William Chen, R. C. Vaughan,

published five papers in Mathematika during his distinguished career, including three of his most influential. The 1955 paper "Rational approximations to algebraic numbers" was his legendary solution of the famous Siegel conjecture concerning approximation of algebraic numbers by rationals, for which he was awarded the Fields Medal in 1958.The 1965 paper "On the large sieves of Linnik and Rényi" was a huge breakthrough and, together with the almost contemporaneous paper of Bombieri also published in ...

Abstract Cervimycins A–D are novel polyketide glycosides with significant activity against multi‐drug‐resistant staphylococci and vancomycin‐resistant enterococci. They are produced by a strain of Streptomyces tendae , isolated from an ancient cave. The structures of the cervimycins were determined by performing extensive NMR and chemical degradation studies. All cervimycins have a common tetracyclic polyketide core that is substituted with unusual di‐ and tetrasaccharide chains, composed exclusively ...

We report theoretical values for the unscreened plasma frequencies Omega_p of several Fe pnictides obtained from DFT based calculations within the LDA and compare them with experimental plasma frequencies obtained from reflectivity data. The sizable renormalization observed for all considered compounds points to the presence of many-body effects beyond the LDA. From the large empirical background dielectric constant of about 12-15, we estimate a large arsenic polarizability of about 9.5 +- 1.2 Angstroem^ ...

Progress in the development of plasmon-enabled light-harvesting technologies requires a better understanding of their fundamental operating principles and current limitations. Here, we employ picosecond time-resolved X-ray photoemission spectroscopy to investigate photoinduced electron transfer in a plasmonic model system composed of 20 nm sized gold nanoparticles (NPs) attached to a nanoporous film of TiO2. The measurement provides direct, quantitative access to transient local charge distributions ...

Dielectric measurements covering the frequency range from dc to the far infrared are reported for iodine- and As${\mathrm{F}}_{5}$-doped cis- and trans-polyacetylene, partly on the same batch of samples. The dispersion of the conductivity in the mm and sub-mm region suggests a superposition of a Drude free-carrier and a phonon-assisted hopping mechanism. In the sub-mm range the onset of an additional temperature-dependent absorption is found which does not freeze out completely at low temperatures. ...

Objectives: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation represents a valuable and rapidly evolving therapeutic option in patients with severe heart or lung failure following cardiovascular surgery. However, survival remains poor and accurate risk stratification challenging. Therefore, we evaluated the predictive value of urinary output within 24 hours after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation initiation on mortality in patients undergoing venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support following ...

Already three decades ago, the potential of medical 3D printing (3DP) or rapid prototyping for improved patient treatment began to be recognized. Since then, more and more medical indications in different surgical disciplines have been improved by using this new technique. Numerous examples have demonstrated the enormous benefit of 3DP in the medical care of patients by, for example, planning complex surgical interventions preoperatively, reducing implantation steps and anesthesia times, and helping ...

We used angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory calculations to study the electronic structure of Ba(Fe 1-x-y CoxMny)2As2 for x=0.06 and 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.07.From ARPES we derive that the substitution of Fe by Mn does not lead to hole doping, indicating a localization of the induced holes. An evaluation of the measured spectral function does not indicate a diverging effective mass or scattering rate near optimal doping. Thus the present ARPES results indicate a continuous ...

Abstract Background Secondary lymphoedema is a challenging pandemic. This condition may arise after oncologic resection of tumor-draining lymph nodes and/or radiation. Plastic-surgical procedures for lymphoedema comprise transplantation of vascularized lymph node flaps, which are, however, technically challenging and difficult to implement on a global level due to the scarcity of microsurgery facilities in some countries. To improve this situation, comparative research in valid animal models is ...

The mortality rate in sepsis reemains high despite many therapeutic efforts. Initial treatment of sepsis, in addition to surgical treatment of the underlying cause, is aimed to prevent circulatory shock leading to multiple organ failure, including liver failure. Therefore, vasopressor agents such as norepinephrine (NE) are frequently administered to restore vascular tone and improve tissue perfusion (Vincent et al., 1991).

Abstract Background Primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) is characterised by gradual worsening of disability from symptom onset. Knowledge about the natural course of PPMS remains limited. Methods PPMS patients from the German NeuroTransData (NTD) MS registry with data from 56 outpatient practices were employed for retrospective cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. The cross-sectional analysis included a contemporary PPMS cohort with a documented visit within the last 2 years before ...
