We report on the fractal analysis of digital speckle patterns experimentally generated using an optical setup to record the light scattered from metallic rough surfaces in the normal direction. Using the differential box counting technique, we have calculated the fractal dimension of digital speckle patterns for six samples with different roughness. We report on the experimental investigation of speckle pattern formation from rough metallic surfaces at diffraction plane. It is found that the ratio between bright and dark regions of the binarized speckle patterns exponentially increases when the surface roughness increases. We also propose an alternative technique for measuring surface roughness.

The laser ablation technique has been employed to prepare titanium (Ti) and tungsten (W) colloids from the elemental solids in ethanol using a copper-hydrogen bromide (CuHBr) vapour laser. We introduce a simple model for a set of interacting idealized neurons. The model presents a self-organized state in which avalanches of all sizes are observed and activity is detected in the whole extension of the simulated system without a typical length scale. The basic elements of the model are endowed with the main features of a neuron function. On this basis it is speculated that the collective system that they form, i.e., the brain, could display self-organized criticality in some situations.

In this work, we report on the analysis of speckle patterns produced by illuminating different rough surfaces with an optical vortex, a first-order (l=1) Laguerre-Gaussian beam. The generated speckle patterns were observed in the normal direction exploring four different planes: the diffraction plane, image plane, focal plane, and exact Fourier transform plane. We report on the application of Hurst exponent analysis to digital speckle patterns for investigating moving rough surfaces in the presence of defects. Digital speckle patterns were generated by recording the scattered light from moving surfaces illuminated by a laser beam. It was found that it is possible to identify the presence of the defects by means of the variation of the Hurst exponent along the sample.
