This paper describes the measurement and theoretical interpretation of the refractive index, n′, of a range of disordered aqueous colloidal dispersions. Concentrations up to 50% by volume and particle sizes in the range 0.1–1.5 µm were used. All dispersions were highly turbid and required special refractometric methods. These methods gave concordant results, experimental error generally increasing with increasing particle size. The results for all dispersions show that n′ is linearly related to ...

ABSTRACT Changes in particle morphology (size, shape, and appearance) have been monitored during drying of drops of foods and food-related materials. The apparatus produces a single stream of drops of uniform size, using a vibrating-orifice device for drop production. The drop size and the time-temperature history of the drops as they fall can be varied and controlled. Qualitative observations are reported for drying of aqueous solutions of lactose, maltodextrin, skim milk, and coffee extract, with ...

This paper describes the design of two different specific speed microhydro turbines operating at heads between 6 and 12 m, at small scale and up to heads of 50 m at larger scales. The features are specifically tailored for ease of manufacture and uniquely resistant to debris blockage. Test machines are described and test results given; hydraulic efficiencies of over 70% have been achieved in all test models despite the fact that the turbine blades are made from flat plate, specifically to simplify ...

Keith Alexander, Marilyn Parsons,

The phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK) gene complex of Trypanosoma brucei contains three tandemly linked related genes. One gene encodes a cytoplasmic PGK, while another encodes a PGK isozyme localized to glycosomal microbodies. In this communication, we report that the third gene in this complex encodes a 56-kDa molecule which is also localized to the glycosomal core. DNA sequence analysis indicates that this gene contains multiple substitutions and a large insertion in the amino domain, but that it ...

Also takes a positive look forward at what the future holds and possible steps in changing the ways of service provision. Discusses the organization of the delivery of facilities alongside new technology and this must be foremost in managers′ thinking. A balanced approach is needed in using consultants and contractors and ways of adopting an in‐house control, such ...

Bryant Keith Alexander, John T. Warren,

This aesthetic essay is concerned with the notion of democratization and the ways in which policies and “practiced orientations “ to inclusiveness and diversity, effect colorized and racialized bodies in traditional educational spaces. The essay uses the critical autopoietic narratives of a Black male scholar and a White male scholar set within a dialogue as a communicative and intercultural approach of influence and cooperation. The authors suggest that this method is the sin quo non of the democratic ...

Bryant Keith Alexander,

This article uses and advocates the use of interpretive ethnography as a method of pedagogical reflexivity and scholarly production. Specifically, it seeks to further the discussion of the classroom as a cultural site that places the teacher as both participant and observer in the intense cultural negotiation of lived experience, curriculum, and politics of education. Using the constructive metaphor of pedagogy as drag, the project also suggests that similar to drag (and the performance of gender), ...

Keith Alexander, E.P. Giddens, A.M. Fuller,

This paper describes the design of four different specific speed microhydro propeller turbines operating at heads between 4 m and 9 m, and their application to a wider range of heads and outputs by scaling. The features are specifically tailored for ease of manufacture and uniquely resistant to debris blockage. Test machines are described and test results given; hydraulic efficiencies of over 68% have been achieved in all test models despite the fact that these turbines’ blades are planar, further ...
