Improving the image quality and speed is an endless demand for printer applications. To meet the market requirements, we have launched the world first laser printer (DocuColor 1256 GA) introducing 780-nm single-mode 8×4 VCSEL arrays in the light exposure system in 2003. The DocuColor 1256 GA features 2400 dots per inch (dpi) resolution which is the highest in the industry and a speed of 50 pages per minute (ppm). A VCSEL array design has an advantage that it can increase the pixel density and also ...

The authors have fabricated oxide-confined vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with metal apertures exhibiting a spatial mode filtering effect. Single-mode continuous-wave output is enhanced up to 3.4 mW by this effect for AlGaAs-based 780-nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with a 3.5-μm-diameter oxide aperture. From numerical calculations, the round-trip loss difference between zeroth- and first-order optical modes as a function of metal aperture size indicates that there is an optimum ...

The low-lying phonon and magnetic excitations of CoO have been studied experimentally and theoretically, both above and below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature. The experiments were performed using the technique of inelastic scattering of slow neutrons with the aid of a triple-axis crystal spectrometer. These experiments were difficult because the phonon and magnetic excitations have very similar frequencies, and also because the specimen has a domain structure in the antiferromagnetic ...

The authors have shown complete polarization control of a 12×8-bit matrix-addressed oxide-confined vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) array, which has an unstrained active region emitting at 780 nm. By using a combination of an elliptical-shaped post structure fabricated on misoriented substrate and upper p-side metal lines elongated in the substrate off-direction, we observed complete polarization pinning in an index-guide type array device. All of the VCSELs in this array lased in a ...

Abstract A new triple-electrode system was developed for the simultaneous determination of l-lactate and d-glucose by using track-etched microporous membrane electrodes, which enabled efficient electrolysis as electroactive substances passed through the electrode. The proposed biosensor was fabricated by alternate stacking of the electrodes and immobilized enzyme reactors along the flow direction of the sample solution. When the sample solution containing l-lactate and d-glucose flowed into the ...

Abstract The new type of amperometric biosensor described herein, which was fabricated by using a track-etched microporous membrane electrode for glucose detection, comprises a prereactor electrode, a detector electrode, and an immobilized enzyme reactor sandwiched between these electrodes. Because the sample solution flows through this system, the interferents are electrolyzed completely at the prereactor, positioned upstream of the enzyme reactor. The increased current response at the detector ...

We describe a method for transporting live squid, Todarodes pacificus (Cephalopoda: Ommastrephidae), using cold-water anesthesia. Squid were placed individually in 30-l plastic bags with 5 l of 0–1°C seawater and 10–15 l of oxygen gas. Thirteen of 14 anesthetized squid survived 6.5 h transport by car and airplane with no signs of distress or shock. The longest survival under anesthesia was 10 h.

Hepatocellular carcinoma ranks among the most common malignancies in Southeast Asia and South Africa. Although there are many modalities of treatment, the recurrence and metastasis rates are high, and the prognosis is unsatisfactory. Gankyrin, a recently found oncoprotein, is a promising target for drug therapy because it is overexpressed in all studied hepatocellular carcinomas. Gankyrin contains six ankyrin repeats and interacts with Rb, Cdk4, and the S6 ATPase of the 26 S proteasome. In this ...

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer in the world. We constructed subtracted cDNA libraries enriched with genes overexpressed in HCCs. Among the 17 genes identified were molecular chaperones, Hsp110, Hsp90B, and Hsp70‐1. Expression of the Hsp110 family members was further analyzed, and increased transcript levels of Hsp110 and Apg‐2, but not Apg‐1, were found in 12 and 14, respectively, of 18 HCCs. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated the overexpression of the proteins ...

Gankyrin is an oncoprotein commonly overexpressed in hepatocellular carcinomas. It interacts with multiple proteins and accelerates degradation of tumor suppressors Rb and p53. Since gankyrin consists of 7 ankyrin repeats and is structurally similar to IκBs, we investigated its interaction with NF-κB. We found that gankyrin directly binds to RelA. In HeLa and 293 cells, overexpression of gankyrin suppressed the basal as well as TNFα-induced transcriptional activity of NF-κB, whereas down-regulation ...

Abstract Experimental shifting cultivation was conducted at two sites, Balai Ringin (B. Ringin) and Sabal in Sarawak, Malaysia. The soils at the B. Ringin site were clayey with strongly acidic nature while those at the Sabal site were sandy with a very low nutrient status. The plots (10 x 10 m2) were burned with vegetation biomass (fuel) amounting to 0 (control), 100,200, and 300 Mg ha-1 for the cultivation of upland rice. At both sites, the fire severity was found to range from moderate to high for ...

Gankyrin is an ankyrin repeat oncoprotein commonly overexpressed in hepatocellular carcinomas. Gankyrin interacts with the S6 proteasomal ATPase and accelerates the degradation of the tumor suppressor Rb. We show here that gankyrin has an antiapoptotic activity in cells exposed to DNA damaging agents. Downregulation of gankyrin induces apoptosis in cells with wild-type p53. In vitro and in vivo experiments revealed that gankyrin binds to Mdm2, facilitating p53-Mdm2 binding, and increases ubiquitylation ...

Background/Aim: Severe sepsis is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Inflammation and coagulation play pivotal roles in the pathogenesis of sepsis leading to multiple organ failure, especially in the liver. The aim of the present study was to assess the mechanism from sepsis to liver damage in a mouse model. Materials and Methods: We created a sepsis model by injecting lipopolysaccharide (LPS) intraperitoneally in mice. At 0, 6, 12, and 24 h following intraperitoneal injection of ...

We introduce the characteristics of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) for use in optical communications. In the field of optical interconnections and networks, 850 nm VCSELs are key optical transmitters due to their high-speed modulation and low power consumption. One promising candidate for achieving high-speed modulations exceeding 50 Gbps is the transverse-coupled-cavity (TCC) VCSEL. In this talk, we demonstrate the characteristics of 850 nm transverse-coupled-cavity VCSELs, which ...

The pathogenesis of the multi-organ dysfunction associated with severe COVID-19 remains poorly understood. Endothelial dysfunction has been identified as a driver of severity in SARS-CoV-2-infections, yet the mechanisms underlying this endotheliopathy remain elusive. We performed proteomics, lipidomics and metabolomics using plasma from severely ill COVID adults, controls and children with acute COVID-19 or multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Multiomic studies identified fluid ...
