We investigate experimentally and numerically the effect of wettability on viscous-liquid impregnation into a single layer of woven fibers confined between the parallel plates. In our experiments, special attention is paid to the flow-front behaviors and the characteristic flow fields induced by the pressure difference attempted to the mold. We change the wettability between the fiber and viscous fluid by coating the bundles with fluorine-based coating agent. Correlation between the flow-front behaviors ...

Propolis is a resinous mixture produced by honey bees that contains cinnamic acid derivatives and flavonoids. Although propolis has been reported to inhibit mast cell functions and mast cell-dependent allergic responses, the effect of propolis on basophil biology remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effect of propolis on FcεRI-mediated basophil activation. To determine the inhibitory effect of propolis on basophil activation in vitro, cytokine production and FcεRI signal ...

Breath sound parameters have been suggested as biomarkers of the airway narrowing in children. Using a commercially available breath sound analyzer, the characteristics of the airway condition were investigated in infants with the risk factors for asthma development.A total of 443 infants (mean age, 9.9 months; range, 3-24 months) were included in the present study. The breath sound parameters of the frequency limiting 99% of the power spectrum (F99), the roll-off from 600 to 1200 Hz (Slope) and spectrum ...

Ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-secreting neuroendocrine tumors are rare diseases. Patients with ACTH-secreting pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinomas have a poor prognosis. Infections and coagulopathies have been reported as the cause of death. However, detailed clinical descriptions of the morbid complications of ACTH-secreting neuroendocrine carcinomas have not been reported.A 78-year-old Japanese woman consulted a medical center due to systemic edema and epigastric discomfort. An ultrahigh-speed 8-b multiplexer (MUX) and demultiplexer (DMUX) chip set has been developed for the synchronous optical network (SONET) next-generation optical-fiber communication systems, which will require data bit rates of about 10 Gb/s. These ICs were designed using three novel concepts: a tree-type architecture giving reliable operation, a dynamic divider with a wide operating range, and a 50- Omega on-chip transmission line with high-speed pulse propagation. They were fabricated using a 0.5- ...

Bone metastasis occurs frequently in cancer patients. Conventional therapies have limited therapeutic outcomes, and thus, exploring the mechanisms of cancer progression in bone metastasis is important to develop new effective therapies. In the bone microenvironment, adipocytes are the major stromal cells that interact with cancer cells during bone metastasis. However, the comprehensive functions of bone marrow adipocytes in cancer progression are not yet fully understood. To address this, we investigated ...

In the tumor microenvironment, senescent non-malignant cells, including cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), exhibit a secretory profile under stress conditions; this senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) leads to cancer progression and chemoresistance. However, the role of senescent CAFs in metastatic lesions and the molecular mechanism of inflammation-related SASP induction are not well understood. We show that pro-inflammatory cytokine-driven EZH2 downregulation maintains the SASP by ...

Cancer cells craftily adapt their energy metabolism to their microenvironment. Nutrient deprivation due to hypovascularity and fibrosis is a major characteristic of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC); thus, PDAC cells must produce energy intrinsically. However, the enhancement of energy production via activating Kras mutations is insufficient to explain the metabolic rewiring of PDAC cells. Here, we investigated the molecular mechanism underlying the metabolic shift in PDAC cells under serine ...

Abstract The absence of highly specific markers for malignant mesothelioma (MM) has served an obstacle for its diagnosis and development of molecular-targeting therapy against MM. Here, we show that a novel mucin-like membrane protein, sialylated protein HEG homolog 1 (HEG1), is a highly specific marker for MM. A monoclonal antibody against sialylated HEG1, SKM9-2, can detect even sarcomatoid and desmoplastic MM. The specificity and sensitivity of SKM9-2 to MM reached 99% and 92%, respectively; this ...

The arachidonic acid cascade is a major inflammatory pathway that produces prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Although inhibition of 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH) is reported to lead to PGE2 accumulation, the role of 15-PGDH expression in the tumor microenvironment remains unclear. We utilized Panc02 murine pancreatic cancer cells for orthotopic transplantation into wild-type and 15-pgdh+/- mice and found that 15-pgdh depletion in the tumor microenvironment leads to enhanced tumorigenesis ...

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a fatal tumor. It is often hard to discriminate MPM from metastatic tumors of other types because currently, there are no reliable immunopathological markers for MPM. MPM is differentially diagnosed by some immunohistochemical tests on pathology specimens. In the present study, we investigated the expression of intelectin-1, a new mesothelioma marker, in normal tissues in the whole body and in many cancers, including MPM, by immunohistochemical analysis. We ...

The genetic make-up of an individual contributes to the susceptibility and response to viral infection. Although environmental, clinical and social factors have a role in the chance of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and the severity of COVID-191,2, host genetics may also be important. Identifying host-specific genetic factors may reveal biological mechanisms of therapeutic relevance and clarify causal relationships of modifiable environmental risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection and outcomes. Abstract Background: Novel agents capable of inducing deeper responses dramatically improve the prognosis of patients with multiple myeloma (MM). Innovative technologies such as multiparameter flow cytometry (MFC) and next-generation sequencing (NGS) are utilized to assess minimal residual disease (MRD) for further stratification of patients who achieve a complete response (CR). EuroFlow-next-generation flow (EuroFlow-NGF) is one of the gold standard MFC methods. Recently, both NGF and NGS have been used ...

Bladder cancer is the most common urinary tract cancer. Patients diagnosed with advanced T-stage/muscle-invasive bladder cancer through transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) are treated with total radical cystectomy; however, there is a high chance of recurrence. Nevertheless, markers for predicting this recurrence are not currently available. Here, we evaluated the chronological change of ephrin type-A receptor 2 (EPHA2) expression, a molecule known for its role in cell adhesion, to predict ...

The mechanical performance of a printed object in 3D concrete printing is influenced by the interfacial bonding strength between the deposited filaments. Hence, the physical properties of the layer interface and the influential factors have been studied. This study aims to clarify the mechanism of aggregate distribution heterogeneity as well as the influence of printing material extrusion speed on the heterogeneity inside the filament. A laboratory-scale material extruder is developed and used in ...
