ABSTRACT: This article uses social movement theory to analyse campaigns against a new type of government-sponsored school – the Academy – in four areas of England. It seeks to identify the social composition of anti-Academy campaigns, to track their encounters with proponents of the new schools and to describe the characteristic forms of their campaigning strategies. In doing so, the article aims to help place research into educational opposition and contestation closer to the centre of researchers' ...

Despite a tendency for the complexity of physical–biological models to increase, simple coupled models remain useful for some applications and can provide insights into crucial links between physical and biological processes. This argument is illustrated with an account of a simple 3-box model intended to help assess the capacity of fjords to assimilate nutrients from fish farms. The model, a dynamic version of the UK “Comprehensive Studies Task Team” (CSTT) steady-state model for eutrophication, ...

Ken Jones,

This article makes a contribution to discussion on the neo-liberal reshaping of education in Western Europe. It argues for a greater attentiveness on the part of education researchers to collective social actors such as trade unions and social movements. Making use of concepts from Gramsci and from Poulantzas, it suggests that such actors had a formative role in the making of post-war education systems, and that reducing their influence is now an important objective of governments across the European ...

Ken Jones,

Fear of emotions inhibits the spread of games and simulations. This fear also damages the design, briefing, running, and debriefing. Emotions and reasons are not poles apart. Emotions are not irrational, and they have a history in a person’s thoughts, experiences, and values. They do not arise out of nothing. Emotions are what make us human. They are extremely varied. Instead of being feared, they should be welcomed and discussed in both the briefing and debriefing.

A class of potent, selective adenosine A(3) receptor antagonists was obtained via optimisation of the screening hit N-[4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-thiazol-2-yl]-acetamide. Structural modifications of this hit revealed very quickly that a 5-(pyridin-4-yl) substituent on the 2-aminothiazole ring was optimal for high potency at the adenosine A(3) receptor. Structure activity relationship studies led to both potent and selective A(3) receptor antagonists, including N-[5-pyridin-4-yl-4-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)- ...
