. A low ankle brachial index (ABI ≤0.9) indicates peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and is predictive of cardiovascular events and functional impairment. We investigated the independence of PA and SB and the importance of bout duration in relation to ABI using objective measures.Methods945 men from the British Regional Heart Study, mean ...

Low physical activity (PA) and high levels of sedentary time (ST) are associated with higher cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among older people. However, their independent contribution and importance of duration of PA and ST bouts remain unclear. We investigated associations between objectively measured PA, ST and non-invasive vascular measures, markers of CVD risk. Cross-sectional study of 1216 men from the British Regional Heart Study, mean age 78.5years, measured in 2010-2012. Carotid intima thickness ( ...

Objective Vascular disease is highly prevalent in the elderly. This study aimed to evaluate arterial phenotype in elderly men and compare carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) assessed by two techniques (Sphygmocor (S)and Vicorder (V)). Methods 1722 men (72–92 years), participants in the British Regional Heart Study, underwent ultrasound assessment of carotid intima–media thickness (cIMT), carotid distensibility coefficient and presence of carotid plaque. cfPWV and ankle brachial pressure index ( ...

The immune synapse (IS) forms as dendritic cells (DCs) and T cells interact in lymph nodes during initiation of adaptive immunity. Factors that contribute to the formation and maintenance of IS stability and function have been mostly studied in T cells, whereas little is known about events occurring during synapse formation in DCs. Here, we show that DCs activated by Toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists reorient the microtubule-organizing center (MTOC) toward the interacting T cell during antigen-specific ...

A better description of the extent and structure of genetic diversity in dengue virus (DENV) in endemic settings is central to its eventual control. To this end we determined the complete coding region sequence of 187 DENV-2 genomes and 68 E genes from viruses sampled from Vietnamese patients between 1995 and 2009. Strikingly, an episode of genotype replacement was observed, with Asian 1 lineage viruses entirely displacing the previously dominant Asian/American lineage viruses. This genotype replacement ...
