Large volumes of fluid tailings are generated during the extraction of bitumen from oil sands. As part of their reclamation plan, oil sands operators in Alberta propose to transfer these fluid tailings to end pit lakes and, over time, these are expected to develop lake habitats with productive capabilities comparable to natural lakes in the region. This study evaluates the potential impact of various oil sands process-affected waters (OSPW) on the reproduction of adult fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) ...

The development of ferroelectric properties in barium titanate (BaTiO3) polycrystalline films has been investigated as a function of substrate type. The films were deposited by physical vapor deposition (PVD) onto different, Pt-coated substrates (magnesium oxide, thermally oxidized silicon, and sapphire) and annealed at temperatures from 725 to 1050 °C. Grain sizes from 50 to 200 nm were produced, with structural and dielectric properties that showed a marked transition from nonferroelectric to ferroelectric ...

Nanometer-resolved lateral variations in the Schottky barrier height (SBH) formed at a chemically prepared Au/n-type GaAs interface were measured using ballistic-electron-emission microscopy (BEEM). The spatial profile and the statistical distribution of the SBH's thus obtained were compared to current-voltage (IV) and capacitance-voltage (CV) characteristics of the same metal-semiconductor contact. This comparison showed that the macroscopic SBH obtained from the IV measurements can be successfully ...

Ballistic electron emission microscopy (BEEM) has been performed on Au/ZnSe (001) diodes prepared in ultra high vacuum. An average barrier height (BH) of 1.37 eV is found for Au/n-ZnSe in close agreement with previously published values for diodes measured by conventional techniques. The BH distribution is relatively narrow, from 1.32 to 1.43 eV, consistent with cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy which indicates that the interface is abrupt, and without reaction products. These results ...

Ballistic electron emission microscopy (BEEM) is a technique for the measurement of nanoscopic spatial variations in the barrier height of metal-semiconductor contacts. We have used BEEM in conjunction with simultaneous scanning tunneling microscopy observations of topography, as well as cross-sectional and plan-view transmission electron microscopy, to investigate diode nonidealities and relate them to microstructure. Au/ZnSe and PtSi/Si diodes were examined using these techniques. When analyzed ...

Minocycline has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic properties that explain the renewed interest in its use as an adjunctive treatment for psychiatric and neurological conditions. Following the completion of several new clinical trials using minocycline, we proposed an up-to-date systematic review and meta-analysis of the data available. The PICO (patient/population, intervention, comparison and outcomes) framework was used to search 5 databases aiming to identify randomized controlled ...

While performance assessments of constructed wetlands sites around the world have appraised their capacity for effective removal of organics, a large variance remains in these sites' reported ability to retain nutrients, which appears to depend on differences in design, operation and climate factors. Nutrient retention is a very important objective for constructed wetlands, to avoid eutrophication of aquatic environments receiving their effluents. This study assessed the performance of constructed ...
