The present study identified a novel mechanism for the effects of sanguinarine in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). Sanguinarine treatment of VSMC resulted in significant growth inhibition as a result of G1-phase cell-cycle arrest mediated by induction of p27KIP1 expression, and resulted in a down-regulation of the expression of cyclins and CDKs in VSMC. Moreover, sanguinarine-induced inhibition of cell growth appeared to be linked to activation of Ras/ERK through p27KIP1-mediated G1-phase cell- ...

High-density carbon nanotube networks (CNNs) continue to attract interest as active elements in nanoelectronic devices, nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) and multifunctional nanocomposites. The interplay between the network nanostructure and its properties is crucial, yet current understanding remains limited to the passive response. Here, we employ a novel superstructure consisting of millimeter-long vertically aligned single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) sandwiched between polydimethylsiloxane ( ...

In this work, a mixed-mode magnetorheological (MR) mount is proposed and applied to the vibration control of a flexible beam structure subjected to external disturbances. On the basis of non-dimensional Bingham number, an appropriate size of the MR mount is designed and manufactured. After experimentally evaluating the field-dependent damping force of the MR mount, a structural system consisting of a flexible beam and vibrating rigid mass is established. The governing equation of motion of the system ...

This study was undertaken to evaluate the antithrombotic effects of Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) and its new prescription (KRGP) consisting of five herbs such as Korean red ginseng, Ganoderma, Cinnamomi Cortex, Glycyrrhizae Radix and Laminaria. In rats with blood stasis induced by high molecular weight dextran, KRG and KRGP significantly restored not only the number of platelets and fibrinogen, but also suppressed the fibrin degradation products (FDP) to normal range. In platelet aggregation assay with ...

Recent studies have indicated that Ginsenoside Rb1, one of the major components of ginseng root, may play an important role in protecting cells from damage. Here, we investigated the neuroprotective activity of Rb1 after hypoxic injury in young rats. About 50% animals were dead by exposing hypoxic condition three times in three consecutive days. Then, the pretreatment with Rb1 prior to hypoxic stimulation reduced animal death to 12%, and also significantly reduced the recovery time from hypoxia- ...

A surface of thin square polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) samples (1 × 1 × 0.2 cm3) was irradiated with Ar+ at 1 keV with varying ion dose from 5 × 1014 to 1 × 1017 ions/cm2 with and without an oxygen environment. The irradiated surface of the samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for surface textural changes and x-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) for changes in chemical structure. A wettability test was conducted on the irradiated surface of PTFE samples by water droplets. A Scotch ™ tape ...

This paper presents vibration control of flexible structures using squeeze mode ER mounts. After devising the squeeze mode ER mount, its field-dependent damping forces are evaluated at various exciting frequencies. The ER mounts are then incorporated with a flexible beam structure. The governing equation of motion is obtained and an optimal controller which represents controllable damping force is designed to attenuate unwanted structural vibration. The controller is experimentally realized and ...

Anthocyanin concentration and composition and the effect of steaming and baking on these were evaluated in tubers of Korean red- and purple-fleshed potato cultivars and breeding clones using liquid chromatography with diode array detection and electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (LC-DAD-ESI-MS). Twenty-six anthocyanins were isolated, of which 24 were identified. Remarkably, five cis isomers were identified, of which four, viz., cis-petanin, cis-peonanin, petunidin 3-cis-caffeoylrutinoside-5- ...

The topological relationship between pollution sources in the watershed was, first of all, identified by using the developed digital map of land use and then the pollutant loads generated from each source was estimated by applying a conventional unit loading factor on the obtained digital information of pollution sources. To evaluate the loads delivered from spatially ...

Graphene-based polymer composites possess high thermal conductivity, unfortunately, the high electrical conductivity of these composites limits their application in electronic devices. To address this issue, we report on the thermally conducting yet electrically insulating graphene fluoride (GF) based epoxy composites. GF was coated on cell walls of polyurethane foam (PUF) by a cyclic assembly deposition process, and the [email protected] foam was subsequently compressed and infiltrated with epoxy ...

Abstract Hybrid polyacetylene gels having polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) moieties were prepared by polymerization of 2‐ethynylpyridine using octafunctional POSS as an initiator with changing the feed ratio of POSS to 2‐ethynylpyridine. The resulting black polyacetylene gels were not soluble in any organic solvents such as THF, chloroform, methanol, DMF, and acetone. The polyacetylene gels with higher mole ratio of 2‐ethynylpyridine to POSS show higher thermal stability because of the ...

In this study we investigated the effect of ginseng saponins on the p53-dependent apoptosis in NIH3T3 cells exposed to methyl methanesulfonate (MMS), an alkylating agent. Trypan blue exclusion assay, cell morphology studies, and apoptotic index determined by acridine orange staining showed that the postincubation of MMS-exposed cells in medium containing diol- (PD) or triol-type (PT) ginseng saponins potentiate the apoptotic cell death. FACS analysis indicated that the increased apoptotic cell population ...

The ability of dip-pen nanolithography (DPN) to generate nano- or microarrays of soft or hard materials (e.g., small molecules, DNA, proteins, nanoparticles, sols, and polymers) in a direct-write manner has been widely demonstrated. The transporting of large-sized ink materials such as bacteria, however, remains a significant challenge with this technique. The size limitation of the water meniscus formed between the DPN tip and the solid surface becomes a bottleneck in such diffusion-based molecular ...

Compound K (C-K), a protopanaxadiol ginsenoside metabolite, was previously shown to have immunomodulatory effects. Here, we describe a novel therapeutic role for C-K in the treatment of lethal sepsis through the modulation of Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4-associated signalling via glucocorticoid receptor (GR) binding. In mononuclear phagocytes, C-K significantly repressed the activation of TLR4/lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced NF-kappaB and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), as well as the secretion ...

Ginsenosides, or ginseng saponins, are biologically active ingredients of Panax ginseng. Accumulating evidence suggests that ginsenosides can alleviate pain from injections of noxious chemicals, such as capsaicin [Nah et al. (2000)]. In this study we examined the effects of ginsenoside Rc on the capsaicin-induced inward current in Xenopus oocytes that expresses the vanilloid receptor 1 (VR1). Ginsenoside Rc enhanced the capsaicin-induced inward current in a concentration-dependent and reversible manner, ...
