Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) levels are increased in scalp lesions of patients with alopecia areata (AA), suggesting a role in the development of AA.Recently, a biallelic A/G polymorphism in the MCP-1 promoter at position -2518 has been found, influencing the level of MCP-1 expression in response to an inflammatory stimulus. We investigated whether the presence of these polymorphisms were associated with AA in Korean population.145 Korean patients with AA, 246 healthy subjects without ...

Abstract Probiotics have been proposed to ameliorate cognitive impairment and depressive disorder via the gut–brain axis in patients and experimental animal models. However, the beneficial role of probiotics in brain functions of healthy older adults remains unclear. Therefore, a randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled multicenter trial was conducted to determine the effects of probiotics on cognition and mood in community-dwelling older adults. Sixty-three healthy elders (≥65 years) consumed ...

Abstract Background Muscle weakness is an important etiological factor in plantar fasciitis (PF), but available data on the role of the quadriceps, hamstring, and gastrocnemius (GCM) muscles are limited. The aim of this study was to compare the strength and reaction time of the quadriceps, hamstring, and GCM muscles and foot pressure between patients with PF and normal controls. Methods A total of 21 PF patients and 21 normal controls were enrolled. Muscle strength was measured by the peak torque ...

Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is an essential procedure for lymph node staging in patients with breast carcinoma. Technetium-99m-labelled nanocolloid (99mTc) is the most accurate and widely used lymphatic mapping agent; however, there are concerns pertaining to the associated exposure to radiation. Studies focusing on new agents are required. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of SLN detection using fluorescein and blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in breast carcinoma patients. In this ...

Genetic variants of three human organic cation transporter genes ( hOCT s) were extensively explored in a Korean population. The functional changes of hOCT2 variants were evaluated in vitro, and those genetic polymorphisms of hOCT s were compared among different ethnic populations. From direct DNA sequencing, 7 of 13 coding variants were nonsynonymous single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including four variants from hOCT1 (F160L, P283L, P341L, and M408V) and three from hOCT2 (T199I, T201M, and A270S), ...

The retention behavior of a HfO2 resistive switching memory device with a diameter of 28 nm and an ultra-thin (1 nm) HfO2 layer as the switching layer was examined. Ta and TiN served as the oxygen vacancy (VO) supplying the top and inert bottom electrodes, respectively. Unlike the retention failure phenomenon reported in other thicker oxide-based resistance switching memory devices, the current of both the low and high resistance states suddenly increased at a certain time, causing retention failure. ...

Abnormal foot posture and poor muscle performance are potential causes of plantar fasciitis (PF). However, no study has compared the differences between lower extremity muscle performance and foot pressure in patients who have PF with and without abnormal foot postures. This study aimed to compare the differences in lower extremity muscle performance, such as in the hip, quadriceps, hamstring, and plantar flexor, and foot pressure in patients who have PF with and without flat foot postures. Abstract Background If mild parkinsonian signs can be a marker for Parkinson's disease (PD) development, an impaired Timed Up and Go test (TUG) should also be a marker for prodromal PD. Objectives To investigate whether the Timed Up and Go test is associated with PD. Methods We included 1,196,614 participants at 66 years of age who underwent the National Screening Program for Transitional Ages for Koreans between 2009 and 2014. Timed Up and Go test times were classified into <10 and ≥10 seconds. Incidence ...

The ambipolar behavior of tunneling fieldeffect transistors (TFETs) has been investigated quantitatively by introducing a novel parameter: ambipolarity factor (ν). It has been found that the malfunction of TFET can result from the ambipolar state which is not on- or off- state. Therefore, the effect of ambipolar behavior on the device performance should be parameterized quantitatively, and this has been successfully evaluated as a function of device structure, gate oxide thickness, supply voltage, ...

Radio frequency (RF) performances of hetero-gate-dielectric tunneling field-effect transistors (HG TFETs) have been compared with those of SiO 2 -only and high- k -only TFETs in terms of f T , f max , gate capacitance, channel resistance, and transconductance. HG TFETs can have higher f T / f max and smaller switching time than SiO 2 -only TFETs and high- k -only TFETs because they have higher g m and current drivability than SiO 2 -only TFET and smaller gate capacitance than high- k -only TFET.

A single-stage quasi-resonant flyback converter is proposed for a cost-effective plasma display panel (PDP) sustain power module. The proposed converter operates at the boundary of the continuous- and discontinuous-conduction modes to reduce the switching loss of the primary switch. The bulk capacitor voltage can be independent of the output load and maintained within a practical range for the universal line input. By integrating two power conversion stages into one, the proposed converter provides ...

A single-switch quasi-resonant converter is proposed to obtain high efficiency. Using a variable switching frequency control, this converter is continuously operated at the critical conduction mode for soft switching of the power semiconductor switch. By the resonance, the proposed converter reduces the turn-on loss of the switch without additional active switches and alleviates the reverse-recovery losses of the rectifying diodes. Furthermore, the voltage stress of the rectifying diodes due to the ...

A refined higher-order shear deformation theory is developed for the analysis of free and forced vibration of sigmoid functionally graded materials (S-FGM) plates. The theory, proposed in this paper, considers the parabolic distribution of the transverse shear stress, and satisfies the condition that requires the transverse shear stress to be zero on the upper and lower surfaces of the plate, without the shear correction factor. Unlike the conventional higher-order shear deformation theory, the refined ...

Dynamic instability analysis of S-FGM on elastic medium is investigated using a four-variable refined plate theory. The material is graded in the thickness direction and two power law based on the rule of mixture is used to estimate the effective material properties. The neutral surface position for such S-FGM plates is determined and the third-order shear deformation theory based on exact neutral surface position is employed. If the neutral surface is used, the FGM plates can easily be treated, ...

Hetero-gate-dielectric tunneling field-effect transistors (HG TFETs) with dual-dielectric-constant (k) spacers have been fabricated and characterized. They have a heterogeneous gate dielectric layer which consists of high-k material (HfO2) and SiO2 at the source and drain side, respectively. The dual-k spacer has an inner high-k and outer SiO2 spacer. The fabricated dual-k-spacer HG TFETs show higher on/off current ratio, on-current and better subthreshold slope than control TFETs which use only SiO2 ...

A key to strain engineering of piezoelectric semiconductor devices is the quantitative assessment of the strain‐charge relationship. This is particularly demanding in current InGaN/GaN‐based light‐emitting diode (LED) designs as piezoelectric effects are known to degrade the device performance. Using the state‐of‐the‐art inline electron holography, we have obtained fully quantitative maps of the two‐dimensional strain tensor and total charge density in conventional blue LEDs and correlated these ...

Reinforcing bars embedded in concrete structures are corroded, for example, by the ingression of chlorides from sea sand and deicing materials. Such corrosion induces interior pressure which is increased in the surrounding concrete due to expansion of rebar. As a result, the bond strength and stiffness of reinforcing bar are reduced and the structure eventually undergoes deterioration of concrete which lead to drastic shortening of service life of concrete structures. Accordingly, many researchers ...
