Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI) are a societal burden and considered potentially preventable. Data on risk factors and HAPI burden are important for effective prevention initiatives. This study of the 2009-2014 US Premier Healthcare Database identified HAPI risk factors and compared outcomes after matching HAPI to non-HAPI patients. The cumulative incidence of HAPI was 0.28% (47 365 HAPI among 16 967 687 total adult inpatients). Among the matched sample of 110 808 patients (27 702 HAPI), ...

Leptospirosis is an important occupational disease in New Zealand. The objectives of this study were to determine risk factors for sero-prevalence of leptospiral antibodies in abattoir workers. Sera were collected from 567 abattoir workers and tested by microscopic agglutination for Leptospira interrogans sv. Pomona and Leptospira borgpetersenii sv. Hardjobovis. Association between prevalence and risk factors were determined by species specific multivariable analysis. Eleven percent of workers had ...

Abstract Pressure injuries are one of the most common and costly complications occurring in US hospitals. With up to 3 million patients affected each year, hospital‐acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) place a substantial burden on the US healthcare system. In the current study, US hospital discharge records from 9.6 million patients during the period from October 2009 through September 2014 were analysed to determine the incremental cost of hospital‐acquired pressure injuries by stage. Of the 46 108 ...

Abstract Introduction A younger age at menarche and an older age at menopause are well established risk factors for breast cancer. Recent genome-wide association studies have identified several novel genetic loci associated with these two traits. However, the association between these loci and breast cancer risk is unknown. Methods In this study, we investigated 19 and 17 newly identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from the ReproGen Consortium that have been associated with age at menarche ...

Abstract Despite recent advances in immunotherapies targeting single tumor-associated antigens, patients with multiple myeloma eventually relapse. ISB 2001 is a CD3 + T cell engager (TCE) co-targeting BCMA and CD38 designed to improve cytotoxicity against multiple myeloma. Targeting of two tumor-associated antigens by a single TCE resulted in superior cytotoxic potency across a variable range of BCMA and CD38 tumor expression profiles mimicking natural tumor heterogeneity, improved resistance to competing ...

Summary Ribosome assembly in Escherichia coli involves 54 ribosomal proteins and three RNAs. Whereas functional subunits can be reconstituted in vitro from the isolated components, this process requires long incubation times and high temperatures compared with the in vivo situation, suggesting that non‐ribosomal factors facilitate assembly in vivo . Here, we show that SrmB, a putative DEAD‐box RNA helicase, is involved in ribosome assembly. The deletion of the srmB gene causes a slow‐growth phenotype ...

Ovarian cancer risk in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers has been shown to decrease with longer duration of oral contraceptive use. Although the effects of using oral contraceptives in the general population are well established (approximately 50% risk reduction in ovarian cancer), the estimated risk reduction in mutation carriers is much less precise because of potential bias and small sample sizes. In addition, only a few studies on oral contraceptive use have examined the associations of duration ...

Abstract Background Preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM) before 34 weeks of gestation complicates 1% of pregnancies and accounts for one-third of preterm births. International guidelines recommend expectant management, along with antenatal steroids before 34 weeks and antibiotics. Up-to-date evidence about the risks and benefits of administering tocolysis after PPROM, however, is lacking. In theory, reducing uterine contractility could delay delivery and reduce the risks of prematurity and ...

The data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled "Comparison between Generalized Linear Modelling and Additive Bayesian Network; Identification of Factors associated with the Incidence of Antibodies against Leptospira interrogans sv Pomona in Meat Workers in New Zealand" (Pittavino et al., 2017) [5]. A prospective cohort study was conducted in four sheep slaughtering abattoirs in New Zealand (NZ) (Dreyfus et al., 2015) [1]. Sera were collected twice a year from 384 meat ...

In recent years, multiple myeloma (MM) patients have benefited from new treatments targeting MM associated antigens such as CD38 and BCMA. However, despite exceptional overall response rates observed using CAR T cell therapies or bispecific antibodies, durable responses beyond 2 years are still limited (PFS below 40% for treatment with idecabtagene vicleucel1 or teclistamab2). It has been proposed that one of the potential reasons for patient relapse may be downregulation of the target or expansion ...

After failure of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), lenalidomide (LEN) yields red blood cell (RBC) transfusion independence (TI) in 20–30% of lower-risk non-del5q myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Several observations suggest an additive effect of ESA and LEN in this situation. We performed a randomized phase III study in 131 RBC transfusion-dependent (TD, median transfusion requirement six RBC units per 8 weeks) lower-risk ESA-refractory non-del5q MDS. Patients received LEN alone, 10 mg per day, ...

Clinical features of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) could be influenced by many factors, such as disease intrinsic factors (e.g., morphologic, cytogenetic, molecular), extrinsic factors (e.g, management, environment), and ethnicity. Several previous studies have suggested such differences between Asian and European/USA countries. In this study, to elucidate potential differences in primary untreated MDS between Japanese (JPN) and Caucasians (CAUC), we analyzed the data from a large international database ...

Key Points Hazards regarding mortality and leukemic transformation in MDS diminish over time in higher-risk but remain stable in lower-risk patients. This change of hazard indicates time-dependent attenuation of power of basal risk scores, which is relevant for clinical decision making.

Less than 20 % of familial breast cancer patients who undergo genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 carry a pathogenic mutation in one of these two genes. The GENESIS (GENE SISter) study was designed to identify new breast cancer susceptibility genes in women attending cancer genetics clinics and with no BRCA1/2 mutation. The study involved the French national network of family cancer clinics. It was based on enrichment in genetic factors of the recruited population through case selection relying on ...

e16073 Background: North America has one of the highest rates of RCC, and in 2018, 65,340 new cases were diagnosed in the US alone. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors have been a mainstay treatment for RCC. However, the first CPI, nivolumab, was approved by the FDA as a second-line treatment for RCC in late 2015 and as a first-line therapy in combination with ipilimumab in 2018. In this study, real-world outcomes in patients with RCC receiving CPIs were examined. Methods: An observational study was conducted ...
