오타꾸가 이 세상에 드러났을 때는 미야자키 쓰토무의 살인사건과 옴 진리교 사건 때문이었다. 따라서 그들을 바라보는 사회적 시각은 정신병리로 인식되었고 지금도 그 부정적인 시각으로 부터 완전히 자유롭지는 못하다.BR 사회적 변화에 따른 집단과 개인, 그 관계와 성향을 분석해 볼 때 오타꾸의 성적대상은 사람이기 보다는 상징적 매개물이다. 그들은 인형이나 애니메이션, 피규어에 애정을 쏟는다. 인형들을 사고파는 그들의 소비 행위는 키덜트 현상이란 유행으로 확산되고 있다. 이 논문은 근대 이성의 합리화에 대치되는 서브컬쳐인 오타꾸의 장인정신이나 예술 세계를 부정하려는 것이 아니라 아즈마 히로키가 주장한 ‘커다란 이야기’가 없는 이 시대에 고독한 폐쇄성을 가진 그들의 성과 가상, 관계성에 대해 이야기하고자 하였다. 사실 인간이 인간에 대한 기억은 정신이 아니라 살의 기억이다. 사물의 본질은 특정한 요소에 의한 것이 아니라 관계에 의해 결정된다란 의미에서 세상과 관계 맺기를 위한 제언에 의의를 두었다.
