Background While microRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in tissue differentiation and in maintaining basal physiology, little is known about the miRNA expression levels in stomach tissue. Alterations in the miRNA profile can lead to cell deregulation, which can induce neoplasia. Methodology/Principal Findings A small RNA library of stomach tissue was sequenced using high-throughput SOLiD sequencing technology. We obtained 261,274 quality reads with perfect matches to the human miRnome, and 42% of ...

In this paper, an unsupervised artificial neural network was implemented to identify the patters of specific signatures. The network was based on the differential expression of miRNAs (under or over expression) found in healthy or cancerous gastric tissues. Among the tissues analyzes, the neural network evaluated 514 miRNAs of gastric tissue that exhibited significant differential expression. The result suggested a specific expression signature nine miRNAs (hsa-mir-21, hsa-mir-29a, hsa-mir-29c, hsa- ...

In breast cancer diagnosis, mammography (MMG), ultrasonography (USG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are the imaging methods most used. There is a scarcity of comparative studies that evaluate the accuracy of these methods in the diagnosis of breast cancer.A cross-sectional study was carried out through the review of electronic medical records of 32 female patients who underwent breast imaging examinations at a imaging diagnostic center in Teresina, State of Piauí, Brazil. Patients who had these ...

Macaúba is a tropical palm native in South and Central America, and its fruits present a high-quality oil for biodiesel production. Notwithstanding, macaúba's wastes and by-products are not usually repurposed as energy sources. This study shows a bibliometric analysis to assess macaúba's current applications and to investigate other energy recovery routes for its by-products. All the investigations focused on information about the main research fields related to macaúba. The study showed that only ...

Macaúba husks are inedible lignocellulosic wastes obtained after extracting oil from the fruit for biodiesel production. The objective of this study was to valorize macaúba husks through subcritical water hydrolysis (SWH) pretreatment followed by anaerobic digestion (PT+AD) in comparison to a control reactor (CR). The semi-continuous parameters were: 10 g of dried husk; flow rate of 10 mL/min at 200 °C and 14 MPa and for a total reaction time of 40 min. For AD, mesophilic conditions (35 °C) were kept ...

We provide pathological, immunohistochemical and molecular evidence of cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) infection in a live-stranded adult female killer whale (Orcinus orca), which stranded alive in Espírito Santo State, Brazil, in 2014. Although attempts were made to release the animal, it stranded again and died. The main pathological findings were severe pulmonary oedema, pleural petechiation, multifocal, lymphoplasmacytic meningoencephalitis and leptomeningomyelitis with perivascular cuffing and ...

The Amazon Basin is undergoing extensive environmental degradation as a result of deforestation and the rising occurrence of fires. The degradation caused by fires is exacerbated by the occurrence of anomalously dry periods in the Amazon Basin. The objectives of this study were: (i) to quantify the extent of areas that burned between 2001 and 2019 and relate them to extreme drought events in a 20-year time series; (ii) to identify the proportion of countries comprising the Amazon Basin in which environmental ...

This paper aims to present and run a composite model using Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm (PSO), with the assistance of parallel computing methods, to optimize the electrical distribution in a power grid based on an IEEE 14-bus system. The mathematical-computational modeling allows using the objective function to analyze the cost in relation to power or voltage as independent variables, and it is the bridge for the connection between the 2 implemented algorithms. The results presented in ...

This article portrays the relationship between fractional order differential calculus and the computational intelligence method, applying it to the improvement of intelligent systems. The Kirchhoff Laws, represented by second order differential equations, were solved via non-integer order differential calculus. The results obtained were used in the implementation of decision trees, which allowed the decision rules to be incorporated into the controllers. The results obtained by mathematical modeling ...

Cisplatin (CP) is an antineoplastic widely used in the treatment of various solid tumors, however, its clinical application is limited by nephrotoxicity. Here, we compared the impact of preconditioning with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) with continuous training of low (LIT) and moderate (MIT) intensity on innate immunity markers in female rats with CP-induced acute kidney injury. The rats were divided into five groups (n = 7): saline control and sedentary (C + S); CP and sedentary (CP + S); CP and ...

Adnexal torsion is characterized by partial or complete rotation of the suspensory ligament of the ovary and its corresponding vascular pedicle, resulting in vascular impairment that can culminate in hemorrhagic infarction, as well as necrosis of the ovary and fallopian tube. Because there are myriad causes of acute pelvic pain, the differential diagnosis of ovarian torsion is often challenging. Consequently, radiologists should be familiar with the main imaging findings. In this regard, there are ...
