The production and germination of primary conidia ofNeozygites floridanaas affected by temperature, humidity, and photoperiod was studied in the laboratory. All tested factors significantly affected the two processes studied. Production increased with increasing temperature between 13 and 23°C, with means of 35.5 and 55.4 conidia, respectively, discharged from each mummified mite cadaver. No conidia were produced at 28 or 33°C. Conidial production dropped significantly from 96.1/mummy in a moisture- ...

Nestedness among species assemblages implies that sites of lower species richness are subsets of richer sites in a regional species pool. This nestedness is a reflection of a non-random process of species loss as a consequence of factors that promote the disaggregation of assemblages. The impoverishment of assemblage diversity is more often observed in fragmented landscapes. This non-random process has important implications for conservation. We recorded 95 species of anurans across 22 protected ...

Previous studies have suggested that COVID-19 pneumonia is associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). This study aimed to investigate the incidence of VTE among mechanically ventilated adults with COVID-19 pneumonia, compared to patients with respiratory failure related to other causes. Prospective study that enrolled critically ill adults with suspected COVID-19 pneumonia between June 2, 2020 and August 11, 2020. Critically ill adults with suspected COVID-19 pneumonia who ...

Hybrid renewable systems increase electricity production by reducing the randomness of sources without greenhouse gas emissions. Literature indicates that further research is still required for large systems connected to the grid. The energy storage capability of hydroelectric plants provides an opportunity to develop new renewable energy generation. This work presents the results of a hybrid preliminary design between an existing hydropower plant (HPP) in Brazil, Santa Branca, and a simulated floating ...

Skeletal muscle disuse results in myofibrillar atrophy and protein degradation, via inflammatory and oxidative stress-mediated NF-kB signaling pathway activation. Nutritional interventions, such as l-glutamine (GLN) supplementation have shown antioxidant properties and cytoprotective effects through the modulation on the 70-kDa heat shock protein (HSP70) expression. However, these GLN-mediated effects on cell signaling pathways and biochemical mechanisms that control the myofibrillar protein content ...

This study assessed the genetic variability in open-pollinated progenies of Eucalyptus urophylla for resistance to rust (Puccinia psidii). The progeny trial was conducted on a statistical randomized block design with 20 progenies, five plants per plot, and nine replications. Analysis of variance showed high genetic variability for the studied trait, with potential for selection gains. The genetic variability of this population provides support to conduct a breeding program with superior individuals ...

The phytoalexin Resveratrol (3,5,4′-trihydroxystilbene; RSV) has been related to numerous beneficial effects on health by its cytoprotection and chemoprevention activities. Liver fibrosis is characterized by the extracellular matrix accumulation after hepatic injury and can lead to cirrhosis. In Brazil, envenomation by Bothrops pitvipers is responsible for over 73% of snakebites, and their venom is a rich source of proteolytic enzymes. Most studies have demonstrated that Bothrops jararaca venom acts on macromolecular substrates, causing an imbalance in the victim's hemostatic system. In contrast, fewer studies have examined the proteolytic activity on small molecules such as peptides. In this study, we used a set of bioactive peptides (insulin B chain, Met-enkephalin, Leu-enkephalin, ...

Abstract Caveolin‐1 (Cav‐1) expression is increased in hepatic stellate cells (HSC) upon liver cirrhosis and it functions as an integral membrane protein of lipid rafts and caveolae that regulates and integrates multiple signals as a platform. This study aimed to evaluate the role of Cav‐1 in HSC. Thus, the effects of exogenous expression of Cav‐1 in GRX cells, a model of activated HSC, were determined. Here, we demonstrated through evaluating well‐known HSC activation markers – such as α‐smooth muscle ...

Lys63-linked polyubiquitin (poly-Ub) chains appear to play a nondegradative signaling and/or recruitment role in a variety of key eukaryotic cellular processes, including NF-κB signal transduction and DNA repair. A protein heterodimer composed of a catalytically active ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme (Ubc13) and its homologue (Mms2 or Uev1a) forms a catalytic scaffold upon which a noncovalently associated acceptor Ub and thiolester-linked donor Ub are oriented such that Lys63-linked poly-Ub chain synthesis ...

For improving the lifetime of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), it is essential to understand the chemical reaction pathways involved in the degradation process of these devices. Using the laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LDI-TOF-MS) technique, an OLED based on the phosphorescent emitter tris(phenylpyridine)iridium (Ir(ppy)3) was investigated. We show that the chemical dissociation reaction of the Ir(ppy)3 molecule and an additional complexation of its fragments with ...

Ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme variants share significant sequence similarity with typical E2 (ubiquitin-conjugating) enzymes of the protein ubiquitination pathway but lack their characteristic active site cysteine residue. The MMS2 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae encodes one such ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme variant that is involved in the error-free DNA postreplicative repair pathway through its association with Ubc13, an E2. The Mms2-Ubc13 heterodimer is capable of linking ubiquitin molecules to ...
