Our aim is to assess the validity of this grading scale. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all suspected brain arteriovenous ...

Abstract Angiogenesis is essential for normal growth and function of the corpus luteum. The roles of various angiogenic factors in these events are being elucidated. Endocrine gland vascular endothelial growth factor (EG-VEGF) has recently been described in the human ovary. To define the localization of EG-VEGF mRNA in the corpus luteum and determine changes in its expression, dated human corpora lutea were studied at the early, mid-, and late luteal phases. Quantitative RT-PCR was employed to determine ...

Abstract Context: The molecular mechanisms of luteolysis and its inhibition during maternal recognition of pregnancy remain unclear. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the differential regulation of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) expression in human corpora lutea using in vivo and in vitro models. Design: Corpora lutea from different stages of the luteal phase and after luteal rescue with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) were studied. Primary cultures and cocultures ...

Abstract There is a need to identify potential biological control agents for use against lepidopterous pests in greenhouses. The solitary endoparasitoid Meteorus gyrator (Thunberg) attacks a range of macrolepidopterous larvae, including those of some important horticultural pest species. Laboratory trials designed to investigate the biology of M. gyrator on larvae of the tomato moth, Lacanobia oleracea Linnaeus, reveal that this parasitoid is capable of parasitizing all larval stages of its host, ...

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) causes several neurological diseases in the late stages of AIDS, but their ante-mortem diagnosis is problematic.Clinical criteria (defining a presumptive diagnosis) and polymerase chain reaction $4 (PCR) assay from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were blindly used to predict the involvement of CMV in neurological disorders of 164 consecutive AIDS patients undergoing a lumbar puncture.During the follow-up, a definite diagnosis based on viral culture of CSF, clinical outcome and/or CNS ...

The excretion rates of oestriol and creatinine in pregnancy were found to bear a constant relationship throughout a 24-h period. Oestriol levels, expressed in mg per g of creatinine, gave a good indication of impending foetal death and it was established that these values could be satisfactorily obtained from random urine samples. Normal values for oestriol excretion in mg per g of creatinine were determined using random urine samples from healthy pregnant patients.

Abstract. Attack by the ectoparasitoid Eulophus pennicornis Nees (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) prevents larvae of Lacanobia oleracea L. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) from moulting. Prothoracic glands (PGs) excised from parasitized or artificially envenomated hosts show a reduced basal level of ecdysteroid release at a time when non‐parasitized caterpillars produce an ecdysteroid surge (48 h post moult to 5th stadium = penultimate stadium in non‐venomated hosts). By contrast, PGs from similarly parasitized or envenomated ...
