1. The identity of the organism previously known as Vibrio O1 (N.C.I.B. 8250) with a species of Moraxella is established. 2. The ability of cells to oxidize propionate is present only in cells with an endogenous respiration and this ability is increased 80-fold when the organism is grown with propionate. 3. Isocitrate lyase activity in extracts from propionate-grown cells is the same as that in extracts from lactate-grown cells, about tenfold greater than that in extracts from succinate-grown cells ...

Background: Dietary flavonoids may improve endothelial function and ultimately lead to beneficial cardiovascular effects. Objective: The objective was to assess whether pure dietary flavonoids can modulate nitric oxide and endothelin-1 production and thereby improve endothelial function. Design: A randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover trial in 12 healthy men was conducted to compare the acute effects of the oral administration of 200 mg quercetin, (−)-epicatechin, or epigallocatechin gallate on ...

Lipoprotein oxidation is a process thought to be involved in atherogenesis. Dietary antioxidants that prevent or inhibit oxidative damage to lipoproteins may help to prevent atherosclerosis. Both black and green teas can be major dietary sources of flavonoids and other phenolics with antioxidant activity. Results of previous studies suggest that green tea may have a greater antioxidant potential than black tea. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the effects of black and green tea on ...

Dietary nitrate is increasingly linked to a variety of beneficial health outcomes. Our purpose was to estimate dietary nitrate consumption and identify key dietary changes which have occurred over time within a representative sample of Australian women. Women from the 1946⁻1951 cohort of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health with complete food frequency questionnaire data for both 2001 and 2013 were included for analysis. Dietary nitrate intakes were calculated using key published ...

Boc(S)Phe(S)PheNH2 (1c) was identified from the biological screening of an in-house dipeptide chemical library as a micromolar NK3 receptor selective ligand (IC50=1150nM). This lead structure has subsequently been developed into a series of potent and selective NK3 receptor antagonists an example of which is the urea derivative Boc(S)Phe(R)αMePheNH(CH2)7NHCOHNH2 (11d, PD157672) (IC50=16nM).

The rational discovery of a high affinity NK2 receptor antagonist is described utilizing a general strategy for peptoid design. The contribution to NK2 receptor binding affinity for each amino acid of the hexapeptide 'minimum fragment': Leu-Met-Gln-Trp-Phe-GlyNH2 (8c), was examined by preparing derivatives where each amino acid in turn was replaced with Ala in an 'alanine scan'. The results from this study indicated the primary importance of the Trp and Phe side-chain for binding and led to the observation ...

The use of a dipeptide library as the source of a micromolar chemical lead compound for the human tachykinin NK3 receptor is described. The screening of a dipeptide library through a cloned human NK3 receptor binding assay resulted in the identification of Boc(S)Phe(S)PheNH2 (1), which has subsequently been developed, following a 'peptoid' design strategy, into a series of high-affinity NK3 receptor selective antagonists. The structure-activity relationship of the C-terminal portion of this dipeptide ...

In this paper we describe the transformation of a series of modified dipeptide NK3 receptor selective ligands, previously developed from a hit identified from the screening of a dipeptide chemical library, into non-peptide, nanomolar affinity NK3 receptor selective antagonists eg. PD160946 and PD161182. PD 161182 blocks senktide-induced human NK3 receptor mediated increases in intracellular calcium levels with a Ke of 0.88nM.
