The scalable and environmentally-friendly synthesis of mixed Fe(III)/M(II) (M = Ni, Co, Mg) polycarboxylate porous MOFs based on the Secondary Building Unit approach is reported. A combination of in situ infrared spectroscopy, (57)Fe Mössbauer spectrometry and adsorption microcalorimetry confirms the direct accessibility of the iron(III) and metal(II) sites under low temperature activation conditions.

A thermodynamic study of the structural large-pore (LP) to narrow pore (NP) transition in various Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) is presented. First, the pressure induced transition at a constant temperature is investigated using a Tian-Calvet microcalorimeter set-up equipped with a high pressure cell. This device permits simultaneous measurements of the mechanical work and heat associated with the LP → NP transition. It is shown that MIL-53(Al) and MIL-53(Cr) have similar thermodynamic and mechanical ...

The aluminum fumarate MOF A520 or MIL-53-FA is revealed to be a promising material for mechanical energy-related applications with performances in terms of work and heat energies which surpass those of any porous solids reported so far. Complementary experimental and computational tools are deployed to finely characterize and understand the pressure-induced structural transition at the origin of these unprecedented levels of performance.

Increasing competition for marine space requires the appropriate development of indicators to best represent the use of marine areas and the value (whether economic, social and/or cultural) derived from such use. Fishers (the largest group of users) are often under-represented in marine spatial planning processes. Highly-resolved vessel tracking data provide opportunities to map the activities of fishing vessels at a level of detail never before available. Most effort mapping methods have focused ...

Labeling data is often expensive and time-consuming, especially for tasks such as object detection and instance segmentation, which require dense labeling of the image. While few-shot object detection is about training a model on novel (unseen) object classes with little data, it still requires prior training on many labeled examples of base (seen) classes. On the other hand, self-supervised methods aim at learning representations from unlabeled data which transfer well to downstream tasks such as ...

Harvesting solar energy to convert CO2 into chemical fuels is a promising technology to curtail the growing atmospheric CO2 levels and alleviate the global dependence on fossil fuels; however, the assembly of efficient and robust systems for the selective photoconversion of CO2 without sacrificial reagents and external bias remains a challenge. Here we present a photocatalyst sheet that converts CO2 and H2O into formate and O2 as a potentially scalable technology for CO2 utilization. This technology ...

Body-axis elongation constitutes a key step in animal development, laying out the final form of the entire animal. It relies on the interplay between intrinsic forces generated by molecular motors1–3, extrinsic forces exerted by adjacent cells4–7 and mechanical resistance forces due to tissue elasticity or friction8–10. Understanding how mechanical forces influence morphogenesis at the cellular and molecular level remains a challenge1. Recent work has outlined how small incremental steps power cell- ...

The primary aim of this work was to evaluate various methods of nanocellulose production from wheat straw soda pulp. Wheat straw was cooked in 7% NaOH (over dried material.) at a liquid/solid ratio of 10/1 at 100 °C for 150 min to obtain unbleached semichemical pulp. Lignocellulose nanofibers were produced by fibrillation in a high pressure homogenizer, ultrafine friction grinder or twin-screw extruder of cellulose fiber previously extracted from the pulp. Optimizing lignocellulose nanofibers production ...

Abstract This paper presents a real‐time method to animate complex scenes of thousands of trees under a user‐controllable wind load. Firstly, modal analysis is applied to extract the main modes of deformation from the mechanical model of a 3D tree. The novelty of our contribution is to precompute a new basis of the modal stress of the tree under wind load. At runtime, this basis allows to replace the modal projection of the external forces by a direct mapping for any directional wind. We show that ...

Clinical trials frequently include multiple end points that mature at different times. The initial report, typically based on the primary end point, may be published when key planned co-primary or secondary analyses are not yet available. Clinical Trial Updates provide an opportunity to disseminate additional results from studies, published in JCO or elsewhere, for which the primary end point has already been reported. We report 5-year efficacy and safety outcomes from the phase III KEYNOTE-407 ...

Many arguments suggest that neutrophils could play a prominent role in COVID-19. However, the role of key components of neutrophil innate immunity in severe forms of COVID-19 has deserved insufficient attention. We aimed to evaluate the involvement of neutrophil elastase, histone-DNA, and DNases in systemic and multi-organ manifestations of COVID-19.

The association of moderate hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) (15-30 μmol/L) with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) has been challenged by the lack of benefit of vitamin supplementation to lowering homocysteine. Consequently, the results of interventional studies have confused the debate regarding the management of patients with intermediate/severe HHcy.We sought to evaluate the association of intermediate (30-100 μmol/L) and severe (>100 μmol/L) HHcy related to vitamin deficiencies and/or inherited disorders with ...

In stressed cells, phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 2α (eIF2α) controls transcriptome-wide changes in mRNA translation and gene expression known as the integrated stress response. We show here that DCs are characterized by high eIF2α phosphorylation, mostly caused by the activation of the ER kinase PERK (EIF2AK3). Despite high p-eIF2α levels, DCs display active protein synthesis and no signs of a chronic integrated stress response. This biochemical specificity prevents translation arrest ...

Stable and non-toxic fluorescent markers are gaining attention in molecular diagnostics as powerful tools for enabling long and reliable biological studies. Such markers should not only have a long half-life under several assay conditions showing no photo bleaching or blinking but also, they must allow for their conjugation or functionalization as a crucial step for numerous applications such as cellular tracking, biomarker detection and drug delivery. We report the functionalization of stable fluorescent ...

Significance The migration of cellular populations drives influential and disparate biological processes, from the establishment of embryos to the invasion of cancerous tissues. Its deregulation can lead to improper development or pathogenesis of diseases. While many of the mechanisms that promote single-cell migration have been identified, how cell assemblies coordinate these mechanisms is poorly understood. This manuscript details modes of collective migration and the role of tissue dewetting ...

Abstract Cystic fibrosis is caused by a mutation in the gene for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. N ‐butyl 1‐deoxynojirimycin ( N ‐Bu DNJ), a clinical candidate for the treatment of cystic fibrosis, is able to act as a CFTR corrector by overcoming the processing defect of the mutant protein. To explore the potential of multivalency on CFTR correction activity, a library of twelve DNJ click clusters with valencies ranging from 3 to 14 were synthesized. Significantly, ...

Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol are off-flavour compounds related to poor organoleptics and a decrease in consumer satisfaction with drinking water. The relationship between these off-flavour compounds and 39 parameters of water quality (chemical, physical and biological) for three different surface waters from lotic systems that supply potable water to Quebec City and Lévis (Canada) was studied using principal component analysis. The objective of this study was to show that a multidimensional approach ...

Formation of pore-like structures in cell membranes could participate in exchange of matter between cell compartments and modify the lipid distribution between the leaflets of a bilayer. We present experiments on two model systems in which major lipid redistribution is attributed to few submicroscopic transient pores.
