Garrett A. Keating, Kenneth T. Bogen,
Heterocyclic amines (HAs) are formed in numerous cooked foods commonly consumed in the diet. A method was developed to estimate dietary HA levels using HA concentrations in experimentally cooked meats reported in the literature and meat consumption data obtained from a national dietary survey. Cooking variables (meat internal temperature and weight loss, surface temperature and time) were used to develop relationships for estimating total HA concentrations in six meat types. Concentrations of five ...

Conjugates between cytochrome c (Cc) and colloidal Au particles have been prepared. These conjugates, purified by centrifugation/resuspension, provide a reproducible means of positioning a biomolecule analyte between two metal surfaces: the metal nanoparticle to which the biomolecule is bound and an aggregated Ag sol used as a substrate for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). SERS spectra for Ag:Cc:Au sandwiches made by addition of Cc:Au conjugates to aggregated Ag show that the protein retains ...

This manuscript reports the demonstration of strong interparticle electromagnetic coupling in nanoparticle:molecule:nanoparticle sandwiches. These assemblies were prepared by adsorption of cytochrome c (Cc)-coated colloidal Au nanoparticles onto aggregated colloidal Ag. Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra for the Cc:Au conjugates (Ag:Cc:Au) were compared to those obtained by direct adsorption of Cc (Ag:Cc) at several visible excitation wavelengths. The use of identically prepared samples ...

Abstract The DNA and protein sequences of single‐stranded DNA binding proteins (SSBs) encoded by the plP71a, plP231a, and R64 conjugative plasmids have been determined and compared to Escherichia coli SSB and the SSB encoded by F‐plasmid. Although the amino acid sequences of all of these proteins are highly conserved within the NH 2 ‐terminal two‐thirds of the protein, they diverge in the COOH‐terminal third region. A number of amino acid residues which have previously been implicated as being either ...

Gene 32 protein (g32P) isolated from bacteriophage T4-infected Escherichia coli and from an overproduction vector derived from the plasmid pKC30 contains 1 mol of tightly incorporated Zn(II) per mol of protein. A linear incorporation of three molar equivalents of p-hydroxymercuriphenylsulfonate (PMPS) results in a linear release of 1.1 mol of Zn(II) from the protein. Reversal of formation of the g32P-PMPS complex with thiol in the presence of EDTA results in a zinc-free apo-g32P. Cd(II) and Co(II) ...

† In a comparative study of infection prophylaxis, patients with acute leukemia receiving remission induction therapy were assigned either no prophylaxis, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, ketoconazole, or the combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim and ketoconazole. Both sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim and the combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim and ketoconazole substantially reduced the overall incidence of infection consequent to a marked decrease in bacterial infection. ...
