Manoeuvring performance of a ship in actual sea is significantly different from that in calm water due to wave loads. It is necessary to estimate the ship's manoeuvrabilities in waves at the early design stage for its safe operations. Several theoretical approaches have been attempted to estimate the manoeuvring performance of ships with considerations of wave loads in recent decades, but there are insufficient model test data for the validation of numerical results. In this study, free-running ...

The two different Li2B4O7 single crystals prepared from Li2CO3 and B2O3 mixed powder (LTBm) and Li2B4O7 powder (LTBp) were compared in the ac impedance study for the [001] direction in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 10 MHz at temperatures up to 350 °C. The thickness dependence of the complex resistivities exhibits that LTBm has distinct grain boundary-like effect while LTBp does not. This boundary effect may be due to the charge-depleted region constructed temporarily by the ion blocking of the ...

Abstract Four kinds of azo dyes and their metal-azo dyes were synthesized in order to obtain a high reflective index and better thermal stability as a recording material for DVD-R. Several kinds of novel azo dyes based on benzoic acid, 6-methoxybenzothiazole, benzothiazole-6-carboxylic acid, and benzimidazole have been synthesized. These azo dyes reacted with metal ions, such as Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Co2+, as ligands. All structures of the compounds were confirmed by 1H-NMR and FT-IR analyses. The ...

Carbon-coated Li4Ti5O12 anode materials for the lithium ion battery were synthesized by using sucrose to improve the electrochemical properties of Li4Ti5O12, and the carbon content was then tested. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the coating of carbon does not influence the formation of Li4Ti5O12. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy confirmed that carbon content exists on the surface of Li4Ti5O12. Electronic conductivity measurement indicated that the electronic conductivity ...

This study investigated sociodemographic and smoking behavioral factors associated with smoking cessation according to follow-up periods. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of transdermal nicotine patches, subjects were a total of 118 adult male smokers, who were followed up for 12 months. Univariable logistic regression analysis and stepwise multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the predictors of smoking cessation. The overall self-reported point ...

Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) is currently the most commonly used wood preservative in Korea. Questions, however, have been raised regarding the potential environmental impacts of metal leaching from CCA-treated wood to soil. Although a number of researchers from other countries have reported that chromium, copper, and arsenic do leach from CCA-treated wood over time, to date few field studies have been performed on those metals in soils adjacent to CCA-treated wood structures in Korea. The present ...

The captive model test of submerged body using CPMC(Computerized Planar Motion Carriage) was carried out at the Ocean Basin of KORDI/MOERI. The target model is a submarine with general hullform. The forces and moments acting on the submerged body were measured by 6-axis waterproof gage. The oblique motion test and turning test were carried out in horizontal and vertical planes of the model. Maneuvering coefficients and derivatives were obtained from the test results. The stability indices in horizontal ...

ABSTRACT This study examined the effect of perceived risk on purchase intention in online airline ticket purchases. Seven types of perceived risk were used to measure customer's perceived risk in online airline ticket purchases. The results revealed that the seven risk dimensions were positively correlated with one another, whereas they were negatively correlated with customer's purchase intention. In addition, the results of multiple regression analysis showed that the six perceived risk dimensions ...

Mechanical testing methods to determine the material constants for large deformation nonlinear finite element analysis were demonstrated for natural rubber. Uniaxial tension, uniaxial compression, equi-biaxial tension and pure shear tests of rubber specimens are performed to achieve the stress-strain curves. The stress-strain curves are obtained after between 5 and 10 cycles to consider the Mullins effect. Mooney and Ogden strain-energy density functions, which are typical form of the hyperelastic ...

Amyloid-β (Aβ) is one of the few neuropathological biomarkers associated with transporters of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Despite the well-characterized clinical indication of decreasing Aβ levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) during the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the link between the alternation of Aβ level in the blood and the progress of the disorder is still controversial. Here, we report a direct correlation of Aβ(1–42) levels between CSF and plasma in AD mouse model. We injected ...

Accumulation of abnormal tau aggregates in neuron is an important pathological signature in multiple neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease. Tau is a neuron specific microtubule-associated protein that regulates microtubule stability, which is critical for axonal outgrowth and synaptic plasticity. In a pathological condition, tau dissociates from microtubules and forms insoluble aggregates called neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). The accumulation of NFTs in neuron directly correlates ...

Severe angulation or shortening can be a surgical indication for fifth metacarpal neck fracture. In a previous meta-analysis, antegrade intramedullary pinning was shown to produce better hand function outcomes than percutaneous transverse pinning or miniplate fixation for treatment of fifth metacarpal neck fractures. However, the outcomes of retrograde intramedullary pinning, to our knowledge, have not been compared with those of antegrade intramedullary pinning. We asked whether the clinical and ...

Nitrification in wastewater treatment emits a significant amount of nitrous oxide (N2O), which is one of the major greenhouse gases. However, the actual mechanism or metabolic pathway is still largely unknown. Selective nitrification inhibitors were used to determine the nitrification steps responsible for N2O emission with activated sludge and enriched nitrifiers. Allylthiourea (86 microM) completely inhibited ammonia oxidation and N2O emission both in activated sludge and enriched nitrifiers. Sodium ...

The primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) of Alloy 600 in a PWR has been reported in the control rod drive mechanism (CRDM), pressurizer instrumentation, and the pressurizer heater sleeves. Recently, two cases of boric acid precipitation that indicated leaking of the primary cooling water were reported on the bottom head surface of steam generators (SG) in Korea. The PWSCC resistance of Ni base alloys which have intergranular carbides is higher than those which have intragranular carbides. ...

Abnormal tau aggregation is a pathological hallmark of many neurodegenerative disorders and it is becoming apparent that soluble tau aggregates play a key role in neurodegeneration and memory impairment. Despite this pathological importance, there is currently no single method that allows monitoring soluble tau species in living cells. In this regard, we developed a cell-based sensor that visualizes tau self-assembly. By introducing bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) technique to tau, ...

To compute the similarity of scientific papers, text-based similarity measures, link-based similarity measures, and hybrid methods can be applied. The text-based and link-based similarity measures take into account only a single aspect of scientific papers, content or citations, respectively. In this paper, we propose ...
