This paper proposes an engineering method to estimate the creep C-integral for realistic creep laws to assess defective components operating at elevated temperatures. The proposed estimation method is mainly for the steady-state C∗-integral, but a suggestion is also given for estimating the transient C(t)-integral. The reference stress approach is the basis of the proposed equation, but an enhancement in terms of accuracy is made through the definition of the reference stress. The proposed estimation ...

Sol-gel-driven ZnGa2O4:Mn2+ phosphors are annealed at various temperatures. As an increase of the annealing temperature of as-grown ZnGa2O4:Mn2+ phosphors, their lattice constants and crystallinities are increased. The resonance signal intensity of Mn2+ ions on Td sites is drastically increased whereas that of Mn2+ ions on Oh sites is decreased as the annealing temperature is increased. The decay curves are well fitted with two simple exponential decay functions indicating the existence of two origins. ...

Nanosized ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ powder is synthesized through hydrothermal method. The average particle size is 20 nm and they are spherical in shape. The excitation band from the charge transfer between Cr3+–O2− shows a blueshift behavior due to quantum confinement effect. X-ray diffraction pattern, Fourier transform-infrared spectrum, and electron paramagnetic resonance signal indicate that nanosized ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ phosphor shows many defect-related energy states and heavy lattice distortion in comparison ...

The ZnGa2O4:Mn2+, Cr3+ phosphors show three colors; the blue band of 380 nm from the charge transfer between Ga–O, the green band of 505 nm from Mn2+ and the red band of 705 nm from Cr3+. As a variation of Mn2+ or Cr3+ concentrations in ZnGa2O4:Mn2+, Cr3+, the relative emission intensity can be tuned. This phenomenon is explained in terms of the energy transfer based on four factors: the spectral overlap between the energy donors (Ga–O) and the energy accepters of Mn2+ or Cr3+, the absorption cross ...

For afternoon colonoscopy, same-day administration of sodium picosulfate, magnesium oxide, and citric acid (PM/Ca) is recommended. However, few studies have evaluated the bowel-cleansing efficacy and safety of this regimen. The aim of this study was to compare the bowel-cleansing efficacy, side effects, and patient's tolerability of a same-day split administration of PM/Ca with polyethylene glycol (PEG) for afternoon colonoscopy. Patients were randomly assigned to a PM/Ca group or a PEG group. The ...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and is characterized by an imbalance between the production and clearance of amyloid-beta (Aβ) and tau proteins. Although vaccination against Aβ peptide results in a dramatic reduction in Aβ pathology in experimental mouse models, the initial clinical trial for an active Aβ vaccine was halted early due to the development of acute meningoencephalitis in 6% of the immunized patients, which likely involved a T-cell mediated pro-inflammatory ...

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common age-related neurodegenerative disease in the elderly and the patients suffer from uncontrolled movement disorders due to loss of dopaminergic (DA) neurons on substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc). We previously reported that transplantation of human fetal midbrain-derived neural precursor cells restored the functional deficits of a 6-hydroxy dopamine (6-OHDA)-treated rodent model of PD but its low viability and ethical issues still remain to be solved. ...

Currently, several antibody (Ab)-based therapies have shown excellent therapeutic effects in the clinic. Nonetheless, Ab penetration into tumor tissues is limited due to abnormal vasculature, tumor interstitial pressure, and excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation, thus demanding novel strategies to overcome these barriers. The intratumoral distribution of therapeutic Abs were detected by fluorescence microscopy or positron emission tomography in both human gastric xenograft and syngeneic ...

In common with the increase in environmental pollution in the past 10 years, there has also been a recent increase in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this regard, we hypothesized that exposure to microplastics is a potential risk factor for ASD. To evaluate the validity of this hypothesis, we initially examined the accumulation of polyethylene (PE) in the brains of mice and then assessed the behavioral effects using mouse models at different life stages, namely, prenatal, post- ...

Glioblastoma, the most common primary brain tumor in adults, is an incurable malignancy with poor short-term survival and is typically treated with radiotherapy along with temozolomide. While the development of tumor-treating fields (TTFields), electric fields with alternating low and intermediate intensity has facilitated glioblastoma treatment, clinical outcomes of TTFields are reportedly inconsistent. However, combinatorial administration of chemotherapy with TTFields has proven effective for ...

Three ruthenium-supported catalyst beads (Ru/Al2O3, Ru/La2O3-Al2O3 and Ru/La2O2CO3-Al2O3) were synthesized and tested for ammonia decomposition. The catalytic activity of the Ru/La2O2CO3-Al2O3 beads was significantly higher than that of the Ru/Al2O3 and Ru/La2O3-Al2O3 beads. This was primarily attributed to the addition of La, which encouraged electron donation from the bead surface to the Ru particles, increasing the rate of N2 desorption. In particular, a higher Ru surface concentration was achieved ...

Nanophosphor of ZnGa2O4:Eu3+ was synthesized through a hydrothermal method. The particle size was about 20 nm confirmed by X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. Excitation peaks attributed to the charge transfer of Eu–O were redshifted to longer wavelength sides. Red emission peaks originating from 5D–7Fj (j=0–6) transitions of Eu3+ were split into two sub-bands, indicating that two different Eu3+ ions exist at tetrahedral Zn2+ and octahedral Ga3+ sites. Relative intensities of two ...

Many surgeons agree that fifth metatarsal stress fractures have a tendency toward delayed union, nonunion, and possibly refracture. Difficulty healing seems to be correlated with fracture classification. However, refracture sometimes occurs after low-grade fracture, even long after apparent resolution. The records of 168 consecutive cases of fifth metatarsal stress fracture (163 patients) treated by modified tension band wiring from March 2002 to June 2011 were evaluated retrospectively. The stiffness of hydrogels has been reported to direct cell fate. Here, we found that the stiffness of hydrogels promotes the reprogramming of mouse embryonic fibroblasts into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). We prepared cell culture substrates of various stiffnesses (0.1, 1, 4, 10, and 20 kPa) using a polyacrylamide hydrogel. We found that culture on a soft hydrogel plays an important role in inducing cellular reprogramming into iPSCs via activation of mesenchymal‐to‐epithelial transition ...
