da Vinci Leonardo, Luke Syson, Larry Keith,
Leonardo da Vinci's reputation as an inventor and scientist, and the complexity of his creativity and personality, have sometimes almost overshadowed the importance of his aims and techniques as a painter. This catalogue focuses on a crucial period in the 1480s and 1490s when, as a salaried court artist to Duke Ludovico Sforza in the city-state of Milan, freed from the pressures of making a living in the commercially minded Florentine republic, Leonardo produced some of the most celebrated-and influential- ...

The effect of electrolyte type upon the resilience of lithium-ion cells to high-temperature storage has been investigated in experimental mesocarbon microbead carbon- three-electrode cells. Specifically, electrolytes have been studied where the solvent mixtures have been varied, with the intention of determining the impact of ethylene carbonate (EC) content upon performance. In addition to determining the reversible and irreversible capacity losses sustained as a result of high-temperature storage , ...

Several examples are constructed of connected Lie groups with completely reducible regular representation. An example is given in each of the following classes: (i) solvable, (ii) amenable, nonsolvable, (iii) nonamenable and (iv) non-Type I. It is also shown by example that G having a completely reducible regular representation does not imply that A ( G ) = B 0 ( G ) A(G) = {B_0}(G) while the reverse implication is known for separable groups (see [ 2 ] and [ 6 ]).

The “Mackey machine” is heavily employed to prove the following theorem. Let G be a separable locally compact group. Suppose that every positive definite function p on G which vanishes at infinity is associated with the regular representation R, i.e., p(g) = (Rgϑ, ϑ) for some L2 function ϑ. Then R decomposes into a direct sum of irreducible representations. This generalizes the theorem of Figà-Talamanca for unimodular groups. Although we use his result several times, our techniques are basically very ...

A comparison of the inter- and intramolecular diyl trapping routes to linearly fused tricyclopentanoids is presented. In addition, several of the factors which are responsible for the stereoselectivity which is associated with the intramolecular process are examined and it is concluded that conformational rather than electronic (secondary orbital) factors play the dominant role. It is shown that gem methyl groups located on the acyclic chain which joins the diyl and diylophile (in reference to 32 ...

A high resolution, 3-D seismic base survey was conducted at Amoco’s Gregoire Lake In‐Situ Steam Pilot (GLISP) located in northeastern Alberta, Canada, approximately 40 km south of Fort McMurray. Other partners in the project are AOSTRA (Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority) and Petro Canada. The prime purpose for acquiring the base survey was to use this information as a basis of comparison with future surveys of a similar type in order to locate and monitor the progress of in‐situ ...

The first spectral numerical simulations of 16 orbits, merger, and ringdown of an equal-mass nonspinning binary black hole system are presented. Gravitational waveforms from these simulations have accumulated numerical phase errors through ringdown of $\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.1\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{radian}$ when measured from the beginning of the simulation, and $\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.02\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{radian}$ when waveforms are time and phase shifted to agree at the peak amplitude. ObjectiveAlthough anoxia/reoxygenation of cultured cells has been used to model lung ischemia–reperfusion injury, this does not accurately mimic events experienced by lung cells while a lung is retrieved from a donor, stored, and transplanted. We developed an in vitro model of nonhypoxic ischemia–reperfusion injury to simulate these events.MethodsHuman umbilical vein endothelial cells underwent simulated cold ischemia by replacing 37°C culture media with 4°C Perfadex (Vitrolife, Kungsbacka, Sweden) ...

Sensitivity analysis, which estimates the probability that a program location can hide a failure-causing fault, is addressed. The concept of sensitivity is discussed, and a fault/failure model that accounts for fault location is presented. Sensitivity analysis requires that every location be analyzed for three properties: the probability of execution occurring, the probability of infection occurring, and the probability of propagation occurring. One type of analysis is required to handle each part ...

The low temperature charge and discharge characteristics of experimental MCMB-Li/sub x/Ni/sub y/Co/sub 1-y/O/sub 2/ cells containing different electrolytes were investigated. The use of low ethylene carbonate (EC)-content electrolyte formulations has resulted in good discharge performance to temperatures as low as -40/spl deg/C. The effect of charge voltage and charge current upon the individual electrode potentials at low temperature was investigated using the three electrode cells (containing lithium ...
