Possible origins of lake water, salts dissolved in water of a saline lake, Lake Vanda, those contained in cored sediments of the lake and those distributed on the ground surface in the adjacent area were investigated on the basis of the stable isotope compositions, 13C/12C, 18O/16O and 34S/32S. The lake water is concluded to be neither marine nor volcanic in origin but surface fresh water such as glacial melt water, because of the low δ18O values ranging from -30.3 to -31.9‰. On the other hand, sulfate ...

Under hydrothermal conditions sulfuric acid, sodium bisulfate and sodium sulfate solutions were reduced by dextrose to hydrogen sulfide in order to clarify the origin of sulfide species in hot-springs, geothermal water and ore-forming fluids. At temperatures above 250°C, reduction of sulfuric acid and at above 300°C of sodium bisulfate and sodium sulfate was observed. The reduction rate depends fairly well on the temperatures, pH and sulfate species. The reduction of sulfate seems to be a first- ...

Sulfur isotope fractionation in ZnS-HS- and PbS-HS- systems has been studied experimentally in the temperature range from 50 to 340°C. Sulfur isotopic exchange between sulfide minerals and HS- ions was found to be unexpectedly fast. In the ZnS-HS- system several ten hours are enough to attain isotopic equilibrium in the temperature range from 50 to 200°C. Temperature dependence of equilibrium fractionation was estimated as follows: In αsphalerite-HS-= 111T-2 + 0.00136 In αgalena-HS-=-782 T-2 + 0.00170 ...

D/H ratios of volcanic condensates, hydrogen and methane collected from Hachimantai, Zao¯, Azuma, Nasu and Kusatsu shirane volcanic areas in northeastern Japan were determined together with chemical components. On the basis of the isotopic ratios for volcanic condensates, it is concluded that most of the water vapor is essentially local surface water which has been heated and slightly enriched in18O by exchange with silicates. δD values of hydrogen and methane range from −220 to −515‰ (SMOW) and from − ...

Acid sulfate-chloride thermal water samples collected together with fumarolic gases from various volcanic areas in northeastern Japan were studied chemically and isotogdically. δ34S (COT) values of sulfate and hydrogen sulfide from these volcanic hot springs range from +4.0 to +31 and from −15.0 to −2.0% respectively, with δ34Sys value of +2.5 to +31. The δ34S of the sulfate in the more saline waters tends to become smaller with increasing ratio of SO4 to Cl, although the chemical and isotopic composition ...

Relative enrichments of 13C in light hydrocarbon gases imply that they have served as thermochemical sulfate reducing agents during the production of H2S in some deep Paleozoic carbonate reservoirs of western Canada. This hypothesis was tested with laboratory measurements of carbon isotope selectivity during oxidation of light hydrocarbons. Although some experiments were carried out with sulfate as the oxidant, the accompanying slow reaction rates prompted the use of metal oxides. In flow and sealed ...

Abiogenic reduction of sulfate by acetic acid has been conducted at temperatures ranging from 241 to 340°C. The sulfides produced and the remaining sulfates have been chemically and isotopically quantified. The reaction of the aqueous sulfate reduction obey first-order kinetics. The rate constants are strongly dependent on temperature. The temperature dependence of the reaction rate (min-1) is given by the following rate law: log k=-10.3×103/T+15.1. The activation energy for the reaction of sulfate ...

Fumarolic and geothermal well gases from several volcanic areas in Northeastern Japan have been examined for the N2/Ar and He/Ar ratios. The N2/Ar and He/Ar ratios of the gas samples are 40 to 2, 000 and 10-3 to 1, respectively, higher than those of the atmospheric air dissolved in groundwaters. The N2/Ar ratio becomes larger with increasing ratio of He to Ar. The data also show that nitrogen and helium in gases increase with increasing contribution of magmatic gas to the discharges and with decreasing ...

