Abstract An optical microscope enables image-based findings and diagnosis on microscopic targets, which is indispensable in many scientific, industrial and medical settings. A standard benchtop microscope platform, equipped with e.g., bright-field and phase-contrast modes, is of importance and convenience for various users because the wide-field and label-free properties allow for morphological imaging without the need for specific sample preparation. However, these microscopes never have capability ...

AlGaN-based deep-ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (DUV-LEDs) were fabricated on AlN substrates. The AlN substrates were prepared by growing thick hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE)-AlN layers on bulk AlN substrates prepared by physical vapor transport (PVT). After growing an LED structure, the PVT-AlN substrates were removed by mechanical polishing. This process allowed the fabrication of DUV-LEDs on HVPE-AlN substrates with high crystalline quality and DUV optical transparency. The DUV-LEDs exhibited ...

Abstract Background and study aims Recently, histological inflammation has been suggested to be an important predictor of sustained remission or relapse of ulcerative colitis (UC). In this study, we retrospectively compared severity of histological inflammation with endoscopic findings in UC patients with mucosal healing (MH) in the remission maintenance phase, and investigated whether histological healing could be a predictor of sustained remission. Patients and methods This study included 166 patients ...

A novel 3D-QSAR procedure, the Voronoi Field Analysis, was applied to four series of synthetic pyrethroids individually and as combinations to understand the physicochemical meaning of the series differentiation of the classical QSAR pattern into two types. The 3D-QSAR correlation equation for each series was physicochemically nearly equivalent with the corresponding classical QSAR equation. The differentiation was not totally inconsistent with information about the degree of the 3D structural similarity ...

Label-free optical imaging is valuable in biology and medicine because of its non-destructive nature. Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) and molecular vibrational imaging (MVI) are the two most successful label-free methods, providing morphological and biochemical information, respectively. These techniques have enabled numerous applications as they have matured over the past few decades; however, their label-free contrasts are inherently complementary and difficult to integrate due to their reliance ...

This research sets out to quantify the mortality and economic loss in individual Asian countries caused by the PM2.5 emissions induced by the consumption of the world's five highest-consuming countries (US, China, Japan, Germany, UK). In 2010 alone, the economic impact of these five countries' consumption caused a loss of almost 45 billion US dollars due to the premature deaths of more than 1 million people in Asia, including 15 thousand children younger than 5 years old. The percentage ratio of ...

The three-dimensional “bioactive” conformations of various types of pyrethroid insecticides were deduced from among optimized conformations which were generated on the basis of the exhaustive conformational exploration of the reference compound, MTI-800. A “folded” rather than an “extended” conformation was proposed to be the “bioactive structure” of pyrethroid molecules included in this study. The folded “bioactive” structures were further analyzed in terms of molecular (dis)similarity indices to elucidate ...

We have developed a new method to investigate the relaxation time of the dipole moment in polarization clusters in BaTiO3. Time correlation of speckle intensities was measured by the use of a double pulsed soft x-ray laser. The evolution of the relaxation time of the dipole moment near the Curie temperature (T(C)) was investigated. The maximum relaxation time (approximately 90 ps) is shown to appear at a temperature of 4.5 K above the T(C), being coincident with the one where the maximum polarization ...

Liver diseases drive the development and progression of atrial fibrillation (AF). The Fibrosis-4 (FIB4) index is a non-invasive scoring method for detecting liver fibrosis, but the prognostic impact of using it for AF patients is still unknown. Herein, we evaluated using the FIB4 index as a risk assessment tool for cardiovascular events and mortality in patients with AF.We performed a post-hoc analysis of a prospective, observational multicenter study. Abstract Initial growth condition of AlN on sapphire substrate by HVPE was investigated. It was found that polarity of AlN was significantly affected by temperature even under the condition of AlCl 3 pre‐flow and that polarity was drastically changed from N‐polarity to Al‐polarity with increasing temperature around 1000 °C. Polarity of AlN was easily controlled by growth temperature. By utilizing these findings and etching technique by alkaline solution, AlN nano‐islands were successfully obtained ...

A novel hybrid seed substrate for preparing a freestanding (0001) AlN substrate was proposed. The seed substrate consists of thin single-crystalline AlN layer and thick poly-crystalline AlN base, which is expected to remove the differences of thermal expansion coefficient and lattice constant between a subsequently grown thick AlN epitaxial layer and the seed substrate. A freestanding AlN substrate (diameter: 20 mm; thickness: 180 μm) was successfully prepared, although the freestanding AlN substrate ...

Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) has been implicated in the uterine endometrial functions of implantation and decidualization; however, not much is known about its myometrial contractile function. Herein we characterized the uterotonic effects of LPA in non-pregnant (estrus) and peri-parturient rats in vitro. LPA dose-dependently (0.01-10 μM) stimulated the amplitude and integral, but not the frequency, of the uterine strip contraction of estrous rats.
