Abstract Background: Trait impulsiveness is a potential factor that predicts both substance use and certain psychiatric disorders. This study investigates whether there are common structural cerebral correlates of trait impulsiveness and cognitive functioning in a large sample of healthy adolescents from the IMAGEN project. Methods: Clusters of gray matter (GM) volume associated with trait impulsiveness, Cloningers' revised temperament, and character inventory impulsiveness (TCI‐R‐I) were identified ...

The paper prepares new estimates for the elasticity of US trade flows using bilateral, commodity-detailed trade data for 31 countries, using measures of expenditure and trade prices matched to commodity groups, and including a commodity-and-country specific proxy for global supply-cum-variety. Using the United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database (UN Comtrade) we construct bilateral trade flows for 31 countries in four categories of goods based on the Bureau of Economic Analysis's "end-use" ...

ABSTRACT Francisella tularensis is a Gram-negative immune-evasive coccobacillus that causes tularemia in humans and animals. A safe and efficacious vaccine that is protective against multiple F. tularensis strains has yet to be developed. In this study, we tested a novel vaccine approach using artificial pathogens, synthetic nanoparticles made from catanionic surfactant vesicles that are functionalized by the incorporation of either F. tularensis type B live vaccine strain ( F. tularensis LVS [LVS- ...

Abstract Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) shows an increasing prevalence and is associated with the development of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis as the major risk factors of liver-related mortality in this disease. The therapeutic possibilities are limited and restricted to life style intervention, since specific drugs for NAFLD are unavailable so far. TNFα has been implicated as a major pathogenic driver of NAFLD. TNFα-mediated liver injury occurs mainly via TNF-receptor-1 (TNFR1) signaling, ...

Claudin-11, a tight junction protein, is indispensable in the formation of the radial component of myelin. ABSTRACT Background With pathway‐specific trials in PD associated with variants in the glucocerebrosidase gene (PD GBA ) under way, we need markers that confirm the impact of genetic variants in patient‐derived biofluids in order to allow patient stratification merely based on genetics and that might serve as biochemical read‐out for target engagement. Objective To explore GBA‐pathway‐specific biomarker profiles cross‐sectionally (TUEPAC‐MIGAP, PPMI) and longitudinally (PPMI). Methods We measured enzyme ...

We examined the effects of dietary soy on the contributions of endothelium-derived hyperpolarising factor (EDHF), nitric oxide (NO), and oxidative stress to vascular tone in isolated aortic rings and small mesenteric and pulmonary arteries in vitro. Male Wistar rats were either continuously fed a soy-deficient diet (SD) or switched from a soy-deficient diet to a soy-rich one for 6 months (SW). Contractile responses were generally smaller in arteries from SW rats. In mesenteric arteries, this difference ...

Abstract In most contemporary societies, people underestimate the extent of economic inequality, resulting in lower support for taxation and redistribution than might be expressed by better informed citizens. We still know little, however, about how understandings of inequality arise, and therefore about where perceptions and misperceptions of it might come from. This methodological article takes one step toward filling this gap by developing a research design—a blueprint—to study how people’s understandings ...

A preparation method for quantification of bacteria in tissues is obligatory to reduce tissue mass, concentrate the target, purify, remove inhibitory substances and to achieve constant target recovery rates. No preparation method has been available until now for a high mass of tissue applicable for routine use and analytical veterinary diagnostics. This study describes an easy-to-use tissue preparation protocol to quantify Gram-positive bacteria from a large volume of tissue matrix. A previously ...

Pneumomediastinum is the presence of air in the mediastinum. Spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) is an infrequent, benign, and self-limiting condition that predominantly affects young males and pregnant females. It is important to distinguish pneumomediastinum symptoms from similar clinical findings that require immediate treatment, such as cardiac tamponade, angina pectoris, dissecting aortic aneurysm, mediastinitis, and pulmonary embolism. This report describes 2 cases of SPM managed at University ...

Significance We characterize in humans a coordinated network of brain activity describing neurobehavioral correlates of reward anticipation. The network involves nodes in striatal and cortical brain regions, which are preferentially associated with distinct externalizing behaviors—hyperactivity and alcohol consumption—suggesting that the heterogeneity of reward-related behaviors might be accounted for by different association patterns of nodes and their connecting links. In a genome-wide association ...

ABSTRACT Francisella tularensis , a bacterial biothreat agent, has no approved vaccine in the United States. Previously, we showed that incorporating lysates from partially attenuated F. tularensis LVS or fully virulent F. tularensis Schu S4 strains into catanionic surfactant vesicle (V) nanoparticles (LVS-V and Schu S4-V, respectively) protected fully against F. tularensis LVS intraperitoneal (i.p.) challenge in mice. However, we achieved only partial protection against F. tularensis Schu S4 intranasal ( ...

Armin van Aken, D.W. de Hoop, Katharina Friedli, Stefan Mann,
Observational studies are important in livestock science. As treatment is not assigned randomly in such studies, selection bias can be a problem. This is often addressed by matching methods. However, if treatment and control groups differ considerably in their characteristics, it might be necessary to additionally prune observations that lack overlap in the opposite group. "Matching Frontier" method was developed because pruning observations manually often results in suboptimal solutions. The feasibility ...

Summary N-linked glycosylation is an important posttranslational modification in all eukaryotes, but little is known about the N-glycoproteomes in nonmammalian systems. Here, we measure N-glycoproteomes of the major model organisms Arabidopsis thaliana , Schizosaccharomyces pombe , Saccharomyces cerevisiae , Caenorhabditis elegans , Drosophila melanogaster , and Danio rerio , representatively spanning the eukaryotic domain of life. The number of detected N-glycosylation sites varied between 425 in fission yeast, 516 ...
