The sinking of the Solar 1 tanker caused serious heavy oil pollution around Guimaras Island, Philippines. In the present study, variations of parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and alkylated PAHs (alkPAHs) in some shellfish were investigated around Guimaras Island and other small islands from 3 months to 5 years after the spill. The total PAHs and alkPAHs in shellfish were detected in high concentrations at 448 and 33,666 ng/g dry weight, respectively, in November 2006. The concentrations ...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the metabolic profile of cattle fed with or without zearalenone (ZEN) and sterigmatocystin (STC)-contaminated diets using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry metabolomics approach. Urinary samples were collected from individual animals (n = 6 per herd) from fattening female Japanese Black (JB) cattle herds (23 months old, 550-600 kg). Herd 1 had persistently high urinary ZEN and STC concentrations due to the presence of contaminated rice straw. Herd 2, the ...

We investigated the effects of in vivo exposure to low zearalenone levels on the anti-Müllerian hormone endocrine levels and the reproductive performance of cattle. Urine and blood samples and reproductive records were collected from two Japanese Black breeding female cattle herds with dietary zearalenone contamination below the threshold levels (<1 ppm) at 30 days after calving. Urinary zearalenone, α-zearalenol and β-zearalenol concentrations were measured by chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, ...

ABSTRACT This study investigated the effects of waterborne chlorpyrifos with concentrations of 1 and 100 µg/L for L and H‐groups, respectively, on metabolome profiles of carp plasma using 1 H‐NMR. Principal component analysis suggests that chlorpyrifos exposure firstly affected in L and H‐groups on day 2 or 4, and followed a second effect in both exposure groups on day 14. Levels of metabolites related to the energy production in the body, such as glucose, glycerol, valine, leucine, isoleucine, ...

Abstract Heavy oil (HO) pollution is one of the most important environmental issues globally. However, little is known about the immunotoxicity of HO in fish. We therefore investigated the effects of HO exposure on immunocompetence and expression of immune‐related genes in Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus . To test immunocompetency, serum collected from the fish was mixed with Edwardsiella tarda , plated, and the resultant numbers of bacterial colonies were counted. Plates with serum from HO‐ ...

The present study was conducted to 1) identify the natural source of feed contamination by zearalenone (ZEN), which was suspected to have caused persistently increased urinary ZEN concentrations in one of our experimental cattle herds, and 2) evaluate the effects of intervention against this source of contamination. As an experimental model, a fattening Japanese Black cattle herd showing persistently increased urinary ZEN concentrations was identified. Urinary ZEN concentrations of cows fed with ...

Common carp, Cyprinus carpio, was exposed to 1% and 5% dietary heavy oil for 2 weeks. Higher polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) accumulation induced higher hepatic EROD activity in exposure groups compared with the control group. Significant histological alternations were observed in the liver such as nuclear and cellular hypertrophy, accumulation of eosinophilic granules in cytoplasm, nuclear degeneration and fibrillar inclusion in cytoplasm. Severe damage of the kidney was indicated by nuclear and ...

This paper reports for the first time the detection and occurrence of nitroarenes (NPAHs) in marine organisms. Mussels and oysters collected from Osaka Bay, Japan, had total NPAHs concentrations that ranged from 2380 to 24,688 pg/g dry and 2672 to 25,961 pg/g dry, respectively. Relatively higher concentrations were detected in sampling sites located near the central district and suburbs of Osaka City implying that the most probable sources of NPAHs in the two bivalves are exhaust gases and smokes ...

The aims of the present study were to investigate the efficacy of measuring bovine urinary zearalenone (ZEN) concentrations by using a commercially available ELISA method in cattle kept under different feeding conditions to monitor the natural contamination of feeds at the farm level, and to investigate the effects of supplementation of a mycotoxin adsorbent (MA) product in the feed based on urinary ZEN concentration. First, Japanese Black cattle herds kept for breeding (4 herds) and fattening (4 herds) ...

Abstract Using a 1 H NMR metabolomics approach, the effects of dietary exposure of bunker A heavy oil (0.01, 0.1, 1, and 5% in diet) on freshwater carp, Cyprinus carpio , were examined. Statistical analysis by PCA score plots showed that the amount of metabolites in exposure groups 0.1, 1, and 5% differed from those in the control group. Although no discernible effects on metabolites were noted in the 0.1% exposure group as well as in the lowest concentration (0.01%) group, several metabolites such ...

Zearalenone (ZEN) and its metabolites are important nonsteroidal estrogenic mycotoxins that cause reproductive disorders in domestic animals, especially pigs. We aimed to simultaneously detect ZEN and its metabolites á-zearalenol (α-ZOL) and β-zearalenol (β-ZOL) in porcine follicular fluid (FF) by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. ZEN and α-ZOL, but not β-ZOL, were detected in all pooled FF samples collected from coexisting follicles (diameter ≥ 6 mm) within 10 ovaries. Furthermore, ZEN and ...

Zearalenone (Zen) and its metabolites are estrogenic and may be important factors involved in reproductive disorders in domestic animals. We aimed to (1) simultaneously detect Zen and its metabolites in bovine follicular fluids (FFs) by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry and (2) examine the in vitro effects of Zen on bovine oocytes. Zen and its metabolites were detected in 6 of 32 normal follicles and 7 of 20 cystic follicles. Bovine oocytes were cultured in a maturation media containing ...

This study investigated the effect of glutamine administration and mitomycin C treatment on protein turnover in tumor-bearing rats. AH109A rat ascites hepatoma cells (2 × 106) were subcutaneously implanted in the back of male Donryu rats (n = 32, body weight 150-200 g) on Day 0. The distributions of 15 nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) in sediments collected at 44 sites throughout Osaka Bay, Japan were examined. The highest total NPAHs, with a concentration of 1949ng/kg dry weight, were detected near the city of Amagasaki. Some sites near the cities of Osaka, Kishiwada, sand Sakai registered ng/kg levels of NPAHs, but individual NPAH concentrations were relatively lower than those in previous studies. The sources were estimated using principal component analysis, ...
