The synthesis of effective heterogeneous catalysts is one of the main challenges toward hydrothermal processing of wood-derived biomass into marketable sustainable chemicals. Many of these catalysts are based on noble metals and are normally synthesized using multiple steps in time-consuming processes. Here, we have developed a one-pot catalyst synthesis method for Ni–CeO2–x supported on carbon nanofibers. In situ H2 production through formic acid decomposition enabled the synthesis of catalysts ...

Abstract Research in the field of third language acquisition has consistently identified two key factors which have an effect on the ways in which the two known languages may influence the acquisition of a third. These factors are language distance (typology) and language status (more specifically, second language, L2, or non-native language status). To date, however, the findings have not been conclusive regarding whether one of the two factors has a greater influence than the other. In this study, ...

The 70-gene profile is a new prognostic tool that has the potential to greatly improve risk assessment and treatment decision making for early breast cancer. Its prospective validation is currently ongoing through the MINDACT (Microarray in Node-Negative Disease May Avoid Chemotherapy) trial, a 6,000-patient randomized, multicentric trial. This article reviews the several steps in the development of the profile from its discovery to its clinical validation.

Abstract Lectin histochemistry is a useful method that allows the in situ identification of the terminal sugar moieties of the carbohydrates that form the glycoconjugates. Moreover, when it is combined with chemical or enzymatic deglycosylation pretreatments, lectin histochemistry can be employed to determine if carbohydrates are linked to the protein core by means of an N‐ or O‐glycosidic linkage or, indeed, to partially sequence the sugar chains. One of the most interesting model organs for the ...

Some functionalised dipeptides can form hydrogels when salts are added to solutions at high pH. We have used surface tension, conductivity, rheology, optical, confocal and scanning electron microscopy, (1)H NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements to characterise fully the phase behaviour of solutions of one specific gelator, 2NapFF, at 25 °C at pH 10.5. We show that this specific naphthalene-dipeptide undergoes structural transformations as the concentration is increased, initially forming spherical ...

Although the frontal lobes have traditionally been considered the neural substrates of executive functioning (EF), recent studies have suggested that other structures, such as the cerebellum, may be associated with these abilities. Argininemia is a rare hereditary disease due to a deficiency of hepatic arginase, which is the last enzyme of the urea cycle and hydrolyzes arginine to ornithine and urea. The onset of the disease is usually in childhood, and clinical manifestations include progressive spastic paraparesis and mental retardation. Liver involvement is less frequent and usually not as severe as observed in other UCDs. For this reason, and because usually there is a major neurological disease at diagnosis, patients ...

The European genetic landscape has been shaped by several human migrations occurred since Paleolithic times. The accumulation of archaeological records and the concordance of different lines of genetic evidence during the last two decades have triggered an interesting debate concerning the role of ancient settlers from the Franco-Cantabrian region in the postglacial resettlement of Europe. In healthy motor endplates, tetanic depression is overcome by tonic adenosine A(2A) -receptor-mediated facilitation of transmitter release. The A(2A) receptor operates a coordinated shift from fast-desensitizing Ca(v) 2.1 (P/Q) calcium influx to long-lasting Ca(V) 1 (L) channels on motor nerve terminals. This study aimed at investigating whether A(2A) receptors-operated Ca(2+) influx via Ca(V) 1 (L)-type channels contribute to sustain acetylcholine release evoked by 50 Hz-bursts in toxin-induced Myasthenia ...

Blood spots are collected at the time a blood sample is donated at a health centre and before processing the blood sample at the biobank. To test ...
