This paper describes a novel liquid chromatographic method for the quantitation of 2-naphthol in human urine. Urine samples were extracted after enzymatic hydrolysis of glucuronides and sulfates; 2-naphthol was then separated using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The corresponding detection limits were 0.04 ng/ml for the standard sample in acetonitrile and 0.13 ng/ml for urine samples. The level of urinary 2-naphthol in 100 Korean shipyard workers was analyzed using this new ...

In our study, we estimated formaldehyde exposure levels of Korean medical students during their cadaver dissection practice hours. In addition, we examined the prevalence rates of formaldehyde-specific immunoglobulin E or immunoglobulin G antibodies and compared the results with the symptoms the students experienced as a result of formaldehyde exposure. There were 167 Korean medical students (i.e., subjects) aged 23.8+/-2.5 y (mean+/-standard deviation) and a control group of 67 premedical students ...

Expression levels of MUC1 and TLR-2 were evaluated in burning mouth syndrome (BMS) patients and compared with those of controls and oral lichen planus (OLP) patients. The relationships between the expression levels of MUC1 and TLR-2 and levels of salivary pro-inflammatory cytokines were also investigated.Ten female BMS and ten female OLP patients were included. Ten female age-matched volunteers served as controls. RNA was isolated from stimulated whole saliva samples. Real-time PCR was used to quantify ...

The present study examined the effect of the heme oxygenase (HO)-1 inducer hemin on skeletal muscle atrophy induced by single limb immobilization in mice. Immobilization was conducted in the left hindlimb of C57BL/6 mice for 1 week and the right hindlimb was used as a control. Hemin (30 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally once a day during the immobilization period. Gastrocnemius muscles were used for analysis. Muscle weight was measured to quantify degree of atrophy, and exhaustion treadmill ...

The present study examined whether hemin could prevent the development of high-fat diet–induced insulin resistance in the liver and skeletal muscle using a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp. A four-week high-fat feeding to mice increased the body weight, fat mass, and plasma levels of insulin and lipid, which were reduced by hemin. High-fat diet reduced whole body glucose uptake, which were increased by hemin. Insulin-stimulated hepatic glucose production (HGP) was increased by high-fat diet, but ...

The present study examined the effects of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) deficiency on skeletal muscle atrophy in single leg-immobilized iNOS knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) mice. The left leg was immobilized for 1 wk, and the right leg was used as the control. Muscle weight and contraction-stimulated glucose uptake were reduced by immobilization in WT mice, which was accompanied with increased iNOS expression in skeletal muscle. Deficiency of iNOS attenuated muscle weight loss and the reduction ...

Leptin is a pleiotropic hormone that regulates food intake and metabolic and endocrine functions. Serum leptin levels have been reported to be increased in patients with allergic rhinitis and nasal polyposis; however, the explanation for this is unclear. We aimed to demonstrate the differential expression of leptin receptors in normal human nasal mucosa and nasal polyps, and to elucidate the effects of leptin on mucin gene expression in human nasal polyp epithelial cells.Case-control and in vitro ...

Age at menarche is known to be regulated by genetic and environmental factors. To date, no menarcheal data are available on North Korean women. In this cross-sectional survey, we investigated age at menarche and its possible influencing factors in North Korean refugees.Four hundred and eleven North Korean refugees were surveyed at a North Korean female refugee camp using a structured questionnaire within 3 months of immigration. Menarcheal age was requested and the data obtained were analysed with ...

Abstract Although several studies reported genetic polymorphisms in protein kinase AMP ‐activated alpha 1 catalytic subunit ( PRKAA 1 ) and their associations with gastric cancer risk, few have evaluated associations between Helicobacter pylori infection and PRKAA 1 gene‐environment interactions. Here, we evaluated the effects of interactions between H. pylori infection and PRKAA 1 polymorphisms on gastric cancer risk in Koreans. In this hospital‐based case–control study, PRKAA 1 genotypes were analyzed ...

Since type I allergy caused by specific IgE antibodies may play principal roles and IgG antibody-mediated reactions have been thought to be involved in some parts of the pathogenesis, this study was performed to investigate the role of IgE- or IgG-mediated hypersensitivity reactions in development of toluene diisocyanate (TDI) asthma in Korean workers. For 81 TDI spray painters, self-administrative questionnaires and direct interviews on respiratory symptoms, chest auscultation, and measurements ...

While the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in healthy people does not differ significantly among age groups, those aged 65 years or older exhibit strikingly higher COVID-19 mortality compared to younger individuals. To further understand differing COVID-19 manifestations in patients of different ages, three age groups of ferrets are infected with SARS-CoV-2. Although SARS-CoV-2 is isolated from all ferrets regardless of age, aged ferrets (≥3 years old) show higher viral loads, longer nasal virus shedding, ...

Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a well-known serine/threonine kinase that has been implicated in modulation of glucose and fatty acid metabolism. Recent reports have also implicated AMPK in modulation of mucin secretion. In this study, the effects and signaling pathways of AMPK on MUC5B expression were investigated in human NCI-H292 airway epithelial cells. Metformin, as an activator of AMPK, induced MUC5B expression in a dose-dependent manner. Compound C, as an inhibitor ...

The biologic actions of insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1) are associated with cell growth, differentiation, migration, and survival. IGF-1 constitutes the pathogenic factor in formation of nasal polyps and the regulatory factor in expression of mucins. However, the effect of IGF-1 on MUC8 and MUC5B expression has not been reported. Therefore, in this study, the effect and brief signaling pathway of IGF-1 on MUC8 and MUC5B expression were investigated in human airway epithelial cells. In mucin- ...

Leptin, an adipocyte-secreted hormone that regulates food intake and metabolic response, has been recently reported to increase in the serum during inflammatory airway disease associated with mucus-hypersecretion. We investigated the effects of leptin on mucin expression in human airway epithelial cells and the signaling pathways. The expression of the leptin receptor was evaluated in human nasal mucosa and NCI-H292 cells. Leptin-induced expression of major respiratory mucins in NCI-H292 cells was ...

The mechanism of the adverse health effects of ambient particulate matter on humans has not been well-investigated despite many epidemiologic association studies. Measurement of personal exposure to particulate pollutants and relevant biological effect markers are necessary in order to investigate the mechanism of adverse health effects, particularly in fragile populations considered to be more susceptible to the effects of pollutants. We measured personal exposure to PM(2.5) and examined oxidative ...

Omicron has become the globally dominant severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variant, creating additional challenges due to its ability to evade neutralization. Here, we report that neutralizing antibodies against Omicron variants are undetected following COVID-19 infection with ancestral or past SARS-CoV-2 variant viruses or after two-dose mRNA vaccination. Compared with two-dose vaccination, a three-dose vaccination course induces broad neutralizing antibody responses with ...
