Most research studies investigating the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders affecting musicians and music students have focused on classical music, while less is known about their prevalence in other music genres. The purpose of this study was to document cumulative and point prevalence of playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMD) among music students in Iceland and, specifically, to identify differences between those studying classical vs rhythmic music. We hypothesized that students ...

We isolated and characterized the human β-Trace protein (βTP) gene promoter. βTP, also known as prostaglandin D2 synthase, is a lipocalin secreted from the choroid plexus and meninges into cerebrospinal fluid. Basal transcription of the βTP gene is directed from a core promoter found within the first 325 bases of the 5′-flanking sequence. The βTP gene promoter is responsive to thyroid hormone (3,3′,5-triiodothyronine, T3) and efficiently repressed by unliganded human thyroid hormone receptor β (TRβ). ...

This chapter examines the prevention of neural allograft rejection in a mouse following an in vivo depletion of L3T4 + but not LYT-2 + T-lymphocytes. In the experiment described in the chapter, a mouse model for fetal neural transplantation as a means of determining the degree of immunological privilege afforded neural tissue following transplantation to the central nervous system (CNS). Although L3T4 + T-cells consistently outnumbered LYT-2 + T-cells in isolates from neural allograft, the relative numbers ...

In order to examine questions concerning immunologic privilege of the central nervous system, we placed neocortical transplants into cerebral ventricles of mice. We compared the fates of transplants between fully H-2 compatible (isografts) and H-2 incompatible (allografts) animals. Histologic evaluation comparing animals from iso- and allograft groups revealed significant differences in the number of inflammatory cells and in the degree of necrosis within the grafts. Response to allografted tissue ...

Background The contribution of low-penetrant susceptibility variants to cancer is not clear. With the aim of searching for genetic factors that contribute to cancer at one or more sites in the body, we have analyzed familial aggregation of cancer in extended families based on all cancer cases diagnosed in Iceland over almost half a century. Methods and Findings We have estimated risk ratios (RRs) of cancer for first- and up to fifth-degree relatives both within and between all types of cancers diagnosed ...

Asthma is a complex genetic disorder with a heterogeneous phenotype, largely attributed to the interactions among many genes and between these genes and the environment. Numerous loci and candidate genes have been reported to show linkage and association to asthma and atopy. Although some studies reporting these observations are compelling, no gene has been mapped that confers a sufficiently high risk of asthma to meet the stringent criteria for genomewide significance. Using 175 extended Icelandic ...

Gene expression profiles were examined in freshly isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from two independent cohorts (training and test sets) of glucocorticoid (GC)-sensitive ( n = 64) and GC-resistant ( n = 42) asthma patients in search of genes that accurately predict responders and nonresponders to inhaled corticosteroids. A total of 11,812 genes were examined with high-density oligonucleotide microarrays in both resting PBMC (106 patients) and cells treated in vitro with IL-1β and TNF-α combined ( ...

Histologic and immunocytochemical analyses of fetal neocortical tissue transplanted to the lateral ventricle of inbred adult mice indicate that this tissue survives transplantation well if the donor and host are isogeneic. The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of the mouse is known as the H-2 locus. H-2-incompatible neural transplants (allografts), unlike their H-2-identical counterpart (isografts), are characterized by the presence of T cells comprising both major T-cell subsets and macrophages, ...

This chapter describes the phenotypic analysis of T cells isolated from the brains of mice with iso- and allogeneic intraventricular neural transplants. The chapter indicates the preponderance of MHC class II restricted T lymphocytes in most neural allografts when mice differ completely at the MHC and at mH loci. Depletion of class II-restricted T cells in host mice permits the survival of fully histoincompatible orthotopic skin grafts, while depletion of class I-restricted cells does not. Although, ...

Recent evidence suggests that deficiency in the Th1 cytokine pathway may underlie the susceptibility to allergic asthma. This study examined whether (1) single-nucleotide polymorphisms exist in the promoter region of the two interleukin (IL)-12 subunit genes in patients with asthma; (2) messenger RNA and protein expressions of signal transducers and activators of transcription, IL-12, IFN-γ, and their receptors are altered in asthma; and (3) linkage to genes in the Th1 pathway is present in families ...

Background Little is known about the influence of kinetic chain strength and power on shoulder problems in handball players or the impact of participation-related shoulder load (PSL) during a season. Suboptimal activity of the kinetic chain during throwing might make the shoulder more vulnerable. Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess 1) the association between pre-season measurements and shoulder problems among handball players and 2) whether pre-season strength and power influence the ...

Numerous asthma and atopy loci have been reported in studies demonstrating associations of the asthma-related phenotypes atopy, elevated IgE levels, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness with alleles of microsatellite markers and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within specific cytokine/chemokine and IgE-regulating genes. Although the studies reporting these observations are compelling, most of them lack statistical power. We assessed the nature, pattern, and frequency of SNPs in 24 candidate genes ...

This study investigated the potential of Northern shrimp (Pandelus borealis Kreyer) by-products as a source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs). The by-products (heads, shell and tail) of processing accounted for approximately 50–60% of the catch. Supercritical CO2 extraction (SFE) of the by-products at 35 MPa and 40 °C generated a deep red oil, rich in ω-3 PUFAs, specifically 7.8 ± 0.06% eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 8.0 ± 0.07 % docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

The mode of action of the anxiolytic medicinal plant Souroubea sympetala was investigated to test the hypothesis that extracts and the active principle act at the pharmacologically important GABAA-benzodiazepine (GABAA-BZD) receptor. Leaf extracts prepared by ethyl acetate extraction or supercritical extraction, previously determined to have 5.54 mg/g and 6.78 mg/g of the active principle, betulinic acid, respectively, reduced behavioural parameters associated with anxiety in a rat model. When animals ...
