Abstract. The Organon Teknika Vironostika anti‐HTLV‐III/LAV test was evaluated in three Danish blood banks. The evaluation comprised in total 3,940 consecutive donors. In all three blood banks the tests were carried out exactly according to the manufacturer's instructions, using a low cut‐off value defined as (4N̄ + P̄)/5, where N̄ and P̄ are means of optical densities of known negative and positive samples. By this method the overall frequency of repeatably positive samples was 0.30%. ...

Pulmonary hypertension is an "umbrella term" used for a spectrum of entities resulting in an elevation of the pulmonary arterial pressure. Clinical symptoms include dyspnea and fatigue which in the absence of adequate therapeutic intervention may lead to progressive right heart failure and death. The pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension is characterized by three major processes including vasoconstriction, vascular remodeling and microthrombotic events. These GWAS used data from four ...

Abstract This study examined the effects of dual task requirements on age differences in free recall performance. One thousand adults ranging in age between 35 and 80 years performed a word recall task alone and concurrently with a card-sorting task (at encoding, retrieval, or both). Age differences in memory performance were substantial under single task conditions, but after correcting memory performance under dual task conditions for differences in single task performance, age did not predict ...

The model developed shall be used in future as the basis of 3D-reactor model for the simulation of large scale CFB combustors. The two-fluid model (TFM) approach is used to represent the fluid mechanics involved in the flow. The computational implementation is accomplished by the commercial software FLUENT. The concept of simulation-supported measurement is suggested for the elucidation of processes occurring in the combustion chambers of large-scale circulating fluidized bed combustors where the desired information cannot be obtained by direct measurements. The concept is illustrated with the example of secondary air injection where the way the air is released, the penetration depth and the evenness of air distribution over the cross-sectional area of the combustion chamber are of interest. The measured ...

Abstract The attachment of modulators to a trimeric porin ion channel was investigated (see picture of the trimer with a crown ether modulator (orange)). The interplay of modulator and protein is essential for the conformational heterogeneity of the hybrid channel. Single‐site attachment in large pores is not sufficient to change the electrophysiological characteristics of the pores—such change requires additional noncovalent interactions or second‐site attachments. magnified image

Abstract Capillary leak syndrome (CLS) represents a phenotype of increased fluid extravasation, resulting in intravascular hypovolemia, extravascular edema formation and ultimately hypoperfusion. While endothelial permeability is an evolutionary preserved physiological process needed to sustain life, excessive fluid leak—often caused by systemic inflammation—can have detrimental effects on patients’ outcomes. This article delves into the current understanding of CLS pathophysiology, diagnosis and ...

Abstract In recent years, functional imaging studies have revealed a supraspinal network, which is involved in perception and processing of bladder distention. Our aim was, therefore, to evaluate the outcome of bladder cold stimulation on supraspinal activity using functional magnetic ...
