Purpose To determine the location and variability of the anterolateral ligament (ALL) femoral origin. Methods The ALL was dissected and examined in 52 embalmed specimens, and the femoral origin was isolated. The presence of a bony or soft-tissue attachment, the relation to the lateral collateral ligament, the average diameter of the proximal origin, and the specific location of the origin relative to the lateral femoral epicondyle were recorded. Results The ALL was present in all 52 specimens, with a mean ...

Recent investigations into the structure and function of the anterolateral ligament (ALL) have resulted in renewed interest in the role of the lateral extra-articular structures in rotational control of the knee. With increased focus on the ALL, debate about the anatomic characteristics, the functional role in knee stability, and even the existence of this lateral structure has ensued. This article describes our dissection method for the ALL. Through careful dissection and precise elevation of the ...

Background: The anterolateral ligament (ALL) has been shown to have an important role in rotatory stability of the knee. While there is abundant research on sex-based differences related to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, there is a paucity of literature related to such differences in the ALL. Purpose: To define any sex-based differences in the ALL with regard to length, width, and thickness. Study Design: Descriptive laboratory study. Methods: The ALL was initially evaluated in 165 unpaired ...

Recent advancements in orthopaedic devices have instilled a renewed interest in repair of the anterior cruciate ligament. Biological augmentation of the repair has also recently been investigated with the hopes of improving repair outcomes and improving biological healing. The advent of needle arthroscopy allows for potentially decreased recovery times and potentially reduced complication rates compared with traditional arthroscopy. The purpose of this article is to present a percutaneous technique ...

Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) is a new analytical technique applied to problems in food and flavor analyses. Rapidity of analysis, a high discrimination against chemical noise, and the ability to analyze mixtures for functional groups are attributes of MS/MS that make it attractive for such problems. Sample collection and pretreatment differ from methods used in GC/MS. Correct choice of an ionization method is paramount. Daughter ion MS/MS spectra are used for compound identification via comparison ...

Abstract The positive ion fast atom bombardment mass spectra of isobaric/isomeric aryl phosphonium salts typically contain abundant intact cations, which can be used to establish the cationic molecular weight, characteristic ions that can be used to delineate structural subgroups, and fragment ions corresponding to losses of small neutral molecules. Several of the fragmentation pathways were elucidated by parent ion and daughter ion tandem mass spectrometry experiments. Dependence of the fragmentation ...

Prostate cancer is detected with increasing frequency but has a highly variable natural history and prognosis and active surveillance of men with low-risk prostate cancer would benefit greatly from minimally invasive methods to identify progression. Nonbranded/unauthorized vendors had been manufacturing/selling what they described as bosutinib, while the material supplied was actually an isomer of bosutinib. This raised concerns within the worldwide research community around the established control strategies for bosutinib. This manuscript summarizes that the appropriate testing was in place to ensure product quality, along with additional experimentation that was performed to confirm that testing (methods) can differentiate the potential isomeric ...

Abstract The proton T 1 was measured at 132 μT in ex vivo prostate tissue specimens from radical prostatectomies of 35 patients with prostate cancer. Each patient provided two specimens. The NMR and MRI measurements involved proton repolarization, a field of typically 150 mT and detection of the 5.6‐kHz signal with a superconducting quantum interference device. Values of T 1 varied from 41 to 86 ms. Subsequently, the percentages of tissue types were determined histologically. The theoretical image ...

Fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectrometry involves the dissolution of the sample in a liquid matrix, and the bombardment of the sample surface with energetic primary particles. A small fraction of the sample is sputtered as secondary ions, and another fraction is damaged by the irradiation. Since FAB experiments persist for extended periods, during the analysis the sample will have ample time to react with the matrix itself, with matrix impurities, and with reactive species formed during irradiation. ...

The global burden and distribution of melioidosis is poorly understood, including in the Caribbean. B. pseudomallei was previously isolated from humans and soil in eastern Puerto Rico but the abundance and distribution of B. pseudomallei in Puerto Rico as a whole has not been thoroughly investigated. Priming and activation of CD8+ T cell responses is crucial to achieve anti-viral and anti-tumor immunity. Live attenuated measles vaccine strains have been used successfully for immunization for decades and are currently investigated in trials of oncolytic virotherapy. The available reverse genetics systems allow for insertion of additional genes, including heterologous antigens. Here, we designed recombinant measles vaccine vectors for priming and activation of antigen-specific CD8+ T cells. For ...

Blood storage promotes the rapid depletion of red blood cell (RBC) high-energy adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (DPG), which are critical regulators of erythrocyte physiology and function, as well as oxygen kinetics and posttransfusion survival. Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) promotes fluxes through glycolysis. We hypothesized that S1P supplementation to stored RBC units would improve energy metabolism and posttransfusion recovery. We quantified S1P in 1929 samples (n = 643, storage ...

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) caused large epidemics throughout the Caribbean in 2014. We conducted nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) for CHIKV RNA (n = 29,695) and serologic testing for IgG against CHIKV (n = 1,232) in archived blood donor samples collected during and after an epidemic in Puerto Rico in 2014. NAAT yields peaked in October with 2.1% of donations positive for CHIKV RNA. A total of 14% of NAAT-reactive donations posed a high risk for virus transmission by transfusion because of high virus ...

We present measurements of the radial gravitational acceleration around isolated galaxies, comparing the expected gravitational acceleration given the baryonic matter with the observed gravitational acceleration, using weak lensing measurements from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey. We compare our RAR measurements to the predictions ...

Abstract Studies of stream macroinvertebrates traditionally use sampling methods that target benthic habitats. These methods could underestimate biodiversity if important assemblage components exist outside of the benthic zone. To test the efficacy of different sampling methods, we collected paired reach‐wide benthic and edge samples from up to 10 study reaches in nine basins spanning an aridity gradient across the United States. Edge sampling targeted riparian‐adjacent microhabitats not typically ...

Natural variability in habitat characteristics, including their interactions, can affect marine invertebrate development. Controlled laboratory experiments seek to assess responses to such variability. For marine invertebrates, responses to temperature are typically assessed but a continuous gradient of all temperatures that a species may encounter is not frequently used. For planktonic larvae of marine invertebrates, biotic factors such as food availability receive less attention due to difficulty ...
