John Bainbridge, Kenneth B. Walker,

Expression of the normal form of prion protein (PrPC) has been reported on a wide range cells including lymphocytes and antigen presenting cells, however the functional role of PrPC remains to be fully elucidated. Here we report the effect of reintroducing the PrP gene into splenocytes derived from prion knockout (PrP 0/0) mice and comparing their responses with splenocytes lacking a functional PrP gene. Reintroduction of the PrP gene was carried out by transfecting cells with pC1PrPEH, a plasmid ...

Since a nuclear isomeric transition may take place by emission of either a gamma-ray or an internal conversion electron, the total rate of decay may be expected to vary with any change in electronic environment, such as a difference in chemical state. Differences in the decay constant of the isomer ${\mathrm{Tc}}^{99m}$ (6 hours) in different states of chemical combination were measured by the double ionization chamber balance method. $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ for this isomer is determined mainly by the ...

Part I. The relative abundance of the isotopes of lithium. Magnetic analysis of the positive rays of lithium from a heated spodumene source shows no change with temperature in the relative abundance of Li7 and Li6. This is in agreement with Aston and Morand but at variance with the results of G. P. Thomson, Dempster, and the similar work of Hundley. A possible explanation of Hundley's and Dempster's results appears when the effects of space charge and the geometry of the tube are considered. In ...

(1) The simultaneous fulfillment of the conditions for high resolving power, sensitivity and dispersion have been obtained in an instrument for the investigation of isotopes. Important features of the design are the linearity of the mass scale over a broad region of the recording plate, the elimination of the troublesome effects of surface charges on the electric deflection plates, and the use of relatively wide collimating slits at small separation. The ions diverging from the second collimating ...

Kenneth T. Bainbridge,

The ratio of the masses of He and ${\mathrm{H}}^{1}$ was measured by comparison of ${\mathrm{He}}^{++}$ with ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}^{1+}$ on fourteen spectra, and the measurements give He: ${\mathrm{H}}^{1}$=3.971283\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.000042. If He=4.00216\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.00013 on the ${\mathrm{O}}^{16}$ scale as given by Aston, then ${\mathrm{H}}^{1}$=1.007775\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.000035 in excellent agreement with the value 1.00778 reported by Aston. A method is suggested for the determination ...

Albert A. Bartlett, Kenneth T. Bainbridge,

A large beta-ray spectrometer based on the theory worked out by Siegbahn, Svartholm, and others has been constructed. The magnet design is unique in that the return path in iron for the gap flux is provided by a circumferential yoke rather than by an axial core. The mean radius of the electron orbits is r0=30 cm and the maximum acceptable solid angle with present diaphragms is 0.8 percent of a sphere. Construction is discussed and data are presented to show the resolution to be approximately 0.4 ...
