Michelle M. Arnold, Kenneth E. Murray, Max L. Nibert,

Genome replication of mammalian orthoreovirus (MRV) occurs in cytoplasmic inclusion bodies called viral factories. Nonstructural protein microNS, encoded by genome segment M3, is a major constituent of these structures. When expressed without other viral proteins, microNS forms cytoplasmic inclusions morphologically similar to factories, suggesting a role for microNS as the factory framework or matrix. In addition, most other MRV proteins, including all five core proteins (lambda1, lambda2, lambda3, ...

Abstract The biochemical features of two families with purine nucleoside phosphorylase deficiency are compared. Laboratory studies and an evaluation of kinetic and physical properties of erythrocyte purine nucleoside phosphorylase give evidence that a) the degree of abnormality in uric acid and nucleoside concentrations in plasma and urine reflect the severity of the enzymatic deficiency and b) structural alterations of the mutant enzymes result from structural gene mutations and demonstrate genetic ...

Reaction of AsH3 with Fe(CO)5 in a hydrocarbon solvent at 110° C provides an improved route to (μ3-As)2Fe3(CO)9, while the corresponding reaction at 70° C with Fe2(CO)9 has given the new cluster [Fe2(CO)8(μ4-As)]2[Fe2(CO)6], which has been shown by X-ray crystallography to consist of four AsFe2 triangles linked by spiro-As atoms and an FeFe edge. The reaction at 20° C of AsH3 with Co2(CO)8 gave the known trimer [μ4-AsCo3(CO)9]3 which was fully characterised by an X-ray diffraction study.

Changes in retinal microvascular perfusion revealed by fluorescein angiography have been reported in patients undergoing coronary artery surgery. Quantification of these changes is important and current techniques depend on careful visual inspection of the angiograms by humans. Computer image processing methods can be used to identify and highlight differences, but geometrical registration of the images is a prerequisite to the comparisons. Ulli Arnold, Kenneth N. Bernard,

The literature of the past 30 years is liberally sprinkled with contributions dedicated to the improvement of corporate efficiency: one of the key areas to have been addressed is that of costs, which has focused attention on, inter alia, the costs of inventory. Frequently it appears that the development of a logistical system which can eliminate or significantly reduce inventory is not only assumed to be universally practicable but ipso facto desirable. However, in much the same way as many companies ...

Nucleic acid polymerases catalyze nucleotidyl transfer reactions with two proton-transfer events, deprotonation of the 3′-hydroxyl nucleophile and protonation of the pyrophosphate leaving group. Functional analyses now show that the proton donor for the latter transfer is an active-site residue. Nucleic acid polymerases catalyze the formation of DNA or RNA from nucleoside-triphosphate precursors. Amino acid residues in the active site of polymerases are thought to contribute only indirectly to catalysis ...
