Objective: To determine the correlation of biochemical markers with the degree of cartilage degradation. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, synovial fluid samples were obtained from 65 patients with cartilage lesions of the knee joint. The measured biochemical markers included MMP-1, MMP-3, and MMP-13, the tissue inhibitor of MMPs (TIMP-1), COMP, YKL-40, and tenascin. The marker levels were compared with the Outerbridge and the Noyes classification. Results: For the majority of markers, the correlation ...

The origin of the Bonaduz gravel (Switzerland) in the vicinity of the large Holocene Flims rock slide deposits has been discussed for a century. The internal structure shows many features that imply transport as an over-sized mud/debris stream. This flow of gravel, sand and fines must have been triggered by the mobilisation of the valley alluvium by the impact of the rock slide. The mobilised mud with a volume of several 100 million m3 must have had enormous transport capacities as large units of ...

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels are relatively new engineered wood products that can be used as load bearing walls, floors and roof elements in innovative and high quality modern timber structures. The fire behavior of cross-laminated timber panels requires careful evaluation to allow the expansion of CLT elements usage in buildings. A University of British Columbia study has been conducted at the Trees and Timber Institute CNR-IVALSA in San Michele all’Adige, Italy to experimentally evaluate ...

In the face of rising demand for private schooling in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar, a lack of affordable schooling options, monopolistic behavior of private education providers, and unpredictable government regulations have created a complex and unequal education sector. This research employs a mixed methods comparative approach to explore the ways in which private education providers navigate the regulatory schooling environments and assess the impact on education stakeholders in the ...

Objective Compared to older Caucasians, older African Americans have higher risks of developing Alzheimer disease (AD) and lower cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tau biomarker levels. It is not known whether tau‐related differences begin earlier in life or whether race modifies other AD‐related biomarkers such as inflammatory proteins. Methods We performed multiplex cytokine analysis in a healthy middle‐aged cohort with family history of AD (n = 68) and an older cohort (n = 125) with normal cognition (NC), mild ...

The rate of AD for African Americans (AAs) is 64% higher than for non-Hispanic White Americans (Whites). It is hypothesized that poor peripheral vascular function, in combination with genetics, stress, and inflammation may directly contribute to the accumulation of AD pathologic biomarkers. These risk factors may disproportionately affect AAs.

Summary Fifth grade students were administered a reading passage followed by a multiple-choice test based upon that passage. Feedback regarding performance was provided according to a standardized procedure either immediately after the test or with a delay of two and one-half hours. In the two delayed feedback treatments students participated in activities interpolated between the multiple-choice test and feedback which were either similar or dissimilar to the initial reading activity. In all treatments ...

An increasing number of terrestrial and marine proxy records for temperature, hydrology, and oceanic circulation over the past millennium are becoming available, providing a reference frame for the assessment of current and future climate change. The spatial and temporal resolution of these proxies, however, is still limited, hindering the analysis of dynamical processes of regional to global climate changes. These processes can be simulated and interpreted using coupled climate models, which can ...

The harmonic force fields of the title compounds have been calculated at the ab initio SCF level using effective core potentials and polarized double-zeta basis sets. After scaling, the theoretical wavenumbers are in good agreement with experiment both for the parent compounds and the perdeuterated isotopomers, and the 12C→13C shifts are well reproduced. Constraining all but three off-diagonal force constants to their ab initio values in a least squares refinement, semi-empirical harmonic force ...

Then a retention test was administered to each group three days alter feedback. Results demonstrated that students who received feedback with a delay ...

It was the aim of the following study to determine the feasibility of the recanalization of long occlusions in iliac arteries and to establish its patency rate.We retrospectively evaluated the data of 23 patients (15 male and 8 female) with occlusions of the iliac arteries with a mean length of 12 cm (range: 9-15 cm). The occlusions were situated either in the common iliac artery (CIA) (n = 3), in the external iliac artery (EIA) (n = 12) or in both CIA and EIA (n = 7). In one patient three vessels, the common ...

Although orthotopic reconstruction has become the preferred form of lower urinary tract reconstruction after cystectomy there remains a select group of patients who are not appropriate for an orthotopic neobladder substitute. A continent cutaneous reservoir provides an alternative means to store urine and protect the upper urinary tract without the need for a urostomy appliance. We report our surgical technique of a continent cutaneous right colon reservoir using a catheterizable submucosally embedded ...
