SummaryIn Section 10.4 we saw that the strength of a differential operator with constant coefficients in ℝ n is determined by the principal part p if and only if p=0 implies dp≠0 in ℝ n \0. Such operators were said to be of principal type. The purpose of this chapter is to study general operators P∈Ψ phg m (X) on a manifold X assuming that the condition dp ≠0 when p =0 is valid in a suitably strengthened form which makes the properties of p independent of lower order terms.

We extend the results of a work by L. Hörmander [9] concerning the resolution of the characteristic Cauchy problem for second order wave equations with regular first order potentials. The geometrical background of this work was a spatially compact spacetime with smooth metric. The initial data surface was spacelike or null at each point and merely Lipschitz. We lower the regularity hypotheses on the metric and potential and obtain similar results. The Cauchy problem for a spacelike initial data surface ...

Let Ω be a complex analytic manifold of dimension n with a hermitian metric and C ∞ boundary, and let □=∂ ¯∂ ¯ * +∂ ¯ * ∂ ¯ be the self-adjoint ∂ ¯-Neumann operator on the space L 0,q 2 (Ω) of forms of type (0,q). If the Levi form of ∂Ω has everywhere at least n-q positive or at least q+1 negative eigenvalues, it is well known that Ker □ has finite dimension and that the range of □ is the orthogonal complement. In this paper it is proved that dim Ker □=∞ if the range of □ is closed and the Levi form of ∂Ω has signature n-q-1,q at some boundary ...

This paper is one of a series devoted to the Cauchy problem for an equation of the form (1.1) $$ \square u = G(u,u',u'') $$ with small Cauchy data (1.2) $$ u = \varepsilon {u_0},\quad {\partial_t}u = \varepsilon {u_1},\quad {\text{when}}\,{\text{t = 0}} $$ Here □ = 2 − Δ is the wave operator in R 1+n, with variables denoted by t = x 0 and x = (x1,..., x n ), G is a C ∞ function vanishing of second order at the origin, u′ and u″ denote all first and second order derivates of u, and u j ∈ C 0 ∞ . General results have been obtained with simple proofs ...
