Excess of heavy metals in agricultural soils is a matter of concern since it may decrease economic yield as a result of toxicity and lower product quality as a result of metal accumulation in edible plant parts. Among plant species and among cultivars within species a natural variation in uptake, translocation and distribution of trace elements occur. The transference of Cd and Zn, from soil to two lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivars grown in greenhouse, was evaluated in separate experiments for ...

Abstract Abstract Iron (Fe) deficiency in plants may be caused by heavy metal toxicity and is expressed mainly by chlorosis in young leaves. Zinc (Zn) is often the heavy metal involved. The growth of soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) in a 40 μM Zn nutrient solution was studied using a factorial 2x2x2 experiment; two Fe (20 and 100 μM), two S (0.02 and 20 mM), and two Fe foliar fertilization (with and without Fe‐DTPA) levels. Lower dry matter yield, chlorosis in young leaves, and change in the periodic movement ( ...

Abstract Plants from the Brazilian corn (Zea mays L.) cultivars CMS 54 and BR 473 were grown in nutrient solutions with 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mg cadmium (Cd) L‐1 for a ten day period. The experiment was a completely randomized block design with the treatments arranged in a 2×5×3 factorial, two corn cultivars, five Cd rates, and three replications. The influence of the Cd rates on the nutritional status of the corn plants was studied. Samples from roots and shoots were analyzed for their Cd, ...

Abstract A typical symptom of iron (Fe) deficiency in plants is yellowing or chlorosis of leaves. Heavy metal toxicity, including that of zinc (Zn), is often also expressed by chlorosis and may be called Fe chlorosis. Iron deficiency and Zn toxicity were evaluated in soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) at two levels each of Zn (0.8 and 40 μM), Fe (0 and 20 μM), and sulfur (S) (0.02 and 20 mM). Reduction in dry matter yield and leaf chlorosis were observed in plants grown under the high level of Zn (toxic level), ...

Abstract Application of most waste or by‐product material increases the zinc (Zn) concentration in soils markedly. This investigation was conducted to determine if enhanced sulfur (S) supplied as sulfate (SO4) would modify the toxic effects of excess Zn. Soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merf. cv. Rarisorri) was grown for two weeks in nutrient solutions containing ranges in Zn (0.8 to 80 μM) and S (0.02 to 20 mM). Root and shoot conditions were observed, dry weights measured, and Zri concentration determined. ...

Cadmium (Cd2+ ) is highly harmful to plant growth. Although Cd2+ induces programmed cell death (PCD) in plant cells, Cd2+ stress in whole plants during later developmental stages and the mechanism underlying Cd2+ -mediated toxicity are poorly understood. Here, we showed that Cd2+ limits plant growth, causes intense redness in leaf vein, leaf yellowing, and chlorosis during the R1 reproductive stage of soybean (Glycine max). These symptoms were associated with Cd2+ -induced PCD, as Cd2+ -stressed soybean ...

Two experiments were carried out in a greenhouse during two seasons. In the first experiment, two common bean cultivars received six ZnF rates (0, 120, 240, 480, 720, or 1,200 g ha-1), with split applications at the R5, R7, and R8, or R7 and R8, or R8 plant stages.
