We demonstrate high-energy terahertz generation from a large-aperture (75 mm diameter) lithium niobate wafer by using a femtosecond laser with energy up to 2 J. This scheme utilizes optical rectification in a bulk lithium niobate crystal, where most terahertz energy is emitted from a thin layer of the rear surface. Despite its simple setup, this scheme can yield 0.19 mJ of terahertz energy with laser-to-terahertz conversion efficiencies of ~0.01%, about 3 times better than ZnTe when pumped at 800 ...

Abstract The valid strong THz absorption at 1.58 THz was probed in the organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite thin film, CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 , fabricated by sequential vacuum evaporation method. In usual solution-based methods such as 2-step solution and antisolvent, we observed the relatively weak two main absorption peaks at 0.95 and 1.87 THz. The measured absorption spectrum is analyzed by density-functional theory calculations. The modes at 0.95 and 1.87 THz are assigned to the Pb-I vibrations of the ...

Using hybrid bilayer systems comprising a molecular organic semiconductor and silicon, we achieve optically controllable active terahertz (THz) modulators that exhibit extremely high modulation efficiencies. A modulation efficiency of 98% is achieved from thermally annealed C60/silicon bilayers, due to the rapid photo-induced electron transfer from the excited states of the silicon onto the C60 layer. Furthermore, we demonstrate the broadband modulation of THz waves. The cut-off condition of the ...

We investigate the details of the precessional motion of the magnetic moment in canted antiferromagnetic YFeO3, which is excited by a linearly polarized terahertz (THz) pulse at room temperature. By tuning the spectral component of the input THz pulse around the quasi-ferromagnetic mode located near 0.3 THz, we have experimentally clarified the resonance effect in the THz control of the spin state. We were able to confirm this result from the simulation based on the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation ...

The characteristics of terahertz (THz) modulation in organic copper phthalocyanine thin films deposited on a Si wafer were investigated by angle-dependent photoexcitation. We reveal that the efficiency of THz modulation reflects not only the angle-dependent reflectivity of the organic thin films that undergo a change of complex refractive index due to photoexcitation but also the laser-induced birefringence induced by a charge density grating in the direction normal to the polarization of the excitation ...

We investigate the terahertz (THz) transmission characteristics of complex slot arrays with various order of rotation symmetry. Our experimental results reveal that an asterisk-shaped aperture with sixfold rotational symmetry is the most appropriate shape for realizing polarization-independent, highly efficient, and frequency-selective transmission of THz radiation. A systematic understanding of the THz transmission characteristics is useful for achieving versatile platforms and custom-designed metallic ...

As the information and communication technology starts to improve, smaller and lighter systems are needed to be flexible in a worldwide market. To accomplish this many ideas on making the heavy and rigid pieces, such as RF filter or duplexer, thin FBAR ...

Modified live vaccines (MLVs) based on genotype 1 strains, particularly C-strain, have been used to prevent and control classical swine fever virus (CSFV) worldwide. Nevertheless, a shift in the predominant CSFV strains circulating in the field from genotype 1 or 3 to genotype 2 is seen. Genotype 2 is genetically distant from the vaccine strains and was recently reported during outbreaks after vaccine failure; this has raised concerns that vaccination has influenced viral evolution. In Korea in 2016, ...

We examined the relation between the echocardiographic morphology of cardiac myxoma and systemic embolism in 25 patients. Two distinct types of myxoma could be identified by echocardiography: round type characterized by solid and round shape with nonmobile surface (n = 13, 52%), and polypoid type characterized by soft and irregular shape with mobile surface (n = 12, 48%); multiple regression analysis revealed the polypoid type of tumor was the only independent predictor of systemic embolism (p = 0.0029).

Membrane disruption of the S. aureus EVs treated with thymol was determined using transmission electron microscopy. Human keratinocyte HaCaT cells ...

The defining pathogenic feature of Parkinson's disease is the age-dependent loss of dopaminergic neurons. Mutations and inactivation of parkin, an ubiquitin E3 ligase, induce Parkinson's disease through accumulation of pathogenic substrates. We found that transgenic overexpression of a parkin substrate, aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase complex interacting multifunctional protein-2 (AIMP2), led to a selective, age-dependent, progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons via activation of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase- ...

Recent advances have been made in the induction of brown fat-like adipocytes (beige) in WAT, which represents an attractive potential strategy for the management and treatment of obesity. Use of natural compounds for browning of white adipocytes can be considered as a safe and novel strategy against obesity. Here, we report that trans-anethole ( ...

Forward and counterpropagated backward terahertz generations were demonstrated via difference frequency generation using a femtosecond laser. By cooling the crystal to reduce terahertz losses, we achieved the terahertz generations of 1.36 and 0.65THz. Temperature-dependent measurements showed gradual intensity increase of the terahertz pulse and red shift of the center frequency as the temperature decrease from 255to143K, although there were insignificant decreases of the spectral bandwidth.

Abstract X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD), caused by an ABCD1 mutation, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder associated with the accumulation of very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA). Cerebral inflammatory demyelination is the major feature of childhood cerebral ALD (CCALD), the most severe form of ALD, but its underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Transmittances of terahertz (THz) pulses through organic copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) films on Si were investigated under optical carrier excitation. As the external laser power increases, the difference between transmitted energies of THz pulses along the forward (CuPc/Si) and backward (Si/CuPc) directions increases. The transmitted energy in the backward direction is larger than six times that in the forward direction under a laser beam of 300 mW. The big difference between the transmitted energies ...

We investigate magnetization states of a canted antiferromagnetic YFeO3 by using terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy under a variation of an external magnetic field. As a quasi-ferromagnetic mode near 0.3 THz is excited by the magnetic field of the THz pulse, a precession of the magnetic moment and its induction decay radiate the THz wave. Since oppositely aligned magnetic domains emit the circularly/elliptically polarized THz waves with opposite helicities, a detection of specific polarization ...
