The phototriggered ring-opening polymerisation of l-lactide is demonstrated for the first time using a photocaged tetramethylguanidine. The catalytic activity of the free guanidine was also investigated, showing it to be active for the polymerisation of δ-valerolactone and ε-caprolactone in the presence of a thiourea cocatalyst.

The superconducting transition temperature T c of films of aluminium fine particles deposited by gas evaporation method was determined by measuring dc electrical resistance. The observed values of T c were distributed from 1.5 to 2.5 K, about 5/4∼2 times of that of bulk metal, for the samples of average particle diameter 150∼50 A. The observed enhancement of T c was not explained by the surface softening of the particles only.

The dc electrical resistance of films of Ag and Al soot which consists of fine particles has been measured between 1.5 and 300 K. The specimens are prepared by the gas evaporation method. The resistance is constant in the low temperature region, while it increases with temperature above a certain point. By analyzing the temperature dependence of the resistance, the Debye temperature for fine particles \(\varTheta_{P}\) was estimated. It was about 1/2∼2/3 of that of bulk metal for Al of the particles ...

Abstract A study has been made of the relaxation phenomena in a series of poly-γ-n-alkyl-D-glutamates having linear side chains of different lengths in the temperature range from −170 to 250°C. The solid-state films of poly-γ-n-alkyl-D-glutamate were cast from solutions in α-helix and random coil forming solvents. The technique of dynamic mechanical relaxation at various frequencies up to 110 Hz was used in the investigation. X-ray, IR, and density measurements were used as supplements to the mechanical ...

Abstract The viscoelastic crystalline relaxation process has been newly observed for solid films of poly-γ-methyl-D-glutamate. The temperature range of the crystalline absorption corresponds to the temperature range in which the lattice distance deviates from linear expansion. The viscoelastic crystalline relaxation process was decomposed into the a, mechanism (150 to 170°C) and the α2 mechanism (180 to 190°C) which appear principally for solid poly-γ-methyl-D-glutamate cast from solutions in dichloroethane ...

Abstract MSn(OH) 6 (M = Mg, Co, Zn, Mn, Cd, Ca, Sr, and Ba) and their solid solutions were synthesized by coprecipitation from aqueous solutions of Na 2 Sn(OH) 6 complex and MCl 2 . MSnO 3 and their solid solutions were prepared by thermal decomposition of these MSn(OH) 6 precipitates. Coprecipitation procedures were established, and structures of MSn(OH) 6 and MSnO 3 were discussed in relation to mean radius of M 2+ ions. The morphology of particles of these hydroxides and oxides were also observed. ...

From the mortality statistics on malignant lymphomas in Japan and nationwide studies on T- and B-cell malignancies, the number of deaths from adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) in adults older than 20 years in the Kyushu district was estimated at 339 or more per year in 1978-82. The incidence for ATL per 100,000 was estimated at 3.5 for adults and 5.7 for persons over 40 years of age in the Kyushu district. From the information from a nationwide study on the distribution of ATL virus (ATLV) carriers ...

To investigate the relationship between the tumor growth rate of the primary breast cancer and its prognosis, records for 122 breast cancer patients in 9 hospitals in Japan were retrospectively reviewed. These records contained at least two measurements of the same tumor mass in the breast. So the growth rate was estimated from these measurements taken at different points in time. The doubling time of the breast tumors showed an approximately log‐normal distribution. The geometric mean of doubling ...

Recent time trends (1979-1987) and geographical distributions in mortalities from subsites of cancers of the hepato-biliary-pancreatic system have been investigated on the basis of the vital statistics of Japan. The corrected age-adjusted mortality rates (CAAMRs) were calculated to eliminate the influence of the proportion of subsite-unknown cancers. During the above period, the CAAMR for intrahepatic bile duct cancer increased by a relatively high extent (2.0-fold in males and 1.67-fold in females), ...

To establish the criteria for assessing the life‐prolonging effect of mass screening for breast cancer, clinical stage and prognosis of breast cancer detected by mass screening in 11 regions of Japan were compared with those for matched patients in out‐patient clinics. A total of 728 patients detected by mass screening and 1,450 found in the out‐patient clinics were reviewed. Abstract Background Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) productively infects only humans and chimpanzees but not cynomolgus or rhesus monkeys while simian immunodeficiency virus isolated from macaque (SIVmac) readily establishes infection in those monkeys. Several HIV-1 and SIVmac chimeric viruses have been constructed in order to develop an animal model for HIV-1 infection. Construction of an HIV-1 derivative which contains sequences of a SIVmac239 loop between α-helices 4 and 5 (L4/5) of ...