A variant P388 murine leukemic cell resistant to 4′-demethylepipodophyllotoxin-9-(4,6-O-ethylidine)-β-d-glucopyranoside (etoposide) (VP-16-213) was cloned. The variant P388/VP-16 cell line was 159-fold resistant to VP-16. We found that this variant P388/VP-16 cell line showed collateral drug sensitivity to 1-β-d-arabinofuranosylcytosine(Ara-C), determined by comparing the 50% inhibitory concentrations in 48-h growth inhibition assay. To clarify the mechanism of this increased sensitivity to Ara-C, ...

The oxidation of methane during flow over CuO and Fe2O3 has been examined in the temperature range of 400–650°C. The reaction rate and carbon isotope fractionation are dependent upon the choice of oxide and temperature. The activation energy is lower for hematite (8.0 kcal mole−1) than for cupric oxide (16.6 kcal mole−1). The measured ratios of the isotopic rate constants α =k12/k13 were found to have temperature dependences given by: 103(α − 1) =2.93 × 106/T2 + 8.11 (cupric oxide) 103(α − 1) =7.44 × 106/T2 + 6.56 ( ...

Various substituted nitroaromatics were successfully hydrogenated to the corresponding N-aryl hydroxylamines in excellent yields (up to 99%) using supported platinum catalysts such as Pt/SiO2 under a hydrogen atmosphere (1 bar) at room temperature. The key to the fast and highly selective formation of hydroxylamines is the addition of small amounts of amines such as triethylamine and dimethyl sulfoxide; amines promote the conversion of nitroaromatics, while dimethyl sulfoxide inhibits further hydrogenation ...

Light hydrocarbon and isotope compositions of methane were analyzed in well steam samples from the Matsukawa vapour-dominated type geothermal system. Alkanes (C1-C4) and alkene (C2) were detected in all samples. Light hydrocarbon contents of CO2-type steam are slightly higher than those of CO2-H2S-type steam. The isotope composition of methane and the relationship between methane/ethane ratio and δ13C-value of methane suggest that these light hydrocarbon gases are mixtures of thermogenic and abiogenic ...

The estimation of incidence rates of infectious diseases based on the sentinel surveillance data is rather rare. We attempted to estimate these in 2000 in Japan by the surveillance data, and to evaluate their biases. We used the incidences of influenza-like illness and 12 pediatric diseases in each of the sentinel medical institutions in Japan based on surveillance data in 2000. The incidence in all medical institutions was estimated under the assumption that the sentinel medical institutions were ...

Japanese encephalitis (JE) surveillance has been conducted since 1965 as a part of the National Epidemiological Surveillance of Vaccine Preventable Diseases in Japan. Over 1,000 JE cases were reported annually in the late 1960s. The number of JE cases has since markedly decreased, with less than 10 cases reported annually from 1992 to 2004. A total of 361 JE cases were reported between 1982 and 2004. Prognosis was available for 320 cases; 58 (18%) died, 160 (50%) recovered with neuropsychiatric sequelae, ...

Long bone abnormality (lbab/lbab) is a spontaneous mutant mouse characterized by dwarfism with shorter long bones. A missense mutation was reported in the Nppc gene, which encodes C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), but it has not been confirmed whether this mutation is responsible for the dwarf phenotype. To verify that the mutation causes the dwarfism of lbab/lbab mice, we first investigated the effect of CNP in lbab/lbab mice. By transgenic rescue with chondrocyte-specific expression of CNP, the ...

Background Seasonality characterizing influenza epidemics suggests susceptibility to climate variation. El Niño southern oscillation (ENSO), which involves two extreme events, El Niño and La Niña, is well‐known for its large effects on inter‐annual climate variability. The influence of ENSO on several diseases has been described. Objectives In this study, we attempt to analyze the possible influence of ENSO on the timing of the annual influenza activity peak using influenza‐like illness report data ...

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is one of the causative agents of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) and is known to cause encephalitis, but several reports have identified EV71 in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). We detected EV71 in CSF from a 20-month-old infant. The patient was diagnosed with brainstem encephalitis associated with HFMD. The clinical features of the patient were high fever (39.1℃) and myoclonic jerks, and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a bright signal area around the 4th ventricle. ...
