Abstract Maize (Zea mays L.) embryos, isolated from the developing seed and incubated in dilute buffer, show reduced triacylglycerol (TAG) synthesis, and accumulation stops after 24 h. Synthesis and accumulation can be maintained at high levels if the incubation medium contains abscisic acid (ABA) and/or a high osmotic concentration. Radiolabeled free fatty acids accumulate at higher levels in embryos that contain less TAG, and acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase activity remains essentially unchanged under ...

Sublethal exposures to environmental pollutants may cause changes in physiological parameters. Thus, knowledge of basal physiological rates of the species and the development of methods to quantify these rates are extremely important. Considering the scarcity of cardiac and muscle physiological studies in native Amazonian fish species and that no evaluation of electrophysiological responses by exposure to a stressor has been reported in Bryconops caudomaculatus, the aim of this study was to develop ...

Chronic stress has been associated with detrimental or maladaptive neuroendocrine and immunological changes. We assessed the neuroendocrine and immunological correlates of a realistic chronic stress experienced by strictly healthy caregivers of Alzheimer's disease patients and age-matched controls. We screened 330 caregivers and 206 non-caregivers according to the 'strictly healthy' conditions established by the SENIEUR protocol. The MIC of isoniazid, peroxidase-catalase expression, and the presence of the katG gene for 102 Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates from patients in Sβo Paulo were compared. Fifty-three isoniazid-resistant and 49 isoniazid-sensitive isolates were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of katG sequences. All isoniazid-sensitive and 43 (81 %) isoniazid-resistant isolates expressed catalase (P = .001). None of isoniazid-sensitive and 4 (7%) of 53 isoniazid-resistant isolates lacked katG ...

Abstract The Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) was established by the Conference of Parties in 2002 to decrease the loss of plant diversity, reduce poverty and contribute to sustainable development. To achieve this overarching goal, the GSPC has established a series of targets, one of which is to ensure that plant diversity is well understood, so that it can be effectively conserved and used in a sustainable manner. Brazil hosts more than 46,000 species of plants, algae and fungi, representing ...

Background Early life stress has been suggested to mediate vulnerability to affective disorders. Animal models of repeated maternal separation have shown reduced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in specific brain regions implicated with hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and memory formation. In addition, BDNF levels are also reduced in major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder. The aim of this study was to investigate whether childhood physical neglect (CPN) and plasma BDNF ...

Heart failure (HF) is a progressively debilitating disease that considerably decreases the life expectancy and quality of life. It has become an important area of focus since it remains one of the most common reasons for admission in patients over the age of 65. Importantly, the incidence of HF has not declined within the past 20 years, but the survival after onset has increased in younger patients and men. This has been in part due to the growing interest in therapies that may decrease morbidity, ...

Several studies have suggested eugenol as a suitable anaesthetic for fish. However, it has also been regarded as a toxic and aversive substance to several aquatic organisms, including fish. Cardiac physiological studies in oysters are scarce and these kinds of responses can be key issues for understanding behavioral and baseline adaptive responses. In this study we characterized the electrocardiogram (ECG) tracing patterns, wave intervals (RR; QT), and complex duration (QRS) of Crassostrea gasar during immersion followed by air exposure, simulating what occurs in a tide cycle. Initially, the ECG was analyzed in the oysters under immersion for 30 min to evaluate the basal recordings (immersion ...
