Aging is a significant risk factor for the development of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ). Accumulating evidence suggests that bone aging is associated with oxidative stress (OS), and OS is associated with osteonecrosis. To elucidate the mechanisms of the onset of BRONJ, the present study focused on OS and the effects of treatment with the pro-oxidant DL-buthionine-(S,R)-sulfoximine (BSO), an oxidative stressor, on healing of a surgically induced penetrating injury of the palate. ...

The role of myrosinase (β-thioglucoside glucohydrolase, EC 3.2.3.1) in the phototropic response in radish hypocotyls was investigated. Unilateral illumination with blue light abruptly up-regulated the activity of myrosinase, which releases bioactive 4-methylthio-3-butenyl isothiocyanate (MTBI) from inactive 4-methylthio-3-butenyl glucosinolate (MTBG), in the illuminated halves of radish hypocotyls 10 min after onset of phototropic stimulation, peaking after 30 min and decreasing thereafter. The myrosinase ...

Sequence‐dependent DNA conformations of matrix attachment regions (MARs) available in a database were calculated using the wedge model, and compared with randomly chosen genes, promoters, enhancers and transposons. The MARs had a longer bent part and higher angle/helical turn than the other regions. It is known that some MAR sequences have A‐tracts that cause DNA bending, and we also found many A‐tracts in examined MARs. Furthermore, non‐random and clustered distribution of A‐tracts shown here gave ...

An efficient algorithm is proposed for finding all solutions of piecewise-linear (PWL) resistive circuits using linear programming (LP). This algorithm is based on a simple test (termed the LP test) for nonexistence of a solution to a system of PWL equations in a given region. In the LP test, the system of PWL equations is transformed into an LP problem, to which the simplex method is applied. Such an LP problem is obtained by surrounding the PWL functions by rectangles. It is shown that the LP test ...

Abstract Both trans and cis isomers of azobenzene‐linked bis‐terpyridine ligand L1 were incorporated in rigid macrocycles linked by Fe II (tpy) 2 (tpy: terpyridine) units. The complex of the longer trans ‐ L1 is dinuclear [( trans ‐ L1 ) 2 ⋅ Fe II 2 ], whereas the complex of the shorter cis ‐ L1 is mononuclear [ cis ‐ L1⋅ Fe II ]. The complex cis ‐ L1⋅ Fe II was not only thermally stable but also photochemically inactive. These results indicate a perfectly locked state of cis ‐azobenzene. The stable macrocyclic structure of ...

DNA microarray-based transcriptome analysis with human hepatoma HepG2 cells was applied to evaluate the impacts of whole wastewater effluents from the membrane bioreactors (MBRs) and the activated sludge process (AS). In addition, the conventional bioassays (i.e., cytotoxicity tests and bioluminescence inhibition test), which were well-established for the evaluation of the overall effluent toxicity, were also performed for the same samples. Transcriptome analysis revealed that 2 to 926 genes, which ...

Abstract Bladder cancer is often associated with recurrence and progression to invasive metastatic disease that have palliative therapeutic options. The use of traditional chemotherapeutic agents for bladder cancer management often suffers from toxicity and resistance concerns. This emphasizes the need for development of safer, natural, nontoxic compounds as chemotherapeutic/chemopreventive agents. Curcumin (diferuloylmethane) is a natural compound that has been known to possess anticancer properties ...

We have constructed an extremely precise optical system for hard-x-ray nanofocusing in a synchrotron radiation beamline. Precision multilayer mirrors were fabricated, tested, and employed as Kirkpatrick–Baez mirrors with a novel phase error compensator. In the phase compensator, an at-wavelength wavefront error sensing method based on x-ray interferometry and an in situ phase compensator mirror, which adaptively deforms with nanometer precision, were developed to satisfy the Rayleigh criterion to ...

Abstract The Src family of protein kinases (SFK) plays key roles in regulating fundamental cellular processes, including cell growth, differentiation, cell shape, migration, and survival, and specialized cell signals in various malignancies. The pleiotropic functions of SFKs in cancer make them promising targets for intervention. Here, we sought to investigate the role of microRNA-205 (miR-205) in inhibition of Src-mediated oncogenic pathways in renal cancer. We report that expression of miR-205 was ...

The minichromosome maintenance (MCM) gene family is essential for DNA replication and is frequently upregulated in various cancers. Here, we examined the role of MCM2 in prostate cancer and the effect of microRNA-1296 (miR-1296), genistein, and trichostatin A (TSA) on the MCM complex. Profiling results showed that expression of MCM genes was higher in tumor samples. Genistein and TSA significantly downregulated the expression of all MCM genes. Genistein, TSA, and small interfering RNA duplexes caused ...

Wnt/beta-catenin signaling is involved in renal cancer. DKK2, a Wnt antagonist, is silenced in some cancers, although its function has not been investigated. We hypothesized that DKK2 may be epigenetically silenced and inhibits progression of renal cell carcinoma (RCC).RCC cell lines and a normal kidney cell line were used for methylation and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays. To assess various functions of DKK2, we established stable DKK2-transfected cells and examined them with regard to cell ...

A 36-year-old man had a high titer of antibody to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and recurrent necrotizing papules and nodules on his face and oral mucosa. The disease was diagnosed as CD3+4− 8+ large granular lymphocyte leukemia of T-cell origin. Southern blot analysis demonstrated that EBV DNA was present in CD8+ lymphocytes; EBV antigens were also observed in these lymphocytes. These findings demonstrated that EBV latently infected the leukemic cells and may have played a role in the pathogenesis of ...

Abstract The structures of raphanusanins A and B, growth inhibitors involved in phototropism of radish hypocotyls, were determined by X-ray crystallographic structure analysis and by spectral studies to be (3R*,6R*)- and (3R*,6S*)-3-[methoxy(methylthio)methyl]-2-pyrrolidinethione, respectively. Therefore, the previously proposed structure of these compounds of 2-piperidinethione skeleton should be revised.
