Prior research on the relationship between visual confrontation naming and hippocampal function has been inconclusive. The present study examined this relationship using quantitative 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) to operationalize the function of the left and right hippocampi. The 60-item Boston Naming Test (BNT) was used to measure naming. Our sample included 46 patients with medically intractable, focal mesial temporal lobe epilepsy who had been screened for all pathology other than ...

Background The WHO VISION 2020 global initiative against blindness, launched in 2000, prioritised childhood visual disability by aiming to end avoidable childhood blindness by 2020. However, progress has been hampered by the global paucity of epidemiological data concerning childhood visual disability. The British Childhood Visual Impairment and Blindness Study 2 (BCVIS2) was done to address this evidence gap. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections have revolutionised vision for patients with macular degeneration or diabetic macular oedema. However, the choice of anti-VEGF is controversial. Two drugs licensed for macular oedema are ranibizumab (Lucentis) and aflibercept (Eylea).A third drug, bevacizumab (Avastin), is only licensed for colorectal cancer, and therefore, use in the eye is 'off label'. 1 Yet, all three are effective.Independently supported randomised controlled trials, 2, ...

Previous work has shown several proteins defective in Fanconi anemia (FA) are phosphorylated in a functionally critical manner. FANCA is phosphorylated after DNA damage and localized to chromatin, but the site and significance of this phosphorylation are unknown. Mass spectrometry of FANCA revealed one phosphopeptide, phosphorylated on serine 1449. Serine 1449 phosphorylation was induced after DNA damage but not during S phase, in contrast to other posttranslational modifications of FA proteins. ...
