Three bimetallic Ni-Co (Ni:Co ratio 1:3, 1:1 and 3:1) and two monometallic (Ni and Co) nanoparticles supported on Al2O3 were synthesized by incipient wet impregnation and characterized by various technics (N2-physisorption, XRD, H2-TPR, CO-chemisorption and elemental analysis). It was demonstrated by XRD that NiCo alloys nanoparticles were present on bimetallic solids. The catalytic properties of all catalysts were determined for the hydrodeoxygenation of m-cresol at 340 °C under 4 MPa of total pressure. ...

Biodiesel is a mixture of fatty acid alkyl esters with properties similar to petroleum-based diesel. Thus, biodiesel can be used as either a substitute for diesel fuel or, more commonly, in a fuel blend. Biodiesel production can be catalyzed with mineral acids or bases or enzymes. The use of real-time techniques for monitoring the reaction and evaluating the efficiency of the catalyst can be of great use for optimizing the reaction and monitoring the process. In the present work, an in-line real- ...

To avoid gas hydrate formation during oil and gas production, companies usually employ thermodynamic inhibitors consisting of hydroxyl compounds, such as monoethylene glycol (MEG). However, these inhibitors may cause other types of fouling during production such as inorganic salt deposits (scale). Calcium carbonate is one of the main scaling salts and is a great concern, especially for the new pre-salt wells being explored in Brazil. Hence, it is important to understand how using inhibitors to control ...

The density functional theory is employed to determine the efficiency of 11 exchange-correlation (XC) functionals to compute the 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene (ptcx4, R1 = C(CH3)3) and congeners using the 6-31G(d,p) basis set. The statistical analysis shows that B3LYP, B3PW91 and PBE1PBE are the best XC functionals for the calculation of 1H chemical shifts. Moreover, the best results for the 13C chemical shifts are obtained using the LC-WPBE, M06-2X and wB97X-D functionals. ...

Fumaric acid (FA) is an important commodity in the food and polymer industries; its main route of production is the chemical synthesis from maleic acid (MA). In this work, the isomerization of MA to FA catalyzed by thiourea was investigated. The experiments were performed in an automated reactor with temperature and stirring control, using methanol as the solvent to ensure a homogeneous system and to avoid a possible parallel hydration reaction to malic acid. The reaction kinetics was monitored in ...

The precipitation of gas hydrate and inorganic salts (scale) during oil and gas production represents a significant flow assurance hindrance for the industry. Chemical inhibitors can prevent the fouling process, but specific inhibitors to address a problem could result in synergistic or adverse effects. Simulations in tubes and pipelines are necessary to understand these behaviors by assessing the scaling tendency of the water. The primary objective of this study was to create models using an artificial ...

The pH is an important parameter to control in many industrial processes carried out at high pressures. However, the measurement of pH in pressurized systems is challenging due to the difficulty in the development of pH sensors resistant to these conditions. This work presents a low-cost technique using image analysis and the hs v ( hue, saturation, and value ) color system to measure the pH in atmospheric and pressurized systems. First, a calibration curve was prepared with buffer solutions in a pH ...

The reaction between ammonium chloride and sodium nitrite has been known for its application as a source of heat because of its large enthalpy of reaction, for which it has been used by the oil industry. There have been no known calorimetric studies for the experimental determination of its molar enthalpy of reaction, which is necessary in order to predict the limits achieved for up-scale applications. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR) and reaction calorimetry ...

Nitrogen-generating systems (NGS) have been used by the oil industry for treatments in flow assurance, because the system consists of a highly exothermic nitrosation reaction that can act as an in situ generator of heat for the fluidization of low-melting-point organic deposit or gas hydrate buildup. In this work, attenuated total reflection/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR/FTIR) was used to monitor and quantify the components in the NGS reactions and a 24 central composite design of experiment ...

Summary The highly exothermic reaction between ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) and sodium nitrite (NaNO2) has an important application in the area of flow assurance. Because of the high heat generation, this reaction has been used as a heat source for the fluidization of low-melting-point deposits formed during oil and gas production. Because this reaction is strongly pH dependent, the incorrect choice of pH can result in an uncontrollable temperature increase caused by the system’s inability to dissipate ...

Scale is one of the main flow assurance issues in oil and gas production because reduces productivity or even stops production. The evaluation of scale formation and performance of inhibitors under flow conditions is essential for managing this problem. However, this system does not provide information to understand ...

Abstract: Flow assurance encompasses the technical challenges of transporting hydrocarbon mixtures from the reservoir to the platform and refineries. Challenges in flow assurance include gas hydrate plugs, deposition of paraffin wax, asphaltenes, naphthenates, scale, and corrosion. Therefore, prevention methods, such as the ...

Summary Nitrogen-generating systems (NGSs) are mainly used in the oil industry to fluidize low melting point organic deposits and gas hydrate buildups. They are exothermic reactions between two nitrogenous salts in acidic catalytic media. This work investigates the use of CO2 to promote NGS reactions instead of commonly used acids such as acetic and citric acids, which can be problematic for corrosion control. Sodium nitrite and ammonium chloride were the reactants, and CO2 performance was evaluated ...
