Abstract A detergent system is treated as a lyophobic colloid system and the interaction between particulate soil and fibres in an electrolyte solution is represented by the superposition of the potentials due to London—van der Waals' attraction, the Born repulsion and double layer repulsion. The resultant potential‐energy curves are used to discuss the influence of electrical forces in soil removal and redeposition. It is shown that the particle size of the soil, and the concentration and valency ...

Abstract The effect of calcium ions in the substrate on surface films of α‐substituted fatty acids has been investigated. It is shown that the introduction of an ethyl group in the α‐positions of lauric, myristic and palmitic acids prevents calcium ions from causing surface films of these acids to become solid and brittle at pH 7.5. Fatty acids with main chains longer than C 16 are found to give brittle solid films on substrates containing calcium ions at pH 7.5. The effect on the calcium ion/myristic ...

Abstract Force‐area isotherms have been obtained for mixed monolayers of arachidic acid and α‐ethyl‐stearic acid on conductivity water and M/400‐CaCl 2 solution at pH 7.5. There is evidence of molecular interaction on both substrates as the mixed films are always more condensed than an ideal mixture of the two constituents. On M/400‐CaCl 2 solution, mixed surface films containing more than 75% of α‐ethylstearic acid are fluid at all surface pressures; this indicates that the condensation in the ...
