This paper describes the pressure distribution in the bearing clearance of circular aerostatic thrust bearings with a single air supply inlet. For high air supply pressure, large bearing clearance, and a relatively small bearing outer radius, it was believed that shock waves are caused and that a complex fluid flow structure is formed in the bearing clearance. Accordingly, analytical models based on the occurrence of shock wave in the bearing clearance have been proposed. Recently, very small aerostatic ...

Initial studies have shown ultrahigh-dose methylcobalamin to be a promising agent. Objective To validate the efficacy and safety of ultrahigh-dose methylcobalamin for patients with ALS enrolled within 1 year of onset. Design, Setting, and Participants This was a multicenter, placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized phase 3 clinical trial with a 12- ...

From first-principles calculations, we estimated the trapping energy of hydrogen atom at the interstitial site of perfect crystals of Mg2Si and Al7FeCu2 intermetallic compounds in the aluminum matrix. We found that Al7FeCu2 trapped hydrogen atoms strongly, whereas Mg2Si did not. The highest trapping energy in Al7FeCu2 is 0.56 eV/atom. We also found that the density of hydrogen trapping can be increased up to about 13 atoms/nm3 while keeping high trapping energy of about 0.40 eV/atom. We inferred ...

Al–Zn–Mg alloys are representative high-strength aluminum alloys, but hydrogen embrittlement hinders further strengthening. The role of nanovoids in the hydrogen embrittlement of a hydrogen-charged Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloy is examined using high-resolution imaging-type synchrotron X-ray tomography. Although nanovoids are initiated during deformation, their growth and coalescence behaviors are limited. Hydrogen partitioning analysis indicates that this is because most of the formed vacancies are not stabilized ...

The local deformation and fracture behavior of high-Zn Al-Zn-Mg(-Cu) alloys under hydrogen influence were investigated by in situ tests through synchrotron X-ray tomography. Intergranular and quasi-cleavage fractures were induced by hydrogen, and strain localization by the presence of cracks was not observed by 3D strain mapping. These results suggest that the strain localization at the crack tip is smaller than the measurement limit of 3D strain mapping. The average crack-tip-opening displacements, ...

To develop high strength Al-Zn-Mg alloys, suppression of hydrogen embrittlement is indispensable. The hydrogen embrittlement behavior of different prepared Al-10.1-1.2Mg alloys with various hydrogen trap sites was observed using in situ synchrotron X-ray tomography in this study. Furthermore, we quantified the hydrogen partitioning based on hydrogen occupancies and hydrogen trap site densities in the prepared alloys. The combined analysis of hydrogen embrittlement and hydrogen partitioning showed ...

Livestock manure is an animal waste that is generated worldwide, and is one of the most abundant waste materials generated in Japan. Its excess application as a fertilizer can cause negative environmental problems; i.e., groundwater pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. When livestock manure is used as a solid fuel, a significant amount of energy is required to remove the high water content by conventional heating, and the resulting dry material has a self-ignition risk that makes it difficult ...

The compounds in diesel exhaust particles (DEP) that are responsible for vasodilatation were isolated and characterized for the first time. From benzene extract of DEP, 2-methyl-4-nitrophenol, 3-methyl-4-nitrophenl and 4-nitrophenol were isolated, and their vasodilatation activities were confirmed. 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol caused dilatation of rat thoracic artery, and the other two nitrophenols, also showed vasodilatation activities.

Metastable phases in aluminium alloys are the primary nano-scale precipitates which have the biggest contribution to the increase in the tangible mechanical properties. The continuous increase in hardness in the 7xxx aluminium alloys is associated with the phase transformation from clusters or GP-zones to the metastable η′ phase. The high-resolution electron imaging is used to observe the precipitates and reconstruct a kinetic model that might explain the transformation. This work is an attempt ...

The pursuit of strong and ductile Al alloys with superior resistance to hydrogen embrittlement (HE) is practically significant across the aerospace and transportation industries among others. Unfortunately, effective ways to progress on the strength-HE trade-off for Al-alloys remain elusive. Here, we systematically induce the precipitation of ...

Exosomes, the natural vehicles of various biological molecules, have been examined in several research fields including drug delivery. Although understanding of the biological functions of exosomes has increased, how exosomes are transported between cells remains unclear. We hypothesized that cell tropism is important for effective exosomal intercellular communication and that parental cells regulate exosome movement by modulating constituent exosomal molecules. Herein, we demonstrated the strong ...

The silicon beam structure is essentially stress free because the whole structure is made of uniformly doped single-crystal silicon. This thin-beam process ...

Therefore, this paper investigates the cause of the parallel force generated by a vibrating surface, experimentally and numerically. In ...

Significance This study investigates a previously unidentified cysteine-rich peptide (CRP). CRPs have diverse roles in plant growth and development, such as control of stomata density and guidance of pollen-tube elongation. Despite numerous studies on CRPs in Arabidopsis thaliana , there are still many peptides with unknown function. We identify a previously unidentified rice CRP named Regulator of Awn Elongation 2 (RAE2) and show that it is cleaved specifically in the spikelet to promote awn elongation. ...
