Early prediction of long-term mortality in status epilepticus is important given the high fatality rate in the years after diagnosis. To improve prognostication of long-term mortality after status epilepticus diagnosis. This retrospective, multicenter, multinational cohort study analyzed adult patients who were diagnosed with and treated for status epilepticus at university hospitals in Odense, Denmark, between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2017, as well as in Oslo, Norway; Marburg, Germany; and ...

In patients with status epilepticus (SE), the clinical significance of ictal changes on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is insufficiently understood. We here studied whether the presence of ictal MRI changes was associated with neurological deterioration at discharge. The retrospective cohort comprised all identifiable patients treated at Odense University Hospital in the period 2008-2017. All amenable MRIs were systemically screened for ictal changes. Patient demographics, electroencephalography, ...

The organotrophic functions of the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) have been the subject of several studies. In the more recent studies, this function has been reported in the brain. In the present study, we have measured the levels of HGF in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and sera from 78 patients divided into 6 different groups according to central nervous system (CNS) infection and control. Quantitative measurements of HGF in the CSF and serum were performed by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Elevated ...

To investigate differences in long-term survival and short-term neurological deficits in adult patients fulfilling either sub-criterion of the Salzburg Consensus Criteria (SC) for non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE).We retrospectively identified a cohort of patients with first-time NCSE epilepticus at Odense University Hospital from 2014 to 2017. Results of electroencephalograms at admission were dichotomized according to the SC (more than 25 epileptiform discharges/10 s was defined as the fast ...

In the present study, we aimed to compare the thermoregulatory response and soccer-specific training performance aspects of two commercially available sport drinks, both of similar carbohydrate concentration, but one containing 5.2% glycerol. Ten players participated in two similar outdoor training sessions and were randomly assigned to each of two drinks: a carbohydrate (C) beverage or a carbohydrate-glycerol (CG) beverage. Players consumed 500 mL of C or CG 30 minutes pre-exercise and at half-time. ...

The causes for peripheral facial palsy remain obscure in many patients. Evidence exists suggesting viruses, especially those belonging to the herpesvirus group, may be causative. This study was developed to evaluate this theory. One hundred forty-seven patients with acute peripheral facial palsy of primarily unknown origin were studied. All were examined within 1 week of onset. Subsequent follow-up was undertaken until the palsy had recovered or become static. Paried cerebral spinal fluid and serum ...

CSF and serum were examined in acute and convalescence phase from 56 patients with acute idiopathic peripheral facial palsy. CSF protein analysis, viral and borrelia serology were performed. Borrelia infection was found in 9/56 cases and was often associated with inflammatory CSF findings. One patient each had serological evidence for a recent or ongoing infection with herpes simplex, varicella zoster, adeno, influenza B, echo and Epstein-Barr virus, but none had specific intrathecal antibody synthesis; ...

AbstractLittle is known about the long-term effects of Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) infection in untreated patients with peripheral facial palsy. We investigated 12 patients with elevated serum Bb antibody levels, with a median follow-up time of 11 years, during which 3 of the 12 still exhibited intrathecal antibody production of antibodies against Bb flagellar antigen, and 2 of the 3 had normal serum Bb antibodies. Four of the 12 had elevated serum antibody titres at the late follow-up examination. ...

Abstract Background Postictal encephalopathy is well known after status epilepticus (SE), but its prognostic impact and triggers are unknown. Here, we aimed to establish risk factors for the development of postictal encephalopathy and to study its impact on survival after discharge. Methods This retrospective cohort study comprised adult patients diagnosed with first nonanoxic SE at Odense University Hospital between January 2008 and December 2017. Patients with ongoing SE at discharge or unknown ...
